I first learned during my trip to Sokcho that hidden in Goseong County — the northernmost region

of South Korea and the gateway to Mount Kumgang — lies a magnificent thousand-year-old Buddhist

temple of enormous scale.

Its name is Geonbongsa Temple. At one time, it is said to have overseen major temples such as

Sinheungsa Temple, Naksansa Temple, and Baekdamsa Temple as subsidiary temples, and

reportedly possessed an astonishing 3,183 rooms, making it one of the four greatest temples of

the Joseon Dynasty.

Although most of its buildings were tragically destroyed during the fierce Battle of Geonbongsan

in the Korean War, the mysterious founding legends and patriotic history embedded in that sacred

land still leave a profound impression today.

More fascinating than a history book and more mysterious than a legend — let us now dive into t

he captivating story behind the founding myths and legends of Geonbongsa Temple.

Its Name Changed Three Times? — The Fascinating Founding History of Geonbongsa Temple

The history of Geonbongsa Temple dates back about 1,500 years to the 7th year of King Beopheung

of Silla (520 AD).

It is said that the mysterious Goguryeo monk Ado Hwasang sensed the spiritual energy flowing

through the southern foothills of Mount Kumgang and founded the temple there.

At the time, its original name was “Wongaksa (圓覺寺).”

What makes this temple especially fascinating is that its name changed dramatically over the centuries.

Stage 1: Wongaksa (Silla Period)

The original name given by Ado Hwasang when he first established the temple.

Stage 2: Seobongsa (Early Goryeo Period)

In 937, Doseon Guksa — the royal teacher of King Taejo and a legendary master of feng shui — rebuilt

the temple on royal orders. During the reconstruction, he discovered a strange rock west of the temple

that resembled a phoenix. Because of this, the temple was renamed “Seobongsa (西鳳寺),” meaning

“Temple of the Western Phoenix.”

Stage 3: Geonbongsa (Late Goryeo Period)

Later, in 1358 during the reign of King Gongmin, the great monk Naong Hwasang restored the temple

once again.

He combined the character “Geon (乾),” representing the western heavenly trigram in the I Ching, with

“Bong (鳳),” meaning phoenix, creating the majestic name we know today: “Geonbongsa (乾鳳寺).”

Considering that the word “phoenix” appears twice in the temple’s naming history, one can imagine

just how auspicious and spiritually powerful this sacred site was believed to be.

‘A Chariot Descending from Heaven?’ — The Legend of the Manil Yeombul Society and the
  31
Patriarchs’ Journey to Paradise”

One of the most famous and mysterious legends surrounding Geonbongsa Temple is the story of

the “Manil Yeombulhoe (萬日念佛會),” which began in the 17th year of King Gyeongdeok of Silla

(758 AD).

The Manil Yeombulhoe was a Buddhist devotional gathering formed around a remarkable vow:
“Let us chant only ‘Namu Amitabul’ together for 10,000 days — nearly 27 years and 5 months

— and pray to reach the Pure Land paradise.”

It is said to have been the very first “10,000-Day Prayer Assembly” in Korean Buddhist history,

and its birthplace was none other than Geonbongsa Temple itself.

At the time, 31 monks led by Baljing Hwasang devoted their lives to the practice, sitting in deep

meditation while continuously chanting Buddhist prayers.

Meanwhile, 1,820 lay followers wholeheartedly supported them by offering food and clothing so

the monks could focus entirely on their spiritual discipline.

Then, in the year 787 — after nearly 27 years had passed and the 10,000-day prayer finally came

to an end — a miracle was said to have occurred.

The legend describes it like this:
“Suddenly, the sky became covered with clouds of five brilliant colors, and a sacred fragrance

spread throughout the mountains. Then a dazzling golden chariot descended from the heavens,

carrying away the 31 monks who had devoted themselves to prayer, ascending with them into

the sky toward the Pure Land.”

But the story does not end there.

It is said that after witnessing the monks ascend bodily into paradise, the remaining believers

were deeply moved and devoted themselves even more earnestly to Buddhist practice.

In time, the remaining followers also entered the Pure Land alive, one after another.

Because of this legendary event, Geonbongsa Temple became forever remembered among

Buddhists as:“The supreme sacred place of Buddhist chanting where sincere prayer inevitably

leads to enlightenment.”

The Serene Scenery of the ‘Jeokmyeolbogung Hall,’ Enshrining the Sacred Tooth Relic

  of the Buddha”

“Imjin War, Samyeongdang Yujeong, and the Mystery of the ‘Vanished Buddha Tooth Relic’”

The one story that can never be left out when speaking about Geonbongsa Temple is the sacred tooth

relic of the Buddha himself.

It is said that only two places in the world possess this extraordinary relic — Geonbongsa Temple

in South Korea and Sri Lanka. But behind this sacred relic lies a dramatic story worthy of a historical

espionage film.

Originally, the relic had been brought from Tang China by the great monk Jajang Yulsa during the

Silla period and enshrined at the ordination platform of Tongdosa Temple.

However, in 1592, when the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598) broke out, invading Japanese

forces stormed Tongdosa Temple and stole the sacred relic, taking it away to Japan.

The shocking news threw both the Buddhist community and the royal court into chaos.

At that moment, the man who stepped forward was none other than Samyeongdang Yujeong.

A patriotic monk and national hero, Samyeongdang Yujeong had raised a monk army from Geon-
bongsa Temple to help defend the nation during the war. After the conflict ended, he traveled to

Japan as a diplomatic envoy, met with Tokugawa Ieyasu, and through determined negotiations,

successfully recovered the stolen relic and brought it back to Korea.

But after returning, he faced a difficult concern.

“If Japanese invaders ever attack again through the southern coast, Tongdosa could once

more fall into danger. This time, the relic should be enshrined deep within the rugged mountains
of Geumgangsan.”

With that decision, Samyeongdang Yujeong chose Geonbongsa Temple as the permanent sanctuary

for the Buddha’s sacred tooth relic.

And thus, the relic came to rest within the temple’s sacred Jeokmyeolbogung Hall.

“The Mysterious ‘Sipbaramil Stone Pillars’ Found Only at Geon
  bongsa Temple

As you cross the Neungpagyo Bridge and enter the main hall area of Geonbongsa Temple,

you will notice two strangely shaped stone pillars standing on either side of the path.

These are the temple’s mysterious “Sipbaramil Stone Pillars,” a unique cultural treasure found

nowhere else in Korea’s Buddhist temples.

If you look closely at the surface of the pillars, you can see vertically engraved symbols resembling

ancient codes or mysterious crop-circle patterns — equilateral triangles, crescent moons, circles,

boat-like shapes, and many other geometric forms.

These symbols visually represent the Ten Paramitas — the ten essential practices of Mahayana

Buddhism:

  • generosity,
  • discipline,
  • patience,
  • diligence,
  • meditation,
  • wisdom,
  • skillful means,
  • vows,
  • spiritual power,
  • and ultimate knowledge.

In a way, the pillars can be seen as a kind of “visual educational textbook” carved in stone.

Perhaps they were created out of compassionate consideration by Buddhist monks, so that even

ordinary people who could not read would look upon these symbolic images and intuitively realize:

“Ah… this is how I should cultivate my mind and spirit.”

Rather than simple stone carvings, they may have been an ancient form of spiritual media art

designed to teach enlightenment through images rather than words.

“A Heartbreaking Modern History, and the Thousand-Year Flame
  Rising Once Again”

During the Joseon Dynasty, Geonbongsa Temple possessed tremendous prestige.

It was so highly revered that even King Sejo of Joseon personally visited the temple and designated

it as a royal prayer sanctuary, known as a “Wondang (願堂).”

The temple was once so prosperous that all the land and even the salt fields within a radius of

approximately four kilometers belonged to it.

Later, during the Japanese occupation of Korea, the great monk and independence activist Han

Yong-un — better known by his pen name “Manhae” — stayed at the temple, transforming it into

an important center for national education and the Korean independence movement.

In many ways, it became a spiritual heart of Korean Buddhism during one of the nation’s darkest

periods.

But tragedy struck in 1950 with the outbreak of the Korean War.

The once magnificent temple complex was reduced to ashes almost overnight. During the fierce

Battle of Geonbongsan, which continued for nearly two years, thousands of temple buildings were

completely destroyed by fire.

Miraculously, only a single structure survived — the temple gate known as the “Bulimun Gate

After the war, further hardship followed. Because the temple was located north of the Civilian

Control Line (CCL), it became an isolated and “forgotten temple” inaccessible to ordinary civilians,

visited only by soldiers for many years.

Yet the resilient spirit of this thousand-year-old temple never faded.

Finally, in 1989, public access was reopened, and beginning in 1994, major structures such as the

main hall, the Jeokmyeolbogung Hall, and the Neungpagyo Bridge were gradually restored.

Today, Geonbongsa Temple is once again reclaiming the majestic and serene dignity of a great

ancient temple — a truly fortunate revival after so much sorrow and destruction.
