Christmas is a day that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, but in ancient

Rome and Egypt, where there was a tradition of worshiping the sun god,

people held festivals around the winter solstice. It is said that Pope Julius I

of Rome began to celebrate this festival as the birthday of Jesus Christ, and

that is what became Christmas, which is now only a few weeks away.

In Korea, Christmas is said to have become known when the foreign

missionary Underwood, in 1887, held worship services in his sarangbang

(guest room) with several Joseon people, shared fellowship with them,

and then invited them to celebrate Christmas that same year.

Empress Myeongseong once invited Mrs. Underwood, the wife of Pastor

Underwood, and asked her many questions about Christmas.

The missionary work they began in Korea was carried out more through

schools than churches. Appenzeller founded Korea’s first Western-style

educational institution, “Paichai Hakdang,” along with Jeongdong First

Methodist Church, while Underwood established “Yeonhui College” and

organized the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA).

At that time, instead of the Christmas trees we commonly see today,

Korean Christians—accustomed to the custom since the Three Kingdoms

period of hanging lotus lanterns during the New Year or Buddha’s Birthday

—celebrated Christmas by lighting lanterns.

The customs surrounding Christmas gradually began to change, and when

Yoon Sim-deok, who published “Praise of Death” in 1926, released “Santa

Claus,” known as Korea’s first Christmas carol, the term “Christmas present,”

referring to the exchange of gifts at Christmas, naturally came into use.

When December comes, small, twinkling lights are lit along the streets of the city.

Most people see them as simple decorations, but for some, those lights feel like

fragments of long-lost memories and love.

Like the warm Christmas scene the little match girl sees for the last time in

Andersen’s fairy tale, there is a love in this world that remains as light and

wraps itself around us.

The core biblical teaching, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” from Matthew

22:39, is a verse I like, even though I am not a Christian.

On the bus, people giving up their seats for one another; someone donating

their change at the convenience store counter; a short text message of

concern, finally sent after much hesitation—within these quiet actions lies

the true substance of love, ungrand and unpretentious.

Christmas finds its deeper meaning not in dazzling trees, but in these small

moments of warmth that come together. Perhaps love is not what sits inside

a gift box, but what lives in the very process of gathering one’s heart to give

that gift.

The brighter the light of joy, the darker the shadow it casts. Christmas is a

happy season for some, but for others, it is a time when memories they

would rather forget resurface.

Every year around this time, newspaper articles report statistics on “increased

feelings of loss.” As much as Christmas symbolizes warmth, it is also a day

when the empty place left by those who are gone is felt more keenly.

Some people, around this season, think of parents who have passed away.

Others remember friends who have grown distant, a love they ultimately

could not hold on to, or a dream they have already let go of.

That is why Christmas is as much a season of quiet sorrow as it is of joy.

There is a line in an old European folktale that goes:
“Winter writes the names of the lost upon the snow.”

As these words suggest, at the end of the year we recall the things that

were most precious to us.

Was the single tear shed by “The Little Match Girl” because of her own

sorrow? Or was it a tear of gratitude for the brief warmth of a burning match?

(The Gift of the Magi)」을 아는 사람도

Some may also know O. Henry’s short story “The Gift of the Magi.”

In it, a young couple, Jim and Della, are facing Christmas.

They long to give each other presents, but their circumstances are far too poor.

Della’s only pride was her long hair, and for Jim, the gold watch he had

inherited from his father was his most precious treasure.

Thinking of each other, the two of them eventually decided to give up

their “everything.”

Della cut off her hair and sold it, and with the money she bought a fine chain

for Jim’s watch. Jim, in turn, sold his gold watch and bought a beautiful set

of combs to adorn Della’s hair.

On Christmas evening, as they exchanged gifts, they finally realized the truth:

each had already given up their most precious possession for the other.

Perhaps the gifts themselves could no longer be used, but in that moment

they were the most love-filled couple in the world.

Love is not sharing what is left over after all the calculations are done; perhaps

it begins in a heart that can give away what it cherishes most, without a trace

of regret.

In Matthew 18, it also says that “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye

of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven,” and that

“unless you become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of

heaven.” In the end, doesn’t this mean we should let go of greed and live

as true human beings?

Isn’t it a childlike heart—pure and white like lamb’s wool—that makes this

world clean and beautiful? A pure and kind heart is what makes the true

meaning of Christmas shine.

“Is the child in my heart still alive?”

If that child is still quietly breathing within you, then you, too, are ready to

welcome a miracle this year.

Let’s gaze for a moment out the window at the falling snow and imagine:

tonight, the Santa we believed in long ago comes again, hands full of gifts,

and gently knocks on the door of our hearts.

If that were so, even now, as adults, we would still find ourselves smiling.
A child’s heart does not disappear; it is only fast asleep, deep within.

Christmas is the season that gently awakens that child.

Have you ever received an unexpected comforting KakaoTalk message

when you were feeling lonely and overwhelmed with sorrow?
Even a playful line like, “Cheer up, my awesome friend!” is enough.

If you’ve experienced that, then your life is already a success.

The simple fact that someone has not forgotten you is enough to warm

your life all over again.

A cup of warm tea, a scarf handed to you because it might be cold, a casual

“Good job today” as you head home—within these simple gestures, people

catch their breath again and gain just enough strength to go on living.

In an ancient winter tale from Northern Europe, there is a line that goes:

“Snow falls cold, but the footsteps of those who walk upon it leave warmth in

the ground.”

크리스마스는 Christ(그리스도) 와 Festival(축제일)이란 뜻의 Mas 가 합쳐져서

“Christmas” is a compound word made from “Christ” and “Mas,” the latter

meaning “festival day,” so it literally means “the festival day of Christ.”

However, it was only in the 19th century that it became a holiday not just for

church believers but for people all over the world.

Christmas is also sometimes written as “X-MAS.” The “X” comes from the first

letter of the Greek word for “Christ,” chi (Χ), and “Mas” is added after it to form

the compound.

Of course, reading it as “Ex-mas” is incorrect—but what is this “X”?
In middle school math, when we first learn linear equations, we use “X” to

represent an unknown quantity—something whose value we do not yet know.

It is, in other words, a festival day for “X.”
This “X” might stand for Jesus, or for the little match girl shivering in the cold

winter, or even for those high-ranking officials whose faces shine with excess

oil from having consumed too much wealth.

When we substitute those officials into this unknown “X” and try to solve the

equation, no answer comes out—in other words, the result is “no solution.”
I believe that you, the readers of this piece, will all be able to solve the equation.

If you substitute “love” for X, it becomes a “festival of love.”
If you substitute “dream,” it becomes a “festival of dreams.”
If you substitute your lover’s name, it becomes a “festival for your beloved.”
If you substitute your parents, it becomes a “festival for parents.”

In this sense, perhaps Jesus Christ lowered himself so that, instead of only

bearing his own name, anyone in this world could write their own name into

that “X” and find comfort there.

This Christmas, let us fill that “X” with whatever hope we most deeply desire.
And let us decide that “the things that make us sad” will, at last, disappear

from this world forever.

If we put “the whole world” into X, it becomes a “festival for the whole world.”
If we put “faith, hope, and love” into X, it becomes a “festival of faith,” a “festival

of hope,” and a “festival of love.” Perhaps making the meaning of Jesus

Christ’s coming into this world a reality here on earth is his true desire.

I would like to close by sharing with you a passage from Anto(n) Schnack’s

The Things That Make Us Sad:

“As long as there are stars in our hearts, and as long as those stars continue to

shine upon us, we can always have hope.”
