어제 TV 에서 라스베거스 카지노에 대한 영상을 보니, 2002년 8월 7일 LA 로 출장을
떠났던 때가 생각이 났다. 운항관리사는 법으로 일년에 한번은 자기가 계획한 비행항로
에 어떤 문제가 있는지 가장과 함께 조종석에 탑승하여 Route Familiarization(관숙비행)
을 실시하여야 하기 때문이다.
Yesterday I watched a TV program about casinos in Las Vegas, and it reminded me
of the business trip I took to LA on August 7, 2002. By law, a flight dispatcher must
once a year sit in the cockpit with the captain on a route he has planned and conduct
a Route Familiarization flight, in order to check for any problems along the route.
당분간 미국 갈 일이 없으라라 생각하고 여권과 비자를 잊고 살았는데 찾아보니 다행히
만기일이 몇 년 더 남아 있었다. 출장기간은 2박3일 이니 도착해서 하루 자고 다시 돌아
와야하기 때문에 다른일은 생각도 할 수 없는 빠듯한 일정이었다.
Thinking I wouldn’t be going to the U.S. for a while, I had practically forgotten about
my passport and visa, but when I looked for them, I was relieved to find that they
were still valid for a few more years.
The business trip was scheduled for three days and two nights, so I would arrive,
spend just one night there, and then have to come right back, leaving no room to
even think about doing anything else.
7일 오후 1500시에 출발하는 KE017 편에 탑승하여 2층 조정석에 들어가니 기장과
부기장은 비행계획서를 점검하고 있었다. 로스앤젤레스까지 비행시간은 10시간 48
분이고 목적지 기상과 대체공항인 라스베가스 공항의 날씨는 모두 양호하였고 기온
도 섭씨 22도로 쾌적한 날씨였다.
On the 7th, I boarded flight KE017, departing at 1500, and entered the upper-deck
cockpit, where the captain and first officer were checking the flight plan.
The flight time to Los Angeles was 10 hours and 48 minutes, and the weather at
our destination and at our alternate, Las Vegas Airport, was both good, with a
comfortable temperature of 22 degrees Celsius.
대체공항이라 함은 로스앤젤레스 공항의 날씨가 나빠져 착륙이 불가능 하게 되면 주변
에 있는 공항 중 적절한 공항을 선정하여 착륙하여야 하는데 되는데 오늘의 대체공항
이 라스베가스 공항이라는 사실에 나의 미국일정 계획이 완료되는 순간이었다.
An alternate airport is one that is selected from among suitable nearby airports, to be
used for landing if the weather at Los Angeles Airport deteriorates to the point that
landing becomes impossible.
The moment I learned that today’s alternate airport was Las Vegas, my plan for my
U.S. schedule was complete.
한국시간으로 오후 19시가 되자 창밖으로 해가 지는 것이 보였다. 그러나 4시간 30분 만
인 23시 20분이 되자 다시 태양이 떠오르는 것이 아닌가!. 밤 11시 30분 한밤중에 태양을
볼 수 있다는 게 새삼 묘미가 있다.
At 19:00 Korea time, I could see the sun setting outside the window. But after just four
and a half hours, at 23:20, the sun rose again! There is something uniquely fascinating
about being able to see the sun in the middle of the night at 11:30 p.m.
그러기에 미국으로 갈때는 과거로의 여행이 되고 한국으로 올때는 미래로의 여행이 되는
것이다. 즉 한국에서 7일 오후 15시에 떠났지만 목적지인 LA에 도착해 보면 7일 오전 10
시 30분이니 11시간 가까이 여행을 하고서도 출발한 시간 보다도 오히려 4시간 30분을
여행을 하면서 꺼꾸로 벌었으니 이것이 다 날짜변경선의 마술이 아니겠는가?
That is why flying to the United States becomes a journey into the past, and flying back
to Korea becomes a journey into the future.
In other words, although we departed Korea at 15:00 on the 7th, when we arrived at
our destination, LA, it was 10:30 a.m. on the 7th.
After traveling for nearly 11 hours, we had effectively gained 4 hours and 30 minutes
compared to our departure time. Isn’t this all the magic of the International Date Line?
도착하니 마침 그곳에 주재하는 이상기씨가 마중을 나와있다. "어떻게 하실래요?
무슨계획이라도 있어요?" 이미 이번기회에 라스베가스를 방문하리라 생각하였으므로
자동차 렌트를 하기로 하고 'Hertz' 로 향했다.
When I arrived, Mr. Lee Sang-gi, who was stationed there, happened to be waiting to
meet me. “What would you like to do? Do you have any plans?” he asked.
I had already decided to take this opportunity to visit Las Vegas, so we decided to rent
a car and headed to Hertz.
중형차를 요구하니 '마즈다 푸로페지' 흰색차를 권하는데 24시간에 보험까지 71불 정도
로 예상보다 훨씬 비싸다. "이럴줄 알았다면 미리 한국에서 인터넷으로 여러 렌트카 회사
도 알아보고 예약을 하고 오는 것인데" 하는 생각도 들었지만 모처럼 미국의 고속도로를
달려본다는 생각에 계약을 하고 라스베가스로 향했다.
When I asked for a mid-size car, they recommended a white Mazda Protegé, which,
including insurance for 24 hours, came to about 71 dollars—much more expensive than
I had expected.
I couldn’t help thinking, “If I’d known it would be like this, I would have checked different
rental companies online in Korea and made a reservation in advance.”
Still, the thought of finally driving on an American highway made me sign the contract
and set off for Las Vegas.
마일리지를 보니 9000 마일 정도로 비교적 새것이었고 지도를 펼쳐보니 E105 - N605 -
E10 - N15 4개의 고속도로를 달려야 하였다.
거리는 대략 300마일(약 480Km) 이니 60마일로 달리면 5시간이면 도착하리라 생각하고
하이웨이로 들어섰다.
The odometer showed about 9,000 miles, so it was relatively new. Opening the map,
I saw that we would have to take four highways: E105 – N605 – E10 – N15.
The distance was roughly 300 miles (about 480 km), so I figured that if we drove at
60 miles per hour, we’d arrive in about five hours, and we entered the highway.
고속도로 주위로 보이는 것은 메마른 황토 민둥산에 서부영화에서 볼수 있는 덤불과 만져
보지 않아도 알 수 있는 먼지만 풀풀나는 거칠고 메마른 땅이었지만 끝을 알 수 없을 정도
로 넓은 대지 였다.
All we could see along the freeway were bare, dry, ocher-colored hills, tumbleweeds like
in Western movies, and rough, arid land that you could tell was dusty just by looking at it
—yet it was a vast plain that seemed to stretch on without end.
한국사람 아니랄까봐 이정도 땅이면 한국의 모든 아파트를 다 이곳으로 옮겨와도 충분할
정도의 너른 땅.. 그러나 몇시간을 달려가도 사람구경은 커녕 다람쥐 한마리 볼 수 없었다.
When I saw that vast stretch of land, I couldn’t help thinking, like a typical Korean, that
it was big enough to move all the apartments in Korea over here and still have room to
spare. Yet after driving for hours, we didn’t see a single person—let alone even one
squirrel.
"드르륵 드르륵" 하는 바퀴소리에 정신을 차려보니 다른 차도로 들어서는 것이 아닌가?"
지루하고 밤낮이 바뀌는 바람에 잠시 졸았던 것 같다. 안되겠다 싶어 'Gas Station'을 찾아
커피라도 사 마시고 떠나야 겠다는 생각에 가까운 Food Mart 로 들어섰다.
“Dr-r-rk, dr-r-rk…” The rattling sound of the wheels snapped me back to my senses,
and I realized I was drifting into another lane. I must have dozed off for a moment
out of boredom and jet lag. Deciding this wouldn’t do, I went looking for a gas station
to at least grab some coffee, and pulled into a nearby food mart.
햄버거세트를 시키다 보니 39센트만 더 주면 콜라와 감자튀김을 배로 주는 Big Special
이 있어 그것을 시켰더니 이건 정말 콜라컵이 얼마나 큰지 머리에 쓰면 모자로도 사용할
수 있겠고 목욕은 몰라도 나 한사람 세수정도는 충분히 할 정도 였다.
While ordering a hamburger set, I saw there was a Big Special: for just 39 cents more,
they would double the cola and fries. I ordered it, and the cola cup was so huge that
I could probably have worn it on my head as a hat, and while maybe not enough to
take a bath, it was certainly enough water for me to wash my face.
미국에서도 처음 보는 Large Size 로 원래 한국인인 나에게는 레귤러 사이즈도 벅찬데
결국 처치 곤란으로 3분의 2는 버려야 했다. 다시는 스페시얼을 좋아하지 않으리라 생각
하면서 시동을 걸었다.
It was the largest size I’d ever seen, even in the U.S., and for a Korean like me,
the regular size was already more than enough. In the end, I couldn’t finish it and
had to throw away about two-thirds. I thought to myself that I would never be tempted
by a “special” again, and started the car.
그런데 이게 왠일인가? 시동이 걸리지 않는다. 뉴욕도 아니데 내가 미국에 다시 온 것이
네바다 주 까지 소문이 났단 말 인가? 한동안 난감해 있던 나는 'Hertz' 로 전화하려고
공중전화를 찾으니 마침 고장이었다. "어허! 드라마를 또 쓰게 되려나?..." 예전 뉴욕생활
의 악몽이 되살아 나는 듯 하였다.
But what was this? The engine wouldn’t start. This wasn’t even New York—had word
somehow spread all the way to Nevada that I’d come back to America?
Feeling at a loss, I went to look for a pay phone to call Hertz, only to find that it was out
of order. “Uh-oh, am I about to write another drama script…?”
It felt like the nightmare of my old New York days was coming back.
날씨가 더욱 더워 진 것 같았고 아까 쓰레기 통에 버린 콜라가 생각이 났다. "그래! 뉴욕
에서도 살아 돌아 왔는데 이런일 쯤이야.." 하면서 엑서레이터를 끝까지 밟고 서너번
시동을 걸어보니 "크르르륵 크르르륵" 하다가 마침내 "왕" 하면서 시동이 걸린다.
The weather seemed to have gotten even hotter, and I couldn’t stop thinking about
the cola I had just thrown in the trash. “Come on, I survived New York—this is nothing,”
I told myself. I floored the accelerator and tried starting the car three or four times.
After a few “kr-r-rk, kr-r-rk” sounds, it finally roared to life with a “vroom.”
안도의 쉼과 동시에 다시 LA 로 돌아가서 편히 있다 돌아갈까 하는 생각도 들었지만 이곳
까지 와서 남들이 그렇게 가고싶어하는 라스베가스를 못본다면 너무 억울할 것 같아 가던
길을 계속했다.
Relieved, I briefly considered just going back to L.A. and resting there in comfort, but
after coming all this way, it felt far too unfair to miss out on seeing Las Vegas, a place
so many people dream of visiting. So I continued on my way.
그러나 우려했던 일 대신에 다른 상황이 돌아오는 길에 벌어졌으니..
아무튼 미국의 나에 대한 환영인사는 변함 없었다.
However, instead of the trouble I had feared, a different incident awaited me—this time
on the way back. In any case, America’s “welcome greeting” to me hadn’t changed.
라스베가스(Las Vegas) 는 스페인 말로 초원(Meadow)이란 말이다. 면적은 서울의 3분의 1
정도 되며 년간 250억 달러(1999년 기준) 이상의 관광수입을 올리는 세계 최대의 유흥도시
이고 한국이 같은 기간 벌어드린 관광수입의 4배가 넘는 규모이니 엄청난 규모이다.
Las Vegas is Spanish for “the Meadows.” Its area is about one-third the size of Seoul,
and it is the world’s largest entertainment city, generating more than 25 billion dollars
a year in tourism revenue (as of 1999)—over four times what Korea earned from tourism
in the same period, an astonishing figure.
20세기 초 거주민 25명이 현재는 인구 130만명의 거대한 도시로 탈바꿈했으니 사막 한
가운데의 기적이라 불러도 좋으리라.
In the early 20th century, it had only 25 residents, but today it has transformed into a
huge city of 1.3 million people. It would not be an exaggeration to call it a miracle
in the middle of the desert.
한참을 달렸을까.. 문득 스쳐가는 도로 표지판에 고스트 타운(Ghost Town) 이란 글자가
보인다. '유령마을' 이란 뜻인데 이곳에서도 '전설의 고향'이 있나?
After I had been driving for quite a while, a road sign flashed past with the words
“Ghost Town” on it.
“A ‘ghost town’…? Do they have their own version of ‘Tales of the Unusual’ out here
too?” I wondered.
나중에 알아보니 1848년 캘리포니아 한농가에서 발견되 금이 계기가 되어 너도 나도 금을
캐러 캘리포니아로 일년 만에 십만명 이상이 몰려들었고 1850년 미국의 한 주로 태어나게
되었고 인접한 네바다와 콜로라도 주도 금,은 구리의 발견과 함께 주로 발전하게 되었다.
Later I found out that in 1848, when gold was discovered on a farm in California,
it triggered a gold rush, and in just one year more than 100,000 people flocked there to
mine gold.
In 1850, California became a U.S. state, and the neighboring states of Nevada and
Colorado also developed largely thanks to the discovery of gold, silver, and copper.
그당시 골드러쉬때 모여든 사람들이 금을 다캐고 집이며 가구들을 다 남겨둔채 마을을 떠나
버려 유령이 나올 것 같은 마을이 되었다 하며 내가 드라이브한 이스트 15번 고속도로에서
'매드맥스' 영화가 촬영되었다 한다.
When the gold rush ended and the miners had extracted all the gold, they left town,
abandoning their homes and furniture, turning the area into a place that looked haunted
—hence the “ghost towns.” I also learned that the movie “Mad Max” was filmed on
Interstate 15 East, the very highway I was driving on.
왼편으로 악어가 길게 누워있는 듯한 산을 지나 한참을 더 달려가니 도로 양쪽으로 호텔
및 모텔 광고판이 나타나기 시작한다. 문득 데저트 인(Desert Inn) 이란 호텔 광고가 눈에
띈다.
Passing a mountain on my left that looked like a crocodile sprawled out on the ground,
I drove on for some time until hotel and motel billboards began to appear on both sides
of the road. One advertisement in particular caught my eye: a hotel called “Desert Inn.”
미국 최대 부호인 '하워드 휴즈'가 이호텔에 묵었다가 방을 비워달라는 호텔측의 말에
불끈하여 아예 그 호텔을 통재로 사버렸다는 그 '데져트 인' 인지도 모르겠다.
I wondered if it might be the very Desert Inn where the richest man in America,
Howard Hughes, once stayed, and when the hotel asked him to vacate his room, he
became so irritated that he simply bought the entire hotel.
라스베가스에서는 이혼과 재혼이 자유롭다. 그래서 올때는 아내와 같이 놀러와서 갈때
는 딴여자와 재혼하여 살수 있는 색다른 법이 존재하기 때문이다.
In Las Vegas, divorce and remarriage are easy and common. There is even a peculiar
legal setup that allows someone to come with their wife for a vacation and then leave
living with another woman as his new wife.
마침내 라스베가스에 도착하여 시내에 도달하니 '미라지'호텔, 객실이 4000개가 넘는다
는 '엑스칼리버'호텔, '트레져 아일런드' 호텔은 말 그대로 건물 자체가 보석으로 치장된
것 같고 자유의 여신상의 모형 까지 설치된 '뉴욕 뉴욕'호텔, '알라딘' 호텔등이 번쩍이는
네온사인으로 현란하다.
At last, I arrived in Las Vegas and reached the downtown area. The Mirage Hotel,
the Excalibur Hotel with its more than 4,000 rooms, and the Treasure Island Hotel,
whose entire building looked as if it were encrusted with jewels, all glittered with neon
lights. There was even the New York-New York Hotel, complete with a replica of the
Statue of Liberty, and the Aladdin Hotel—everywhere, dazzling lights.
현재 라스베가스에 있는 호텔의 객실수는 13만개 정도 라는데 이는 대한민국의 모든
호텔의 객실 수의 2배에 가까운 수치라하니 과연 세계적인 환락의 도시임에 틀림없다.
They say there are about 130,000 hotel rooms in Las Vegas alone—nearly double the
total number of hotel rooms in all of South Korea.
It is surely a world-class city of pleasure.
겉모양만 봐도 숙박비가 만만치 않으리란 생각에 여행자 안내소(Tourist Bureau)를 찾아
들어갔다. 안경을 쓴 할머니 한분이 반갑게 맞아준다. 카지노 시설을 갖춘 저렴한 호텔
을 소개해 달라고 하자 몇군데를 알아보더니 '임페리얼 팰리스(Imperial Palace)'호텔을
소개해 주면서 원하면 예약까지 해주겠단다.
Judging from the exteriors, I figured the room rates wouldn’t be cheap, so I went looking
for a Tourist Bureau. An elderly lady with glasses greeted me warmly.
When I asked her to recommend an inexpensive hotel with a casino, she checked a few
places and then suggested the Imperial Palace Hotel, saying she could even make the
reservation for me if I wanted.
황궁호텔이라면 엄청나게 비쌀 것 같은데.. 가격을 물어보니 $56.61 이란다.
더 싼곳을 물어보니 카지노 시설이 없는 모텔은 $29,99 이지만 이왕 길을 나선 것 몸이라
도 편하자는 생각에 그 호텔에 묵기로 했다.
The name “Imperial Palace” made it sound like it would be extremely expensive, but
when I asked the price, she said it was $56.61. I asked if there was anything cheaper,
and she told me there were motels without casino facilities for $29.99.
But since I had come all this way, I decided I might as well be comfortable and chose
to stay at the hotel.
주차를 하고 프론트 데스크를 찾으니 건물 내부 전체가 온갖 카지노 시설로 가득차서 동서
남북을 구별할 수 없을 정도 였다.
After parking, I went to look for the front desk, but the entire interior of the building was
so packed with casino facilities that it was impossible to tell east from west or north
from south.
여기 저기서 '따르릉' 하는 소리와 함께 기계위의 불이 번쩍이며 '챠르륵' 거리며 한없이
떨어지는 동전 소리에 함성을 지르는 할머니 옆으로 다가서니 $1을 넣었는데 $3,000 이
담청되었다고 기쁨을 감출줄 모른다.
All around me I heard the ringing of machines and saw lights flashing on top of them,
while the clatter of coins pouring out went on endlessly—“charr-rrk, charr-rrk”—and
people shouted with excitement.
I walked up to an elderly woman cheering beside a slot machine; she had put in just
one dollar and hit a $3,000 jackpot, and she could hardly contain her joy.
예전에 한 호텔의 '신디'라는 종업원이 $15을 베팅하여 3400만 달러를 땄다니 꿈만 잘
꾸면 백만장자되기도 어렵지 않다.
They say that some time ago, a hotel employee named Cindy once bet 15 dollars and
won 34 million dollars. If you dream well, it doesn’t seem so hard to become a millionaire.
그러나 이렇게 돈을 번 사람의 뒷끝은 별로 좋지 않아서 원인 모르게 죽음을 맞이한 경우
가 많으며 몇 천만 달러를 한꺼번에 지급하는 경우는 거의 없으며 수십년에 걸쳐서 몇 십
만불씩 지급되는데 당사자가 사망하면 지급이 중단된다하니 돈벼락이 저승으로 인도하는
청첩장이 될 수도 있음을 유념해야 할 것이다.
However, the aftermath for people who win money like this is often not very good; many
end up dying under mysterious circumstances. In most cases, lump-sum payouts of tens
of millions of dollars are almost never made.
Instead, the money is paid out in installments of a few hundred thousand dollars over
several decades, and if the winner dies, the payments stop.
One should keep in mind that a windfall like that can turn into a wedding invitation that
leads you straight to the afterlife.
샤워를 마치고 게임장에 들어서니 작게는 5센트 부터 5불 까지 게임을 할 수 있는 기계가
있었다. 20불 이상은 하지 않으리라 생각하고 쿼러(25센트)로 20불을 바꿨다.
After taking a shower, I went down to the gaming floor and found machines where you
could play for as little as 5 cents up to 5 dollars. I decided I wouldn’t spend more than
20 dollars and exchanged that amount into quarters (25 cents).
여기저기 돌아다니다 비어있는 스롯머신 앞에 앉아 동전 하나를 넣고 버튼을 눌렀다.
기계의 창에 보니 25센트 동전 하나에 최대 3,000 개의 당첨이 가능하다니 동전 하나가
$750 이 될 수 있는 것 이다.
Wandering around, I sat down at an empty slot machine, put in one coin, and pressed
the button. According to the display, a single 25-cent coin could win up to 3,000 coins,
meaning that one coin could turn into 750 dollars.
2개도 나왔다가 20개도 나오고 비교적 장시간 동안 즐길 수 있었다. 애초부터 따려는
생각은 없었지만 사오십분 정도 지나자 투자금액의 4분의 3이 없어지고 수중에 4-5불
정도의 동전이 남게 되었다.
Sometimes I got 2 coins, sometimes 20; I was able to enjoy the game for a fairly long
time.
I hadn’t intended to win from the start, but after forty or fifty minutes, three-quarters of
my stake was gone, and I was left with only about 4–5 dollars in coins.
더이상 재미가 없어 동전 2개를 넣고 버튼을 누른채 어떤 게임을 할 까 생각하는데 뭐가
번쩍이며 '투투둑' 거리며 동전이 쏟아 지는데 전광판을 보니 300 이란 숫자가 들어 온다.
300개의 동전이 떨어지는데 그렇게 시간이 많이 걸리는 줄 미쳐 몰랐었다.
It wasn’t fun anymore, so I put in two more coins, pressed the button, and was thinking
about what game to try next when suddenly there was a flash, a rattling sound, and
coins started pouring out. I looked up at the display and saw the number 300. I had
never realized it took that long for 300 coins to fall out.
그러니까 50센트로 75불을 벌었으니 횡재를 한 셈이다. 그때 자리를 털고 일어나야 하는데
역시 피땀 없이 들어온 돈은 오래가지 못했다. "이거 정말 누구 탈렌트 처럼 내일 신문에
나오는 것 아냐?" 하는 말도 안되는 망상이 결국 100여불을 다 잃게 만들었다.
In other words, with 50 cents I had won 75 dollars—a nice little windfall. That should
have been the moment to get up and walk away, but, as expected, money that comes
without sweat doesn’t stay long.
Fantasies like “What if I end up in tomorrow’s newspaper like some TV celebrity?”—
completely absurd thoughts—ultimately led me to lose the entire 100 dollars.
