Today, I’d like to talk about the “maehwa,” the plum blossom, known as the companion of
scholars, blooming amidst the snow.
Long ago, in a remote mountain village where the chill of winter had yet to fade, there lived
an old scholar.
Unconcerned with worldly affairs, he stayed in a small thatched cottage, quietly waiting for
spring to come.
Yet what he longed for was not the warm breeze, but the scent of spring that would arise from
a single plum tree he had planted in a corner of his yard.
One dawn, when snow lay thick on the ground and the wind blew bitterly, the scholar opened
his door and stepped outside, only to discover a small flower blooming among the white snow.
A white blossom, quietly opened in the piercing cold air.
In that moment, the words burst from the scholar’s lips:
“Ah, the Way has not disappeared.”
That flower was none other than the plum blossom.
(English Name) : Plum Blossom
Its scientific name is Prunus mume. In the West it is simply called the plum flower, but in
East Asian cultures it has long been revered as a flower with special symbolic meaning.
Flower Meanings
Nobility
Endurance
Integrity
The beginning of hope
Most of the plum blossom’s meanings arise from the idea of “blooming after enduring the cold.”
While other flowers wait for the warm spring sunshine, the plum blossom is the first to break
through the cold and bloom.
For this reason, scholars of the Joseon dynasty regarded the plum blossom as the foremost
among the “Four Gentlemen” (plum blossom, orchid, chrysanthemum, bamboo).
If the orchid symbolizes subtle grace, the chrysanthemum restraint, and bamboo uprightness,
then the plum blossom symbolizes a steadfast spirit in the midst of hardship.
Poems and Classical Verse about Plum Blossoms
Since ancient times, the plum blossom (maehwa) has been the flower most beloved by
East Asian literati.
Because of the resolute spirit it shows by blooming in the snow, countless classical Chinese
poems about it remain. Here are some representative and widely known works.
Plum Blossoms” (Meihua) by Wang Anshi
Translation
A few plum branches by the corner of the wall,
Defying the cold, they bloom alone.
Even from afar I know it is not snow,
For a subtle fragrance drifts to me.
This is the most famous classical poem on plum blossoms.
The line “凌寒獨自開” — “blooming alone, piercing the cold” — seems to have been
what firmly established the plum blossom as a symbol of integrity and purity.
Bu Suan Zi: Chanting the Plum Blossom” by Lu You
Translation
By the broken bridge outside the post station,
Lonely, it blooms with no one to claim it.
At dusk it already sorrows in solitude,
And now wind and rain assail it too.
봄을 다투려는 뜻 없고 It has no wish to vie bitterly for spring;
Let all the other flowers resent it as they will.
Even when fallen, ground to mud and dust,
Its fragrance alone remains as before
In this poem, Lu You portrays the plum blossom as a symbol of a loyal subject, and he
himself was a patriotic poet who grieved for his country.
The line “its fragrance alone remains as before” is a confession that “though the body may
wither, the resolve does not change.”
Lin Bu – The poet who took the plum blossom as his wife
It is said that Lin Bu, a recluse of the Song dynasty, refused official posts and lived with only plum
blossoms and cranes as his companions.
Let’s appreciate one of his poems:
Sparse shadows slant across the shallow, clear water,
A subtle fragrance drifts about in the yellow dusk of the moon.
To him, the plum blossom was not merely a flower, but a companion in life.
Du Fu – Courage that arrives before spring
Du Fu, the great poet of the Tang dynasty, found hope in plum blossoms even amid
the chaos of war.
The plum blossom does not wait for spring. It itself becomes spring.
Su Shi – Snow and plum blossoms
Su Shi, a great writer of the Northern Song, often contrasted snow and plum blossoms,
leaving us with words like these:
Snow is cold, but it has no fragrance.
The plum blossom, though it holds the cold within, gives off fragrance.
Hardship comes to everyone.
But whether you give off fragrance is up to you.
Plum-blossom sijo of Joseon scholars
In Korea, the most widely known verse praising plum blossoms is by Yi Saek at the
end of the Goryeo period:
“One branch of plum blossoms has bloomed in the snow,
so the light of spring has reached the world before anything else.”
In the Joseon era, because the plum blossom was regarded as the foremost of the Four
Gentlemen, it was often linked with the hearts of reclusive scholars, and lines like this
have been passed down:
“O flower that blooms alone in the snow,
your fragrance carries a thousand li.”
Toegye Yi Hwang took the plum blossom as a symbol of self-cultivation.
“The plum blossom blooms in stillness and, without a word, teaches me.”
For Toegye, the plum blossom seems to have been a symbol of moral cultivation, and from
the way it endures the cold, we can read the endurance required in the pursuit of learning.
The silent lesson the plum blossom gives us
If we look at the classical poems above, we can find common emotional themes in plum-
blossom poetry:
- Blooming in the snow (雪中開花) — flowering amid snow
- Solitude (孤獨) — standing alone
- Fragrance (暗香) — a quiet, subtle virtue
- Integrity (節槪) — unbending character
In this way, the plum blossom became not just a flower, but a noble emblem of the scholar’s spirit.
As in the “Season of Karma” piece I wrote a few days ago, the plum blossom may be the flower
that shows us the perseverance of a scholar who, though lonely and cold amid a snowstorm,
quietly and steadfastly waits for the right time.
These days, we grow anxious if we do not bloom earlier than others, and we think we have
fallen behind if we bloom later than they do.
But the plum blossom does not compete with spring; it simply waits in silence for the
“right time and conditions” to arrive.
And it sends out its fragrance quietly, without a sound, never striving to draw attention to itself.
Imitating the old poets, I have also tried composing a classical verse:
On the tip of the branch, the lingering snow has not yet fully melted,
Do not resent that spring’s light has not yet reached the bridge.
When the time arrives, without a word, the buds will smile and open.
When the destined moment comes, they will gently bloom for you.
What the plum blossom says to us
Are you, perhaps, exhausted by the pressure that you must bloom earlier than others?
The plum blossom speaks:
“I did not wait for spring to come.
When I bloomed, that place itself became spring.”
