Beyond the Desire Realm and the Form Realm,
the Most Serene Heavenly World Where Only the Mind Remains

In Buddhism, the heavenly realms do not simply mean “good places one goes to after death.”

Rather, the Buddhist heavenly worlds can be understood as vast spiritual realms divided

according to what kinds of desires living beings carry and what level of mind they dwell in.

The Desire Realm (欲界), which we looked at earlier, is literally a world where desire still remains.

It is a realm where beings still have the wish to eat, drink, see, hear, love, enjoy, and possess.
The human world also belongs to this Desire Realm.

Above it lies the Form Realm (色界).
In this realm, much of desire has disappeared, but subtle forms and bodies of light still remain.

It is a calm and pure heaven into which beings are born through the power of meditation and

spiritual practice.

Unlike the Desire Realm, there is no coarse greed here, but the form of “existence” still remains.

Then what is the Formless Realm (無色界), which is even higher than this?

As the name suggests, it is a world without form.

There is no body, no palace, no shining robe, and no celestial music.

It is completely different from the “heaven above the clouds” that we commonly imagine.

The Formless Realm may be described as a state in which shapes have disappeared, sensations

have disappeared, and the material world has disappeared, leaving behind only an extremely

subtle consciousness.

1. What Is the Formless Realm?

The Formless Realm (無色界) is called Ārūpadhātu in Sanskrit.

Here, “arūpa” means “without form,” and “dhātu” means “world” or “realm.”

In other words, the Formless Realm is a world of beings without physical form.

In the Buddhist worldview, the realms in which sentient beings live are broadly divided into three categories.

Category                                  Meaning                                     Main Characteristics

Desire Realm (欲界) The world of desire Contains appetite, sensual desire, possessiveness, and pleasures of the senses
Form Realm (色界) The world of form Desires are weak, but subtle bodies and forms of light still remain
Formless Realm (無色界) The world without form Body and matter disappear, leaving only a state of pure consciousness

The important point here is that the Formless Realm does not simply mean “the best heaven.”

In Buddhism, no matter how high a heavenly realm may be, if it still exists within the cycle of rebirth,

it is not considered eternal liberation.

The Formless Realm is extremely quiet, extremely subtle, and a realm of deep meditative absorption

beyond ordinary human imagination.

However, it still belongs to the world of arising and passing away.
Where there is birth, there is also disappearance; where there is abiding, there will one day be an end.

In other words, the Formless Realm is described in Buddhist practice as a very high spiritual state,

but it is not the same as Nirvana (涅槃).

2. Why Is It Called “the World Without Form”?

When we usually think of existence, we first imagine a body.

Human beings have human bodies, animals have animal bodies, and celestial beings are thought to

have celestial bodies.

The heavenly beings of the Desire Realm are described as beings with beautiful bodies, palaces,

precious ornaments, music, and fragrance.

The heavenly beings of the Form Realm are far purer than those of the Desire Realm, but they still

possess radiant bodies and a world of light.

However, when one reaches the Formless Realm, even these forms disappear.

This does not mean that it is a complete nothingness where absolutely nothing exists.

In Buddhism, the Formless Realm refers to a state in which there is no material form, but the flow

of consciousness still remains.

It can be compared in this way:

If the Desire Realm is like a colorful marketplace,

and the Form Realm is like a quiet Dharma hall in a mountain temple,

then the Formless Realm is like the vast empty space within deep meditation, where all sounds

and shapes have vanished.

Nothing is visible, yet an extremely subtle awareness remains.

There is almost no movement, but the flow of existence is not completely cut off.

For this reason, the Formless Realm may be described as a heaven of bodiless consciousness,

or a world of pure spirit.

3. The Four Heavens of the Formless Realm

In Buddhism, the Formless Realm is further divided into four stages.

These are usually explained in connection with the Four Heavens of the Formless Realm or the

Four Formless Meditative Absorptions (四無色定).

The four heavens are as follows:

Order   Heaven of the Formless Realm     Chinese Characters                   Core Meaning

1 Heaven of Infinite Space A realm where one contemplates that space is boundless
2 Heaven of Infinite Consciousness A realm where one contemplates that consciousness is boundless
A realm where one contemplates that there is nothing to possess
4 Heaven of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception A realm that is neither a state of thought nor a state without thought

Rather than understanding these four stages as ordinary heavenly worlds with palaces in the four directions

or kingdoms ruled by celestial kings, it is better to see them as stages in which a practitioner’s state of

meditative absorption becomes deeper and deeper.

In other words, the Formless Realm is not so much a heaven located high up in physical space, but rather

a spiritual dimension in which the mind becomes increasingly subtle and the sense of existence grows

more and more faint.

1) Heaven of Infinite Space

The Heaven Where One Experiences Boundless Space

The first heaven of the Formless Realm is the Heaven of Infinite Space

In Sanskrit, it is called Ākāśānantyāyatana, meaning “the realm where space is boundless.”

A practitioner who has reached the final stage of the Form Realm realizes that even there,

subtle form still remains.

When the practitioner seeks to go beyond even that subtle form, the mind no longer abides in any

object or appearance.

At that moment, the practitioner contemplates:

“Space is boundless.”

“Space is infinite.”

“There is no form that I can grasp.”

As this contemplation deepens, consciousness expands as though it has become endless space itself.

The sensation of having a body disappears.
There is no above or below, no east, west, south, or north, and no sense of center or edge.

The Heaven of Infinite Space is described as a realm into which beings are born as a result of this

meditative absorption.

Characteristics of the Heaven of Infinite Space

The essence of the Heaven of Infinite Space is the sense of infinite spaciousness.

Here, there are none of the pleasures of the Desire Realm and none of the radiant forms of the Form

Realm.

Only the perception of “boundless space” unfolds in profound stillness.

When we look up at the night sky and gaze into the deep darkness between the stars, we sometimes

suddenly feel how small human life is.

The Heaven of Infinite Space may be compared to a state in which that feeling is carried much deeper

and made far more subtle.

Yet even here, there is still a limitation.

This is because the perception that “space is boundless” still remains.

In other words, the mind is still taking space as its object.

In Buddhism, no matter how peaceful a state of meditative absorption may be, if the mind is still

resting upon some object, it is not yet considered complete liberation.

2) Heaven of Infinite Consciousness

The Heaven Where One Experiences Boundless Consciousness

The second heaven of the Formless Realm is the Heaven of Infinite Consciousness

In Sanskrit, it is called Vijñānānantyāyatana, meaning “the realm where consciousness is boundless.”

In the Heaven of Infinite Space, one contemplates that space is infinite.

However, as practice deepens, the practitioner comes to realize something even more subtle:

“Even the space that I perceived as infinite was, in the end, recognized within my consciousness.”

“What is more fundamental than space is the consciousness that knows it.”

Therefore, this time, the practitioner does not contemplate space, but rather consciousness itself as

boundless.

This is the Heaven of Infinite Consciousness.

Characteristics of the Heaven of Infinite Consciousness

In a word, the Heaven of Infinite Consciousness is a world of boundless consciousness.

Here, there is no matter, no body, and even the object called space becomes faint.

Instead, “awareness,” “consciousness,” and “the flow of perception” seem to unfold endlessly.

To put it metaphorically, if the Heaven of Infinite Space is a state of gazing upon an endless sky,

then the Heaven of Infinite Consciousness is a state in which the very mind that gazes upon that sky

expands without limit.

At this stage, even the sense of “I” becomes extremely faint.

However, it has not completely disappeared.

This is because a subtle perception still remains: “Consciousness is boundless.”

In other words, the mind is still abiding in the object called “boundless consciousness.”

What is interesting is that this stage also gives modern people a mysterious sense of imagination.

We sometimes use expressions such as “cosmic consciousness,” “collective consciousness,” or

“pure consciousness.”

Of course, the Buddhist Heaven of Infinite Consciousness cannot be directly equated with these

modern expressions.

Still, there is some common ground in the fact that human beings have long imagined “the boundless

-ness of consciousness” beyond the limits of the physical body.

3) Heaven of Nothingness (無所有處天)

The Heaven Where One Experiences That There Is Nothing to Grasp

The third heaven of the Formless Realm is the Heaven of Nothingness

In Sanskrit, it is called Ākiṃcanyāyatana, meaning “the realm of nothingness.”

In the Heaven of Infinite Consciousness, one contemplates that consciousness is boundless.

However, as practice deepens, the practitioner once again discovers an even more subtle form of

attachment.

“Is not the thought that consciousness is boundless also a kind of grasping?”

“Is not even this thing called consciousness an object upon which I am relying?”

Therefore, at this stage, the practitioner lets go even of the idea of “boundless consciousness.”

As a result, the mind contemplates:

“There is nothing.”

“There is nothing for me to possess, and nothing for me to grasp.”

“There is no object upon which I can rely.”

This is the Heaven of Nothingness.

Characteristics of the Heaven of Nothingness

The Heaven of Nothingness does not simply mean poverty or having no possessions.

The “nothingness” spoken of here goes far beyond the idea of owning fewer material things.

In this realm, nothingness means a state in which there is no object left for the mind to grasp.

Beings in the Desire Realm grasp at wealth, honor, people, and sensory pleasures.

Beings in the Form Realm abide in pure meditative absorption and a world of light.

The Heaven of Infinite Space still grasps boundless space, and the Heaven of Infinite Consciousness

still grasps boundless consciousness.

However, in the Heaven of Nothingness, even these are let go.

Not only the sense of “mine,”

but also the sense of “something I can rely on,” almost disappears.

For this reason, this realm is described as a world of profound stillness and emptiness.

Yet even here, there is still a problem.

The perception that “there is nothing” still remains.

In other words, the Heaven of Nothingness is an extremely high realm of meditative absorption,

but it still abides in the concept of “nothingness.”

In Buddhism, attachment to “existence” is a problem, but attachment to “non-existence” is also not

considered complete enlightenment.

Therefore, the Heaven of Nothingness is still not Nirvana.

4) Heaven of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception

The Most Subtle Heaven, Where Thought Is Neither Present nor Absent

The fourth and highest heaven of the Formless Realm is the Heaven of Neither Perception nor

In Sanskrit, it is called Naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatana.

This name is quite difficult to understand.

When interpreted through the Chinese characters, it means “the realm that is neither a state of

thought nor a state without thought.”

As the name itself suggests, this world is the most difficult stage to explain in human language.

To say that thought exists there would be inaccurate, because it is too subtle to be called thought.

Yet to say that thought does not exist would also be inaccurate, because it has not been completely

cut off.

For this reason, it is called “Neither Perception nor Non-Perception” — a state that is neither
thought nor the absence of thought.

Characteristics of the Heaven of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception

The Heaven of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception is the most subtle state of consciousness
within the Formless Realm.

There is almost no sensation, almost no thought, and even the feeling of existence is extremely faint.

In Buddhist tradition, this heaven is described as having an extraordinarily long lifespan.

Because it is so long-lasting and so peaceful, beings dwelling there may mistakenly believe that they

have reached an eternal state.

However, Buddhism clearly states even here:

The Heaven of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception is not eternal.

No matter how subtle and peaceful a heavenly realm may be, if one is born there through karma,

its lifespan will eventually come to an end.

This point is very important.

That is because many practitioners may mistake the stillness of deep meditative absorption for

enlightenment.

When thought has almost disappeared, when defilements do not arise, and when even the sensation

of the body is gone, it can feel as though all problems have finally ended.

However, liberation in Buddhism does not simply mean abiding in a peaceful state.

Liberation means completely cutting off the roots of ignorance and attachment.

The Heaven of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception is close to the most subtle state within the

world of rebirth, but it still remains within the realm of samsara.

4. Summary of the Flow of the Formless Realm

When viewed step by step, the four heavens of the Formless Realm follow the flow shown below.

Stage            Heaven                             Practitioner’s Contemplation         Subtle Attachment That Still Remains

1 Heaven of Infinite Space Space is boundless The perception of infinite space
2 Heaven of Infinite Consciousness Consciousness is boundless The perception of infinite consciousness
3 Heaven of Nothingness There is nothing The perception of nothingness
4 Heaven of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception It is neither thought nor the absence of thought An extremely subtle sense of existence

Looking at this table, the flow of practice within the Formless Realm becomes a little clearer.

At first, one lets go of form.

Next, one goes beyond space.

Then, one lets go even of consciousness.

Finally, even the distinction between thought and the absence of thought becomes faint.

For this reason, the Formless Realm may be called the most subtle heaven of the mind in the Buddhist

worldview.

5. The Appearance and Lifespan of Beings in the Formless Realm

As its name suggests, the Formless Realm is a world without form.
Therefore, unlike the Desire Realm or the Form Realm, it is difficult to describe the height, face,

clothing, or palaces of its heavenly beings in concrete terms.

The heavenly beings of the Desire Realm are described as beings with beautiful faces and shining

garments.

The heavenly beings of the Form Realm are described as purer beings, possessing bodies made

of radiance.

However, beings of the Formless Realm have no material bodies, so it is not possible to say what

hey “look like.”

It is more natural to understand them as existing not in physical form, but as states of consciousness.

Traditionally, the lifespans of beings in the Formless Realm are described as being so long that they

are almost impossible to imagine in terms of human time.

Heaven of the Formless Realm       Core of the Traditional Description          Symbolic Meaning

Heaven of Infinite Space A very long lifespan A sense of existence as vast as space
Heaven of Infinite Consciousness An even longer lifespan than the Heaven of Infinite Space The infinite expansion of consciousness
Heaven of Nothingness An even longer lifespan Stillness with nothing to grasp
Heaven of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception The longest lifespan among the Formless Realms An extremely subtle consciousness that seems almost to disappear

It is possible to calculate these lifespans literally according to traditional numbers, but for blog readers,

their meaning is more important than the numbers themselves.

The long lifespans of the Formless Realm symbolize the great strength of deep meditative absorption

and the very slight movement of the mind.

Where there is much movement, change also comes quickly.

Where there is much desire, there are many afflictions; and where there are many afflictions, life is

easily shaken.

On the other hand, the quieter and more subtle the mind becomes, the slower the movement of existence

becomes.

The long lifespan of the Formless Realm shows precisely this extreme limit of spiritual stillness.

6. Is the Formless Realm Heaven or Enlightenment?

When many people hear about the heavenly realms in Buddhism, they often ask:

“Then is the Formless Realm the highest heaven?”

“If one reaches that realm, does one become a Buddha?”

“Is the Heaven of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception the same as Nirvana?”

To give the conclusion first: No, it is not.

The Formless Realm is a very high realm, but it is not the ultimate goal taught in Buddhism.

This is because the Formless Realm still remains within the Three Realms (三界).

The Three Realms refer to the Desire Realm, the Form Realm, and the Formless Realm combined.

In other words, they include all the worlds in which sentient beings continue to wander within the

cycle of rebirth.

The ultimate goal of Buddhism is not to be reborn in a better place within the Three Realms,

but to go beyond the Three Realms altogether.

For this reason, Buddhism uses the expression:

The Three Realms Are Like a Burning House

This means that the Three Realms are like a house on fire.

It is not only the Desire Realm that is a burning house.

The Form Realm and the Formless Realm are also still inside the house of samsara.

Of course, the Formless Realm is not like the fierce flames of the Desire Realm.

It is more like quiet ashes that appear to have almost gone out.

But the ember has not completely disappeared.

That ember is ignorance (無明) and subtle attachment.

7. Does the Buddha Dwell in the Formless Realm?

Those who are new to Buddhism often ask this question:

“Then does the Buddha dwell in the highest realm, the Formless Realm?”

From the Buddhist perspective, the Buddha is not a being confined to any particular heaven.

The Buddha is understood as one who has penetrated, through enlightenment, the limits of the

Three Realms — the Desire Realm, the Form Realm, and the Formless Realm — and has gone

beyond them.

Of course, in Buddhist scriptures, there are scenes in which the Buddha ascends to various heavenly

realms and gives teachings.

One famous story tells of the Buddha ascending to the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, or Trāyastriṃśa

Heaven, to teach the Dharma for the sake of his mother, Queen Māyā.

However, this does not mean that the Buddha belongs to that heaven.

Rather, the Buddha is described as one who is not bound by any world, but appears wherever needed

in order to guide and teach sentient beings.

Therefore, no matter how high the Formless Realm may be, it is not the same as the Buddha’s

enlightenment.

The Formless Realm is a realm of lofty meditative absorption, while the Buddha’s enlightenment is

the perfection of wisdom that goes beyond even such meditative absorption.

8. Lessons the Formless Realm Gives to Our Lives

The story of the Formless Realm may feel like something too lofty and distant.

However, this story offers surprisingly practical lessons for those of us living today.

Most of us live lives that are closely connected to the Desire Realm.

We want good food, a good home, nice clothes, money, recognition, love, success, health, and honor.

This does not mean such desires are bad.
As human beings, they are natural.

The problem is that when we become too attached to them, the mind cannot rest.

If we look a little deeper, we see that we are attached not only to material things, but also to our thoughts.

“I am this kind of person.”

“I am right.”

“My way is correct.”

“The experience I have accumulated is everything.”

These thoughts, too, are a kind of form.

They are not visible to the eye, but they are shapes hardened within the mind.

The Formless Realm asks us:

“What are you holding on to?”

“What is the boundless space that you endlessly trust?”

“What is the consciousness you cannot let go of?”

“Even while saying there is nothing, are you perhaps still clinging to the very idea of nothingness?”

These questions resonate deeply not only with practitioners, but also with modern people.

We often feel secure only when we possess something.

Yet there are people who remain anxious even when they have much, and there are people who are

peaceful even when they have little.

In the end, the real issue is not the amount of things we own, but what the mind is bound to.

The teaching of the Formless Realm is not a simple instruction to abandon all possessions

unconditionally.

Rather, at a deeper level, it is a teaching that asks us to examine every support and refuge created

by the mind.

9. The Difference Between the Desire Realm, the Form Realm,
and the Formless Realm

The three realms we have examined so far can be summarized at a glance as follows:

Category      Nature of the Realm      Form of Existence             Core Attachment                   Buddhist Meaning
Desire Realm A world of senses and desire Coarse bodies and senses exist Pleasure, possession, attachment The reality of human life and desire
Form Realm A world of pure form Subtle bodies of light exist The joy of meditation, pure form Stillness beyond desire
Formless Realm A world of consciousness without form No material body exists Space, consciousness, nothingness, subtle thought The most subtle realm of meditative absorption

These three realms are not simply places one goes after death.

To some extent, they can also be found within our own minds right now.

When the mind is dragged around by desire, it is close to the Desire Realm.

When the mind rests in calm and clear concentration, it somewhat resembles the nature of the Form Realm.

And in deep silence, where one tries to let go of all forms and thoughts, one may sense a shadow of the

Formless Realm.

Of course, this is a metaphorical explanation.

Still, what makes the Buddhist worldview so fascinating is that it is not merely a map of the cosmos,

but also a map of the human mind.

10. The True Message of the Formless Realm

The Formless Realm is a world that goes beyond human imagination.

There are no flowers there, no palaces, and no celestial music.

There are no beautiful faces of heavenly beings, and no shining treasures.

Only an extremely subtle flow of consciousness remains, transcending all form.

And yet, Buddhism does not regard even this lofty Formless Realm as the final destination.

Why is that?

The reason is clear.

Stillness itself is not enlightenment.

A long lifespan itself is not liberation.

The fading of thought itself is not wisdom.

True enlightenment in Buddhism is not simply being reborn in a better world.

It is freedom from being bound to any world at all.

Not being bound by the pleasures of the Desire Realm,

not being bound by the purity of the Form Realm,

and not being bound by the stillness of the Formless Realm.

This is the direction of liberation taught in Buddhism.

In Closing

Even at the Edge of Heaven, the Path Still Continues

The Formless Realm is one of the most mysterious and philosophical realms in the Buddhist heavenly

worlds.

It is not splendid like the Desire Realm, nor does it shine like the Form Realm.

Rather, it is a world where all light and shape have disappeared, leaving behind only the most subtle

trace of existence and consciousness.

The Heaven of Infinite Space says, “Space is boundless.”

The Heaven of Infinite Consciousness says, “Consciousness is boundless.”

The Heaven of Nothingness says, “There is nothing to grasp.”

The Heaven of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception says, “It is neither a state of thought nor a

state without thought.”

Yet beyond all of these, the Buddha’s teaching quietly speaks once more:

“Do not cling even to those states.”

Perhaps this single sentence is the deepest message that the story of the Formless Realm gives us.

Even if one rises to the very end of the heavenly worlds, the path to enlightenment still remains.

What truly matters in Buddhism is not where one is reborn, but what one is no longer bound by.

When we are no longer bound by desire,

no longer bound by form,

no longer bound by stillness,

and finally able to gently let go even of the thought called “I,”

then, at last, the door to true freedom — the door to Nirvana — may quietly open.
