In Eastern philosophy, the thinker who spoke most deeply about nature is undoubtedly Laozi (老子).
Laozi was a philosopher of China’s Spring and Autumn period about 2,500 years ago, and his
thought is contained in a short yet profound book, the Dao De Jing (道德經).
The “nature” that Laozi speaks of is ziran (自然), literally “so-of-itself” or “what is so by itself” —
a state that has not been artificially forced, the original way things are.
In the Dao De Jing, there is a passage:
“Man follows the earth,
the earth follows heaven,
heaven follows the Dao,
and the Dao follows what is natural (ziran).”
This means that everything in the world exists by following the order of nature.
In our busy modern society, people live in constant competition.
But nature does not compete like that.
Trees do not fight with other trees.
Flowers do not compare themselves with other flowers.
They simply bloom in their own way.
Laozi’s philosophy of nature ultimately comes down to this:
Do not live by forcing things.
Do not go against the flow.
Reduce your desires.
Live like nature.
The human mind, living within the energy of nature, is also influenced by nature, whether
we are aware of it or not.
Then where is a person’s character formed?
Some people are upright like a tree, some are deep like the sea, and others are bright like the sun.
In Eastern Four Pillars (Myeongri) studies, when explaining human personality, the concept of the
Ten Heavenly Stems (十天干) is used.
Jia (甲), Yi (乙), Bing (丙), Ding (丁), Wu (戊), Ji (己), Geng (庚), Xin (辛), Ren (壬), and Gui (癸).
These ten energies are not just symbols; they represent the energies of nature.
They are the five natural energies—wood, fire, earth, metal, and water
appearing in different forms. That is what the Ten Heavenly Stems are.
Therefore, if you understand the Ten Heavenly Stems, you can understand human personality
in the same way you understand nature.
You begin to see people’s hearts as you would look at a forest, the sun, mountains, and the sea.
Now, let us look at each of the Ten Heavenly Stems, one by one, as metaphors in nature.
① Jia Wood (甲木) — A person like a great tree
Jia Wood is compared to a great tree.
A great tree grows straight and stretches upward toward the sky.
So people with strong Jia energy are often honest and have a strong sense of justice.
Once they believe a path is right, they do not bend easily.
At times, they may be called stubborn, but within that stubbornness is a desire to keep principles.
Jia-type people often take on leadership roles.
Just as a great tree becomes the center of the forest, they naturally come to lead others.
However, even a tree cannot grow alone.
It needs sunlight, water, and soil.
Thus, what is important for Jia people is harmony with those around them.
② Yi Wood (乙木) — A person like grass and flowers
Yi Wood is the energy of grass and flowers.
Unlike a great tree, grass sways in the wind,
but it does not break easily.
Therefore, people with strong Yi energy tend to be flexible and delicate in character.
They understand others’ emotions well and are good at reading the atmosphere.
Rather than pushing through with brute force, they often solve problems with wisdom and
gentleness.
Many people with rich artistic sense and sensitivity have strong Yi energy.
Yi Wood is like a small but beautiful flower that remains in people’s hearts for a long time.
③ Bing Fire (丙火) — A person like the sun
Bing Fire is the fire of the sun.
The sun is always bright and strong.
Thus, people with strong Bing energy are usually bright, active, and full of energy.
They have a natural ability to lead the mood around them
and enjoy being with others.
Their leadership is generally strong.
Just as the sun lights up the world, they give vitality to those around them.
But when the sun is too strong, people close their eyes.
So what Bing people need
is consideration and balance to go along with their passion.
④ Ding Fire (丁火) — A person like a candle flame
Ding Fire is compared to a candle or a lantern.
It is not as strong as the sun,
but on a dark night, a single small candle becomes a great light.
People with strong Ding energy are usually warm and affectionate.
They take good care of others
and make those around them feel at ease through small acts of consideration.
So Ding-type people often become the emotional center among friends or within the family.
Ding Fire is not a flame that lights up the whole world,
but a flame that lights up the human heart.
⑤ Wu Earth (戊土) — A person like a mountain
Wu Earth is the energy of a mountain.
A mountain silently holds its place.
Thus, people with strong Wu energy tend to have a strong sense of responsibility and a
solid character.
Whatever happens, they are not easily shaken.
They have the strength to quietly carry out the tasks they have taken on,
and they often become someone others can rely on in difficult times.
Just as a mountain supports the world, Wu-type people often become a central pillar for those
around them.
⑥ Ji Earth (己土) — A person like a field
Ji Earth is the soil of the fields.
Soil does not shine on its own,
yet it nurtures all life.
Therefore, people with strong Ji energy are often very tolerant and considerate.
They like to help others
and make people feel comfortable.
When you are with someone of Ji Earth,
you feel a sense of stability,
as if you were sitting on warm, soft ground.
⑦ Geng Metal (庚金) — A person like steel
Geng Metal is compared to steel.
It has a solid and sharp nature.
So people with strong Geng energy generally have great decisiveness and driving force.
When they see something wrong, they try to correct it,
and they are good at cutting away what is unnecessary.
At times they may seem cold,
but often there is a strong sense of justice inside.
Geng Metal is like a sword that shapes and refines the world.
⑧ Xin Metal (辛金) — A person like a jewel
Xin Metal is a jewel.
Unlike steel, it has a delicate nature and a beautiful radiance.
People with strong Xin energy usually possess refined taste and sensitivity.
They have a good eye for beauty and place great importance on elegance and quality.
Thus, they often shine in fields such as art, design, and beauty.
Xin Metal is not the power that grips a sword,
but the jewel that shines through its beauty.
⑨ Ren Water (壬水) — A person like the sea
Ren Water is the ocean—vast, deep, and without end.
People with strong Ren energy usually have a big scale and a free-spirited personality.
They look at the world with a wide perspective
and grow through diverse experiences.
They are often closely connected with travel, business, and international activities.
Just as the sea receives all rivers, Ren Water symbolizes tolerance and great currents.
⑩ Gui Water (癸水) — A person like rain
Gui Water is rain and dew.
It is not a great ocean,
but it is water that sustains the world.
Rain falls quietly, making flowers bloom and nurturing forests.
Thus, people with strong Gui energy tend to be deeply sensitive and emotionally delicate.
They understand others’ feelings well
and have the ability to offer quiet comfort.
Gui Water does not change the world with a loud voice,
but it quietly transforms people’s hearts.
Human beings are all part of nature
When we look at the Ten Heavenly Stems, we discover something interesting.
Some people are like trees, some are like the sun, and some are like the sea.
We are all born with different energies, yet we all live within the same nature.
So the best way to understand people
is to look at nature.
If you understand the forest, you can understand the trees.
If you understand the sea, you can know the depth of water.
And it is the same with people.
When we look at people through the energies of nature,
we can come to understand our different personalities a little more warmly.
Laozi saw the cause of human unhappiness in this way:
It is because we go against nature.
Because our greed grows, competition intensifies,
and we try to forcefully change the world.
That is why he emphasized a simple life.
“Those who know do not speak,
those who speak do not know.”
He also said:
“With little, one is content;
with much, one becomes confused.”
Laozi’s philosophy, in the end,
is a teaching to lessen our desires
and live in accordance with nature.
In a turbulent world,
let us try to become “natural people”
who live most truly as themselves.
