On Days When You Feel Empty-Handed:
The Cintāmaṇi Hand Mantra That Awakens the Treasure Within
There are times in life when, no matter how hard we try, it feels as though nothing remains in our hands.
Our bank balance keeps shrinking, unexpected medical bills and living expenses arise, and we find
ourselves worrying about the future of our children and family.
When we were young, we believed that if we worked hard, everything would gradually improve.
But as we grow older and experience more of life, we come to realize that some problems cannot be solved
by effort alone.
At such times, two thoughts often arise in the heart.
“Why am I so lacking in good fortune?”
“How wonderful it would be if unexpected good luck came my way.”
In the first of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva’s hands that we will encounter today rests a precious jewel
symbolizing the earnest wishes of people who feel this way.
It is called the Cintāmaṇi Hand, the hand that holds the wish-fulfilling jewel.
However, the Cintāmaṇi held by Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva does not simply mean a magical jewel that
causes money to pour down from the sky.
The ability to recognize the blessings we already have, the wisdom to distinguish greed from genuine need,
the courage to rise again in difficult times, and the heart that forms wholesome relationships with good
people can all become forms of the Cintāmaṇi jewel.
Today, we will encounter the Cintāmaṇi Hand, the first among Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva’s forty-two
hands.
Today’s Hand of Avalokiteshvara
The First Hand: The Cintāmaṇi Hand
The term “Cintāmaṇi” is composed of three Chinese characters.
如意 means “to be fulfilled according to one’s wish,”
寶 means “precious treasure,”
and 珠 means “a round jewel.”
Taken literally, Cintāmaṇi refers to a precious jewel that fulfills one’s wishes.
In Buddhist and East Asian traditions, the wish-fulfilling jewel has long been described as a treasure capable
of granting desires.
The old tale that a dragon ascends to heaven after obtaining the wish-fulfilling jewel also comes from this
tradition.
However, in Buddhism, the meaning of the Cintāmaṇi jewel goes much deeper.
It does not simply symbolize receiving everything one desires in abundance.
Rather, it represents the precious wisdom that enables us to discern what is truly beneficial for both
ourselves and others.
Among the countless hands of the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva,
a number of especially significant hands are traditionally presented together with their corresponding mantras.
This system is commonly known as the Forty-Two Hand Mantras of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva.
In Korea, the Five Great Mantras (Odae Jineon), published during the Joseon Dynasty, also preserved the
Cintāmaṇi Hand along with various mudrās and mantras.
Why Is the Cintāmaṇi Hand the First?
It feels deeply symbolic that the first among the Forty-Two Hand Mantras is the Cintāmaṇi Hand.
Most people do not begin praying because they are seeking some lofty state of enlightenment from the very
beginning.
They pray because they are ill, because money is scarce, because they are worried about their family, or
because the road ahead feels uncertain.
“Buddha, please help me escape this hardship.”
“Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, please keep my family safe.”
“Please let this one matter turn out well.”
Such prayers are a natural expression of the human heart.
We cannot speak only of enlightenment to someone who is hungry, nor can we simply tell a sick person to
remain calm.
The compassion of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva does not turn away from the real suffering people face in
daily life.
However, Avalokiteshvara does not merely place whatever we desire directly into our hands.
Rather, I believe the Bodhisattva also guides us to develop the wisdom and character needed to handle
those blessings and use them rightly.
Some people gain wealth, yet lose everything because greed drives them to seek even more.
Some rise to positions of power, yet lose those around them because of pride.
Others meet precious people, yet fail to appreciate them and eventually destroy the relationship.
Therefore, the first thing we should seek in the practice of the Cintāmaṇi Hand is not simply great wealth
or unexpected good fortune.
“May I become a person who can use my blessings wisely when they are given to me.”
This is one of the most important attitudes to hold when praying with the Cintāmaṇi Hand.
The Story of a Poor Old Man and the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel
Long ago, there lived a poor old man in a small mountain village.
All his life, he had supported his wife and children by gathering firewood and selling it. But as he grew old and
became ill, it became increasingly difficult for him to climb the mountain.
One winter day, the old man was carrying the last bundle of firewood he had left to the market when he
discovered a small bird trembling in the snow.
He placed the bird inside his coat and warmed it against his chest.
Then, to his amazement, the bird began to shine with a dazzling light and transformed into a young attendant
dressed in white.
The young attendant handed the old man a small jewel and said,
“This jewel will grant whatever you desire. However, you may make only three wishes.”
The old man returned home filled with joy.
He began to wonder what he should wish for first.
“Should I ask for a storehouse filled with gold and silver treasures?”
But after a moment, he thought,
“If I suddenly become very wealthy, thieves may come, and my children may fight over the inheritance.”
So the old man did not make a wish.
The next day, he considered asking for a large storehouse filled with rice.
Then he remembered that many people in the village were starving.
“If only my own storehouse is full, what will happen to my hungry neighbors?”
That day, once again, he did not make a wish.
On the third night, the old man held the jewel carefully in both hands and prayed in silence.
“Please grant me the wisdom to understand what I truly need. Teach me to be grateful even when I have
little, and help me share with my neighbors whatever I receive.”
At that moment, the jewel turned into a brilliant light and entered the old man’s heart.
From the following day onward, gold and silver treasures did not suddenly pour into his house.
However, the old man began to understand which crops would grow best in his small field.
He bought and sold goods honestly, and he shared food with neighbors who were in need.
The villagers came to trust him, and whenever something good happened, they gladly helped one another.
A few years later, the old man’s house had become the warmest home in the village, filled with more laughter
than any other.
One day, the villagers asked him,
“Where is the jewel that was said to grant wishes?”
The old man placed his hand over his heart and smiled.
“When I learned to value what I already had and began to care about the hardships of others, the jewel
had already entered my heart.”
The Cintāmaṇi jewel is not a treasure that endlessly satisfies desire.
It is the light within the heart that helps us choose the right wish.
The Hand Gesture of the Cintāmaṇi Hand
In depictions of the Cintāmaṇi Hand, Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva is shown holding a round precious jewel
upon the hand.
The exact position of the hands and the shape of the jewel may vary slightly depending on the painting,
temple artwork, or tradition.
In some images, one hand supports the jewel while the other gently surrounds and protects it.
In other images, both hands are brought together near the chest, respectfully holding the precious jewel.
The palms may face upward or tilt slightly inward.
The five fingers are not clenched tightly, but are curved softly and naturally.
A round, brightly shining jewel rests upon the fingers.
The jewel is sometimes surrounded by a golden or white radiance.
This is not the hand of someone gripping a treasure tightly in order to keep it for themselves.
Rather, it is an open and peaceful hand, as though offering the jewel freely to all.
From this image, we can discover an important teaching.
The more tightly we cling to blessings, the smaller they become.
The more we share them, the greater they grow.
Wealth, too, can become a source of anxiety and conflict when it is merely hoarded.
But when it is used wisely, it can become an instrument of compassion—protecting one’s family and helping
neighbors in need.
The Mantra of the First Hand: The Cintāmaṇi Hand
Korean Recitation
“Om Baara Badari Hum Batak”
Depending on the source and the chanting tradition of a particular temple, the Korean transliteration may vary
slightly, appearing as “Baara,” “Bajara,” “Badari,” or “Badara.”
In some traditions, the Cintāmaṇi Hand Mantra is recited when praying for material abundance and a peaceful,
stable life.
Rather than trying to translate each syllable as though it were an ordinary sentence, it is better to understand
a mantra as a spiritual practice in which we respectfully repeat its sacred sounds and gather the mind into
one-pointed concentration.
There is no need to feel burdened by the idea that spiritual merit arises only when every syllable is pronounced
perfectly.
We should make a sincere effort to learn the recitation as accurately as possible, but what matters even more is
a genuine heart and a wholesome intention.
When Is a Good Time to Recite the Cintāmaṇi Hand Mantra?
The Cintāmaṇi Hand Mantra may be recited with focused attention in situations such as these:
When you feel anxious about living expenses or financial difficulties,
when the way forward seems unclear in business or at work,
when you are facing an important contract or decision,
when you wish to calm greed and attachment to money,
when you pray for stability and peace in your family’s daily life,
or when you wish to use the wealth you already have in a wise and wholesome way.
However, the purpose of reciting this mantra should not be to gain more money than others or to benefit yourself
by causing harm or loss to someone else.
Buddhist prayer is not a spell for fulfilling every personal desire without question.
It is a practice of seeking a path that brings benefit to both ourselves and others.
Those reciting this mantra for the first time may begin by chanting it reverently 7 or 21 times.
Today’s Meditation Questions
Close your eyes for a moment and ask yourself:
What do I most deeply long for right now?
Do I truly want money itself, or do I want the stability and peace that money may bring?
If my wish comes true, with whom would I like to share that blessing?
What habit within me should I correct before my wish is fulfilled?
What treasures are already beside me, yet have become so familiar that I take them for granted?
Family, health, a home, friends, life experience, and even a warm meal can all be treasures whose true
value we recognize only after they are gone.
For today, take a little time to look slowly and gratefully at what you already have.
Today’s Prayer of Aspiration
“Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva,
Do not let me forget gratitude
because I feel that what I have is not enough.
When I seek wealth, keep me from falling into greed.
When I pursue benefit, keep me from causing harm to others.
Help me cultivate an honest and diligent heart
rather than a desire to gain things easily.
When I stand before an important decision,
grant me the wisdom not to act in haste.
May the lives of my family and me become stable and peaceful.
Grant me a generous heart
so that I may share the blessings I receive with my neighbors.
Help me discover the Cintāmaṇi jewel
that already exists within my heart,
and by its light,
guide me to walk rightly
through dark and difficult paths.”
Today’s Mindset
The Cintāmaṇi jewel is not a gem that fulfills every desire.
It is the light of wisdom that reveals what we truly need.
“I am not empty-handed. Within me are the wisdom and compassion to begin again.”

Today’s Dedication of Merit
“I will not hold the small merit gained from reciting the Cintāmaṇi Hand Mantra today for my own happiness
alone.
May those who cannot sleep because of financial hardship receive the help they need and meet supportive
people.
May those suffering from illness receive proper treatment and the strength to endure.
May a new path open for those who have fallen into despair because of debt and worry.
May those who possess much yet remain unsatisfied awaken to gratitude and the joy of sharing.
May the small peace I have found today be shared with my family, my neighbors, and all living beings.
Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva.
Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva.
Homage to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva.”
