When I look at the news these days, I can’t feel at ease.
Conflicts are breaking out all over the world, and tensions between nations are growing deeper
and deeper.
The president of the United States, once a free democratic nation, brandishes his power and
makes hardline statements, and has finally attacked Iran, plunging the world into chaotic
confusion; the war between Russia and Ukraine still continues, and our own country, with North
and South confronting each other, watches the international situation with anxious eyes.
Though science and civilization have advanced dazzlingly, it makes one wonder how we are to
bear the karmic consequences of one or two petty, greedy leaders—who parade their so‑called
“justice” to the front—making decisions that drive the hearts of people all over the world into
immense anxiety and fear, and what the future will hold.
At times like this, many people think:
“I just want to live in peace—why is the world so noisy and turbulent?”
“In the midst of this chaos, how are we supposed to live?”
In fact, this question is not unique to our times.
For thousands of years, humanity has lived amid war and conflict, and in that history, great
sages and philosophers have left us profound wisdom on what kind of mind and heart human
beings should live with.
Human history and war
Looking back at history, human civilization has advanced to an astonishing degree.
We live in an era where we send spacecraft to the moon, communicate instantly with
people on the other side of the globe, and even study invisible microorganisms.
And yet, the sight of human beings raising weapons against one another has not changed
much from thousands of years ago to now.
The ancient Greek historian Thucydides said this:
“The origins of war lie in fear, desire, and the craving for honor.”
This statement remains strikingly accurate today. Conflicts between nations, too, ultimately
arise from human fear and desire. The fear of losing power, the urge to gain more, and the
desire to flaunt one’s influence become the seeds of war.
Then how should an individual live in such a world?
The Buddha’s teaching of peace
The Buddha was someone who understood the human mind more deeply than anyone else.
Looking upon human suffering, he said:
“In this world, hatred never ceases by hatred. It only ceases by love.”
This is not just a simple religious admonition; it is a profound insight that penetrates the human
heart. When hatred is met with more hatred, conflict only grows, and revenge gives birth to further
revenge.
So the Buddha taught:
“First, govern your own mind.”
No matter how chaotic the world may be, a person whose mind is at peace is not swept away
by that chaos. In Buddhism, this is called “freedom of the mind.”
It means that the quality of one’s life is determined not by external circumstances but by the
state of one’s own heart.
The path of peace spoken by Jesus
Jesus, too, looked deeply into the conflicts of human society. On a mountain, he spoke to
the people, saying:
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”
Jesus did not call the strong or the powerful blessed.
Instead, he said that those who make peace are the most blessed of all.
He also said:
“Love your enemies.”
This may seem like a practically impossible teaching. Yet the core of what Jesus wanted to
convey is clear:
The only way to break the vicious cycle of conflict is through love and understanding.
Violence only begets more violence, but understanding opens up a new path.
Laozi’s quiet wisdom
Laozi, a giant of Eastern philosophy, looked upon the turmoil of human society and said:
“The world is in chaos because people are excessively greedy.”
Laozi believed that as human desire grows, so too does conflict. That is why he emphasized
the philosophy of wuwei ziran (non‑action and naturalness).
Do not try to forcibly control the world; instead, live in accordance with the natural flow.
He also left these words:
“One who does not contend with others finds no one in the world to contend with.”
Laozi’s philosophy poses an important question to us:
Do we really have to fight this much just to live?
Zhuangzi’s vision of the free human
Building on Laozi’s thought, Zhuangzi looked at human life from an even broader perspective.
He explained the reason for human suffering in this way:
“People suffer because they are trapped within standards of their own making.”
I must succeed.
I must get ahead of others.
I must possess more.
These kinds of standards drive people into endless competition.
Zhuangzi urged us to step out of such a life and cultivate a free mind instead.
A person who does not lose their own inner calm amid the noise of the world—that is a truly
wise human being.
One thing we must guard
The world is always noisy. In history, times of peace have been shorter than we think, and times
of conflict long.
Yet even in the midst of that, human beings have gone on loving, caring for their families,
and helping one another.
The more chaotic the world becomes, the more important one thing grows:
the heart of a single person.
The Buddha spoke of peace of mind.
Jesus spoke of love.
Laozi told us to lessen our greed.
Zhuangzi spoke of a free life.
If we weave together the teachings of these great thinkers, they ultimately form this message:
No matter what the world is like, a human being must live in a truly human way.
The truly strong person
Many people believe that those with great power are the ones who move the world.
But if we look at history, the people who truly changed the world were, for the most part, those
whose hearts were strong.
Those who spoke of peace in the face of violence,
those who spoke of love in the midst of hatred,
those who chose conscience over power—
they are the ones who have nudged human history, bit by bit, in a better direction.
That is why the truly strong person is not the one who holds power,
but the one who keeps their conscience.
The way we choose to live
In the end, the important question in life is this:
Not “What is the world like?”
but “How will I live?”
Just because the world is in turmoil does not mean we too must be swept into turmoil.
We can still
love others,
keep our conscience,
and maintain peace in our hearts.
This is the greatest power human beings possess.
Final reflection
Even today, conflicts continue in many parts of the world. Yet at the same time, someone is
cooking a meal for their family,
someone is comforting a friend, and someone is quietly praying.
Perhaps the true force that upholds the world is not vast powers,
but the small acts of kindness of ordinary people.
And so we should live like this: No matter how noisy the world becomes, do not lose the peace
in your heart, love people, and live in a way that keeps your conscience intact.
That may be the greatest way of life a human being can choose
in this age of war and confusion.
