단종의 비밀장례(“The Secret Funeral of King Danjong”)

The movie "The Man Who Lives With the King", recently a hot topic in broadcasting circles

and set for release on February 4, 2026, is a historical drama depicting the tragic exile of

Joseon’s 6th king, Danjong, and the story of the real person Eom Heung-do who stayed

by his side until the end.

After the young king Danjong (played by Park Ji-hoon), who was stripped of his throne by

his uncle Grand Prince Suyang, is exiled to the harsh Cheongnyeongpo in Yeongwol,

Gangwon-do, Eom Heung-do (played by Yoo Hae-jin), the local headman (village chief)

of Yeongwol, is tasked with attending to the exiled king.

Witnessing Danjong’s human anguish and sorrow, he develops deep loyalty, and even after

Danjong is executed—despite King Sejo’s strict order to exterminate three generations of

anyone who buries him—Eom recovers the body from the Donggang River and secretly

gives it a proper burial in a sunny place. This is the tale of that loyal subject.

Among the many unofficial histories about the tragic king Danjong, the novel "Danjong Aesah"

(The Tragic History of King Danjong) stands out most prominently.

"Danjong Aesah", which chronicles Danjong’s sorrowful life, is the long historical novel

serialized in the Dong-A Ilbo from November 30, 1928, to December 1, 1929, by Lee

Kwang-su.

This modern novel, serialized 217 times in the Dong-A Ilbo by Lee Kwang-su, covers the life

of Joseon’s 6th king, Danjong.

The novel tenderly depicts with sharp prose the tearful life of Danjong, sacrificed to the wicked

schemes of Han Myeong-hoe and Grand Prince Suyang, and it gained immense popularity

at the time, becoming one of Lee Kwang-su’s representative works.

Through the filthy plots devised by Han Myeong-hoe, Shin Suk-ju, Kwon Ram, and others,

numerous novel protagonists and loyal subjects meet their deaths, Danjong is demoted to

Prince Nosan and exiled to Yeongwol, and the sijo "Danjangga" (Song of Exile), said to

have been composed by Wang Bang-yeon—the Gold Guard commander escorting

Danjong—while sitting on Goktan Hill on his way back from Yeongwol to Hanyang, pierces

the heart.

"On this endless road of a million miles, parted from my fair lord,
With nowhere to place this heart, I sit by the stream—
Even that water, unlike mine, weeps as it flows through the night."

The "Jagyu Poem", said to have been written by Danjong at Jaguru during his exile at

Cheongnyeongpo (actually Cheonryongpo), evokes even more tears.

For a depiction of Danjong lamenting his fate to the cuckoo in exile, please also refer to

"The Cuckoo's Wailing Story."

In the novel, it is said that the official sent with the poison could not bring himself to present it

to Danjong and could only weep. Witnessing this, Gongseng (Jol) strangles Danjong with a

bowstring. After killing Danjong and stepping out the door, he coughs up blood and dies,

a narrative device that seems to foreshadow Sejo’s own ill‑fated destiny.

Heaven, too, meted out punishment upon this merciless Sejo; even he, who once ruled the

realm with authority, could not escape the stern law of karmic retribution.

The final years of Sejo—who deposed his young nephew Danjong and seized the throne—

are recorded as having been extremely painful, both physically and mentally.

Sejo suffered for a long time from a severe skin disease (evil sores) that covered his entire

body in boils that oozed pus, and it is said that he was tormented by nightmares in which

the spirit of Queen Hyeondeok—Danjong’s mother and his own sister‑in‑law—appeared in

ihis dreams to spit at him and heap curses upon him, so that he could not fall into a deep sleep.

The most devastating punishment from Heaven was that Sejo’s own sons, as though cursed

after their father’s usurpation of the throne, also met tragic ends.

The eldest son, Crown Prince Uigyeong (posthumously King Deokjong), died young at the age

of twenty, barely two years after Sejo’s accession. A popular unofficial tale holds that his illness

worsened and he died after the vengeful spirit of Queen Hyeondeok, Danjong’s mother,

appeared in his dream and spat at him—the so‑called “Curse of Queen Hyeondeok.”

Though he was deeply learned and gentle in character, he passed away without ever ascending

the throne.

The second son, King Yejong, ascended the throne at nineteen after his brother’s death, but his

reign lasted only one year and two months. His podiatric disease (a foot ailment) grew worse,

and he died suddenly at the early age of twenty, delivering yet another heavy blow to the royal

family after Sejo’s death.

The tragedy did not end with his children’s generation. Yejong’s eldest son, Grand Prince Inseong,

died at the age of three, and Crown Prince Uigyeong’s eldest son, Grand Prince Wolsan, yielded

the throne to his younger brother Seongjong and died at the age of thirty‑five.

These successive deaths were regarded by many people of the time as Heaven’s punishment

pon Sejo for putting Danjong to death.

Seduced by the intrigues of the treacherous Han Myeong‑hoe and his own lust for power,

Sejo killed his nephew; even more than 550 years later, he is still remembered as a very bad

king who murdered his nephew and usurped the throne. As a “warning to later generations,”

we must carefully examine past wrongs, mistakes, and dangerous signs in advance, and be

on our guard, so as not to suffer the same disasters in the future.

One can only hope that rulers like Trump, blinded by power and ambition and driving many

citizens into oppression and bitter tears, will not follow in Sejo’s footsteps.

Are you not afraid of the judgment that will befall your descendants?

May you reflect on the words of Ecclesiastes, “Vanity of vanities; all is vanity,” and cultivate the

wisdom to halt the ominous chariot wheels of fate that are slowly drawing near.
