In just a few days it will be Ipchun, the day when spring takes its first step, and soon after, Seollal
—the Lunar New Year that we also call Gujeong—will arrive.
On New Year’s Day we say to one another, “Saehae bok mani badeuseyo (May you receive many
blessings in the new year).”
But what exactly is this “bok” (福) that we refer to in such a blessing?
Let’s look at the character itself, and then explore what “blessing” means for Koreans,
and in Buddhist scriptures and the Bible.
When we examine the Chinese character 福, each stroke is not just decoration; every part carries
meaning.
The basic structure of the character 福
The character 福 can largely be divided into three parts:
- Left: the radical 示 (“to show,” related to deities and ritual)
- Upper right: 一 口 (“one” + “mouth”)
- Lower right: 田 (“field”)
Structurally, it can be seen as:
Traditionally, the entire right side (畐) is regarded as a single root character,
which then combines with the left-side 示 (related to spirits/gods and sacrificial rites) to form the
full meaning.
The left side 示 – Appearing before the divine, a heart that petitions
The left component 示 (“to show”) was originally a pictograph of an altar or sacrificial table.
In ancient bronze inscriptions and oracle bone script, it depicts offerings laid out on an altar
and sacrifices being made upon it.
Thus, characters that include the 示 radical often have meanings related to gods, rituals,
supplication, destiny, or spirits(such as 祀, 祝, 神, 祈, 祭, etc.).
Within 福, 示 carries the sense of:
- “To ask and hope for something from Heaven or the gods,”
- “To seek help from a realm beyond human control.”
In other words, from the outset 福 can be understood as a character with the nuance of:
- “Good things that come from Heaven,”
- “A gracious state bestowed by the divine.”
The lower right 田 – Field, land, and the basis of livelihood
The lower right component 田 literally means “field” or “land.”
For people in ancient times, fields were the foundation of livelihood and wealth.
To have land meant:
- The power not to starve,
- The stability to feed one’s family,
- A base that could be passed on to descendants.
The fact that 田 is contained within 福 suggests that people regarded as central to “blessing”:
- “Having land on which to farm,”
- “Concrete material abundance sufficient for living,”
- “A solid foundation for one’s life.”
Material foundations are not excluded at all;
rather, they are honestly included as one pillar of what “blessing” is.
The upper right 一 + 口 – One allotted portion, a mouthful granted by Heaven
The upper right part of 福 can, in terms of strokes, be broken down into:
- 一 (“one”)
- 口 (“mouth”)
The human mouth, the capacity to eat
The character 口 basically relates to the mouth, to speech, and to eating.
The mouth symbolizes the functions of “eating and speaking,”
and is the channel through which a person receives and enjoys nourishment.
Within 福, 口 can be interpreted as symbolizing:
- “Food that goes into the mouth,”
- “The share one can eat and enjoy,”
- “Happiness that one tangibly experiences and tastes.”
One, wholeness, a Heaven-given share
While 一 basically means “one,” in ancient thought it also symbolized
“the whole, completeness, the fundamental.”
Thus the combination 一 + 口 in 福 is often understood as:
- “The (single) portion that Heaven allows,”
- “The share allotted to each person,”
- “Food and provision in appropriate measure.”
That is, 福 also contains the perspective that:
“Blessing is the amount of sustenance and life given in a measure I can bear and that fits me.”
If it is too little, it brings suffering;
if it is too much and we cannot handle it, it can become misfortune (禍).
Thus, “the suitably given portion that one can truly enjoy” is regarded as blessing.
The entire right side 畐 – A state of fullness and being filled
In fact, the right side of 福 is often thought to derive from the independent character 畐.
畐 consists of 田 (“field”) with 一 and 口 added over it, and has the meaning of
“a vessel or container being full,” “filled up.”
So the original sense of 畐 is: fullness, abundance, a state of being filled to overflowing.
If we see 福 as: 福 = 示 + 畐
then its meaning becomes:“To offer oneself before the divine (Heaven) and receive from it
a state of fullness and abundance”—and this is precisely what “blessing” signifies.
Summarizing the combined meaning
Breaking 福 down by its components, we may summarize:
- 示: the altar visible before Heaven/the gods; praying and petitioning
- 田: field, land, the material basis of life
- 口: the mouth that actually eats and enjoys
- 一: a single, rightly measured portion
- 畐 (the whole right side): a state of being fully filled and abundant
Putting it all together, 福 broadly embraces:
- A state in which the conditions of one’s fields, property, and life
are abundantly filled, in a measure that Heaven has allowed, - So that one can eat with one’s mouth and enjoy with one’s body,
- And a way of life that responds to this with ritual, gratitude, and reverence.
Thus, in the traditional Sino-character cultural sphere, “bok” (福) is:
- Neither purely an abstract inner happiness,
- Nor the same as materialistic wealth (富),
but is closer to a concept that combines: a suitable measure of abundance granted by Heaven
an attitude of gratitude and reverence.
Seen in connection with the New Year’s greeting
When we say, at Lunar New Year or Seollal, “Saehae bok mani badeuseyo
(May you receive many blessings in the new year),”
and recall each stroke in 福, we can infuse the greeting with this intention:
- That this year, worries about making a living may lessen (田, 口),
- That a good and fitting share may be granted to each person (一),
- That in all of this, we may keep a grateful heart and not forget the right path (示),
- And that our lives may become full and abundant (畐).
In this way, all that hope is condensed into that single character 福.
What is the root of “bok” (福) as Koreans understand it?
In Korean culture, “bok” (福, blessing) is a very multi-dimensional concept.
It does not simply mean money or luck.
The traditional idea of the “Five Blessings” (五福), handed down since the Joseon era, shows
this well:
- 壽 (su): long life
- 富 (bu): ample wealth
- 康寧 (gangnyeong): physical and mental peace
- 攸好德 (yuho-deok): loving and cultivating virtue
- 考終命 (gojongmyeong): finishing one’s life well
What is striking here is that “virtue” and “a good ending” are counted as core elements of blessing.
People of old already understood blessing not as something “obtained by sheer luck,”
but as the attitude and outcome of one’s life.
A Buddhist tale on blessing – “Blessing is something you accumulate”
In Buddhism, blessing is often expressed with the word 福德 (bokdeok—“blessing and virtue”).
Blessing and virtue are inseparable. The reason is simple:
blessing has a cause, and that cause is action.
A Buddhist story: The poor woman’s lamp
There is a story often told in Buddhist scriptures.
One day, many people came to the temple where the Buddha was staying and offered lamps.
The wealthy lit dozens of large lamps, and the temple shone bright through the night.
Among them, however, there was one small, shabby lamp.
It had been lit with all the worldly possessions of a poor woman.
As the night grew late and the wind blew, the other lamps went out one by one,
but that small lamp alone did not go out.
When the disciples asked why, the Buddha said:
“This lamp was lit not with wealth but with her heart; therefore its blessing endures long.”
The blessing that this story speaks of is clear:
blessing does not depend on size, but on the intention and heart behind the act.
In Buddhism, blessing is not a gift that falls on us by chance.
It is the natural fruit borne of accumulated wholesome deeds (karma).
Thus Buddhism repeatedly teaches:
- Rather than merely praying for blessing, create blessing.
- Rather than only desiring results, set the causes right.
In other words, blessing is the response that a way of life brings forth.
What the Bible says about blessing – “Blessing is not a possession but a state”
In the Bible, representative words for “blessing” are:
- In Hebrew: barak
- In Greek: makarios
What these words have in common is that they point less to “material abundance”
and more to a state of being.
The Beatitudes of Jesus
In Matthew chapter 5, Jesus says:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
Strikingly, there is no “rich, successful, or powerful” person here.
Instead, those who are empty, who grieve, who are gentle and restrained are called blessed.
Biblically, blessing can be defined this way:
“Blessing is not the state of having much,
but the state in which one’s relationship with God is rightly ordered.”
Because of this, biblical blessing transcends circumstances.
Even in prison, in the wilderness, or in outward lack,
if the heart does not collapse, that is blessing.
Where Buddhism and the Bible meet
On the surface, Buddhism and Christianity appear very different.
Yet on the topic of “blessing,” they offer surprisingly similar messages:
Buddhism Bible
Blessing is the result of karma (deeds) Blessing is the result of relationship
Blessing is accumulated Blessing is given
The heart is crucial The heart is crucial
Attachment brings suffering Attachment is idolatry
Both, in essence, say:
“Blessing does not begin with external conditions, but with the direction of the inner life.”
Even if you have money, if you are anxious, it is not blessing.
Even if you are successful, if your relationships collapse, it is not blessing.
Even if you are healthy, if your heart is desolate, we cannot truly call it blessing.
The kind of blessing we should seek in the New Year
So when we say at Lunar New Year, “Saehae bok mani badeuseyo
(May you receive many blessings in the new year),” how about adding, quietly in your heart,
the following wishes:
- May this be a year in which you choose the blessings you will accumulate.
- May this be a year in which you enjoy a peace that cannot be taken away.
- May this be a year in which you gain depth rather than mere increase.
Buddhist tales and the Bible, in the end, both tell us:
“Blessing is not something that just falls from the sky,
but the shadow that naturally follows when the direction of a life is right.”
Dear readers, may the words “Saehae bok mani badeuseyo”
be more than a simple seasonal greeting—may they become a deep blessing spoken over your life.
And I pray that your year will be blessed, not because you have much, but because you stand rightly.
