만복사저포기(부처와 윷놀이:Bet with Buddha)

한국 전통윷 및 윷판(Korean traditional yut and yutpan)

 

 

전라도 남원에 양생이 살고 있었는데, 일찍이 어버이를 잃은 데다

아직 장가도 들지 못했으므로 만복사의 동쪽에서 혼자 살았다.

Yangsaeng lived in Namwon, Jeollado.

He lost his parents at a young age and had not yet married,

so he lived alone to the east of Manboksa Temple.

 

방 밖에는 배나무 한 그루가 있었는데, 마치 봄이 되어 꽃이 활짝

피었다. 

There was a pear tree outside the room, and it was in full bloom 

as if it were spring.

 

그는 배나무를 바라보며 외로운 마음을 달래보려고 시를 읇었다.

He looked at the pear tree and recited poetry to soothe 

his lonely heart.

 

"한 그루 배꽃이 외로움을 달래 주지만

휘영청 달 밝은 밤은 홀로 보내기 괴로워라.

"A single pear blossom soothes loneliness, but
It's hard to spend a moonlit night alone.

 

젊은 이 몸 홀로 누운 호젓한 창가로
어느 집 고운 님이 퉁소를 불어 주네."

To the quiet window where my young body lies alone

Someone from a certain house, he plays the flute."

 

3월 어느날 만복사에서 등불을 밝히고 복을 비는 풍속이 있었는데,

남녀들이 모여들어 저마다 소원을 빌었다.

 

One day in March, there was a custom of lighting lanterns and

praying for good luck at Manboksa Temple, and men and women

 

gathered together and each made a wish.

 

날이 저물고 법회도 끝나자 사람들이 드물어지자 양생이 소매 속

에서 저포(윷)를 꺼내어 부처님 앞에다 던지면서 소원을 빌었다.

As the day went on and the Buddhist service ended and there

were fewer people, Yangsaeng took out a yut from his sleeve,

threw it in front of the Buddha, and made a wish.

 

"제가 오늘 부처님을 모시고 저포놀이(윷놀이)를 하여 볼까 합니다.

만약 제가 지면 부처님전에 공양을 올리겠습니다.

 

“I would like to play Jeoponori (Yutnori) with Buddha today.
If I lose, I will make an offering to the Buddha.

 

만약 부처님이 지시면 아름다운 여인을 얻어서 제 소원을 이루게

하여 주십시오."

 

“If the Buddha loses, please find a beautiful woman and make 

my wish come true.”

 

빌기를 마치고 곧 저포(윷)를 던지자, 양생이 이기게 되어 부처님

앞에 무릎은 꿇고 앉아서 말하였다.

 

As soon as he finished praying and threw the jeopo (yut), 

Yangsaeng won and knelt down in front of the Buddha and spoke.

 

"인연이 이미 정하여졌으니, 속이시면 안 됩니다."

 

“The relationship has already been decided, so you cannot cheat.”

 

그는 불상 뒤에 숨어서 그 약속에 이루어지기를 기다렸다.

 

He hid behind the Buddha statue and waited for the promise to 

come true.

 

얼마 뒤에 한 아름다운 아가씨가 들어오는데, 나이는 열대 여섯쯤

되어 보였다.

 

After a while, a beautiful young woman came in, looking to be 

about six or six years old.

 

머리를 두 갈래로 땋고 깨끗하게 차려 입었는데, 아름다운 얼굴과

고운 몸가짐이 마치 하늘의 선녀 같았다.

 

Her hair was braided into two braids and she was dressed neatly, 

and her beautiful face and graceful figure made her look like a 

heavenly fairy.

 

바라볼수록 마음을 설레게하는 자태였다.

 

The more he looked at her, the more his heart fluttered.

 

그 여인은 기름병을 가지고 와서 등잔에 기름을 따라 넣은 다음 향

을 꽂으며 세 번 절하고 꿇어앉아 슬피 탄식하였다.

 

The woman brought a flask of oil, poured oil into the lamp, 

put incense in it, bowed three times, knelt down, and lamented.

 

"인생이 박명하다지만, 부처님! 어찌 이럴 수가 있습니까?

 

“Life is dark, but Buddha! How can this be?

 

가을 달밤과 꽃 피는 봄날을 아픈 마음으로 헛되이 보내고,

뜬구름 흐르는 물과 더불어 무료하게 나날을 보냈습니다.

 

I spend the autumn moonlit nights and flowery spring days 

in vain with a painful heart, I spent my days bored with the 

flowing water.

 

쓸쓸한 골짜기에 외로이 머물면서 제 박명한 평생을 탄식하였고,

아름다운 밤을 혼자 지새우면서 짝 잃은 채란새의 외로운 춤을

슬퍼하였습니다.

 

As I stayed alone in the lonely valley, I lamented my dark life, 

and as I spent the beautiful night alone, I mourned the lonely 

dance of the wild bird that had lost its mate.

 

오직 부처님께 비오니 이 몸을 가엽게 여기시어 각별히 돌보아

주소서.

 

I only ask the Buddha to take pity on this body and take special 

care of it.

 

인간의 생은 태어나기 전부터 정해져 있으며 선악의 응보를 피할 수

없으니, 제가 타고난 운명에도 인연이 있을 것입니다.

 

Since human life is determined before birth and the retribution 

of good and evil cannot be avoided, the fate I was born with 

must also be related.

 

빨리 배필을 얻게 해주시길 간절히 비옵니다."

 

“I sincerely pray that I find a spouse quickly.”

 

양생은 불상 사이로 여인의 얼굴을 보고 마음을 걷잡을 수가 없어

갑자기 뛰쳐나가 말하였다.

 

When Yangsaeng saw the woman's face between the Buddha 

statues, he couldn't control his mind and suddenly ran out 

and said,

 

"조금 전에 글을 올린 것은 무슨 일 때문이고, 아가씨는 어떤 사람

이기에 혼자서 여기까지 왔습니까?"

 

“Why did you post something a little while ago, and what kind 

of person are you to come all the way here alone?”

 

"저도 또한 사람입니다. 대체 무슨 의심이라도 나시는지요?

당신께서는 다만 좋은 배필만 얻으면 되실 테니까, 이름을

묻거나 그렇게 당황하지 마십시오."

 

“I am also human. What on earth do you have any doubts about?
You just need to find a good partner, Don’t ask my name or be so

embarrassed.”

 

이렇게 두사람은 서로에게 이끌려 만복사 절의 빈방을 찾아가 

정을 나누었다.

 

In this way, the two people were drawn to each other and went to 

an empty room at Manboksa Temple and made love.

 

이윽고 밤이 깊어 달이 동산에 떠오르자 창살에 그림자가 비쳤다.

문득 발자국 소리가 들리자 여인이 물었다.

 

Eventually, the night fell, and as the moon rose over the garden, 

a shadow appeared on the grille.
The woman asked when she suddenly heard footsteps.

 

"밖에 누구냐? 시녀가 찾아온게 아니냐?" 

 

“Who is outside? Isn’t the maid visiting?”

 

"예. 접니다. 평소에는 아가씨가 문 밖에도 나가지 않으시고 서너

걸음도 걷지 않으셨는데, 어제 저녁에는 우연히 나가셨다가 어찌

이곳까지 오셨습니까?"

 

“Yes, it’s me. Usually, you don’t go out the door or even walk three 

or four steps, but last night you happened to go out and how did 

you come here?”

 

"오늘의 일은 우연이 아니다. 하느님이 도우시고 부처님이 돌보셔서,

고운 님을 맞이하여 백년해로를 하게 되었다.

 

“What happened today is not a coincidence. With the help of God 

and the care of the Buddha, we met lover and lived a 100-year life.

 

어버이께 여쭙지 못하고 시집가는 것은 비록 예법에 어그러졌지만,

서로 즐거이 맞이하게 된 것은 또한 평생의 기이한 인연이다.

너는 집으로 가서 앉을 자리와 술안주를 가지고 오너라."

 

Although it was against etiquette to get married without asking my

parents, the fact that you happily welcomed each other was also a

strange lifelong bond.
“You go home and bring a place to sit and a drink.”

 

시녀가 그 명령대로 가서 뜨락에 술자리를 베푸니, 시간은 벌써
새벽 2시 되었다.

The maid followed her orders and had a drinking party in the

garden, and it was already 2 o'clock.

 

시녀가 차려 놓은 방석과 술상은 무늬가 없이 깨끗하였으며,

술에서 풍기는 향내도 정녕 인간 세상의 솜씨는 아니었다.

 

The cushions and table set up by the maid were clean, without 

any patterns.
Even the scent emanating from the alcohol was not truly a skill

of the human world.

양생은 비록 의심나고 괴이하였지만, 여인의 이야기와 웃음소리가

맑고 고우며 얼굴과 몸가짐이 얌전하여, '틀림없이 귀한 집 아가씨가

한때의 마음을 잡지 못하여 담을 넘어 나왔구나' 생각하고는 더 이상

의심하지 않았다.

 

Although Yangsaeng was suspicious and strange, the woman's 

stories and laughter were clear and beautiful, and her face and 

demeanor were calm, so he thought, 'The lady of a noble family 

must have climbed over the wall because she couldn't get her 

mind for a while', and he didn't no longer doubted it. 

양생은 천생연분으로 생각하고 같이 살 것을 맹세하였다.

 

Yangsaeng thought they were a match made in heaven and 

vowed to live together.

 

"낭군께서 저를 멀리 버리지 않으신다면 끝까지 시중을 들겠습니다.

그렇지만 만약 제 소원을 들어주지 않으신다면 저는 영원히 자취를

감추겠습니다."

 

“If you don’t abandon me far away, I will serve you until the end.
But if you don't grant my wish, I will disappear forever.

 

양생이 이 말을 듣고 한편 놀라며 한편 고맙게 생각하여 대답하였다.

 

When Yangsaeng heard this, he was both surprised and grateful.

 

"어찌 당신의 말에 따르지 않겠소?"

 

“How could I not obey you?”

 

그러면서도 여인의 태도가 범상치 않았으므로, 양생은 유심히 행동

을 살펴보았다.

 

However, because the woman's attitude was unusual, Yangsaeng 

observed her behavior carefully.

 

이때 달이 서산에 걸리자 먼 마을에서는 닭이 울고 절의 종소리가

들려왔다. 먼동이 트려 하자 여인이 말하였다.

 

At this time, as the moon hung over the western mountain, a rooster

crowed and a temple bell could be heard from a distant village. 

As dawn was about to break, the woman spoke.

 

"얘야. 술자리를 거두어 집으로 돌아가거라."

 

“Dear maid. Lets stop drinking party and go home.”

 

시녀는 대답하자마자 없어졌는데, 간 곳을 알 수 없었다.

여인이 말하였다.

 

The maid disappeared as soon as she answered, and it was 

unknown where she had gone.
The woman said.

 

"인연이 이미 정해졌으니 낭군을 모시고 집으로 돌아가려 합니다."

 

“Now that our relationship has already been decided, I plan to return 

home with you.”

 

양생이 여인의 손을 잡고 마을을 지나가는데, 개는 울타리에서 짖고

사람들이 길에 다녔다. 그러나 길가던 사람들은 그가 여인과 함께

가는 것을 알지 못하고 말을 걸어왔다.

Yangsaeng was passing through the village holding a woman's hand, 

dogs were barking at the fence and people were walking on the

streets. However, people on the road did not know that he was going 

with a woman and started talking to him.

 

"양총각, 새벽부터 어디에 다녀오시오?"

 

“Bachelor Yang, where are you going so early in the morning?”

"어젯밤 만복사에서 취하여 누웠다가 이제 친구가 사는 마을을
찾아가는 길입니다."

“I got drunk at Manboksa Temple last night and am now on my way 
to visit the village where my friend lives.”

날이 새자 여인이 양생을 이끌고 깊은 숲을 헤치며 가는데,

이슬이 흠뻑 내려서 갈 길이 아득하였다. 

 

As day dawned, the woman led Yangsaeng through the deep forest.
The dew was falling so much that it was a long way to go.

 

"어찌 당신 거처하는 곳이 이렇게 험하오? " 라고 물으니

 

“How is it that the place you live in is so rough?” he asked.

 

"혼자 사는 여자의 거처가 원래 이렇답니다." 라고 대답했다.

 

“This is how a woman who lives alone usually lives.” She answered.

한 곳이 이르자 다북쑥이 들을 덮고 가시나무가 하늘에 치솟은
가운데 한 집이 있었는데, 작으면서도 아주 아름다웠다.

When we arrived at a place, among the fields covered with sagebrush 

and thorn trees rising to the sky, there was a house, small but very 

beautiful.

그는 여인이 이끄는 대로 따라 들어갔다.
방안에는 이부자리와 휘장이 잘 정돈되어 있었고

양생은 그곳에 사흘을 머물렀는데 즐거움이 평상시와 같았다.

 

He followed the woman's lead and went in.

The bedding and curtains in the room were neatly arranged.
Yangsaeng stayed there for three days and was as happy as usual.

시녀는 아름다우면서도 교활하지 않았고, 그릇은 깨끗하면서도

무늬가 없었다. 인간세상의 것이 아니라고 생각되었다.

The maid was beautiful but not cunning, and the dishes were clean 

but without pattern. It was thought that it did not belong to the 

human world.

 

그러나 여인의 은근한 정에 마음이 끌려 다시는 그런 생각을

하지 않았다. 얼마 뒤에 여인이 양생에게 말하였다.

However, he was attracted to the woman's secret affection and 

never had such strange thoughts again. 
After some time, the woman spoke to Yangsaeng.

 

"이곳의 사흘은 인간세상의 삼 년과 같습니다.

낭군은 이제 집으로 돌아가셔서 생업을 돌보십시오."

“Three days here are like three years in the human world.
“You should now go home and take care of your livelihood.”

 

드디어 이별의 잔치를 베풀며 헤어지게 되자,

양생이 서글프게 말하였다.

When they finally parted ways with a farewell party, Yangsaeng 

spoke sadly.

"어찌 이별이 이다지도 빠르오?"

“How can the breakup be so quick?”

"우린 다시 만나 평생의 소원을 풀게 될 것입니다.

오늘 이 누추한 곳에 오시게 된 것도 반드시 묵은 인연이 있었기
때문입니다. 이웃 친척들을 만나 보시는 게 어떻습니까?"

“We will meet again and fulfill our lifelong wish.

The reason you came to this humble place today was because of 

an old relationship. “How about meeting my relatives?”

 

양생이 '좋다'고 하자 곧 시녀에게 시켜, 사방의 이웃에게 알려

모이게 하였다.
When he said 'good’, she immediately ordered her maid to tell it

to her neighbors everywhere and gathered together

첫째는 정씨이고 둘째는 오씨이며, 셋째는 김씨이고 넷째는 류씨인데,
모두 문벌이 높은 귀족집의 따님들이었다.

The first is the Jeong clan, the second is the Oh clan, the third is the 

Kim clan, and the fourth is the Ryu clan.
They were all daughters of high-ranking noble families.

 

이 여인과는 한 마을에 사는 친척 처녀들이었다.

성품이 온화하며 풍운이 보통 아니었고, 총명하고 글도 또한 많이
알아 시를 잘 지었다.
These women were related girls who lived in the same village.
He had a gentle nature and was not an ordinary person, but she was

intelligent and knew a lot about writing, so he wrote poetry well.

이들이 모두 작별의 시를 지어 양생을 전송하였다.
They all wrote farewell poems and sent them to Yangsaeng.

 

술이 다하여 헤어지게 되자, 여인이 은그릇 하나를 내어 양생에게

주면서 말하였다.
When the wine ran out and they parted ways, the woman took out 

a silver bowl and gave it to Yangsaeng, saying:

"내일 저희 부모님께서 저를 위하여 보련사에서 음식을 베풀 것입니다.

당신이 저를 버리지 않으시겠다면, 보련사로 가는 길에서 기다리고

있다가 저와 함께 절로 가서 부모님을 뵙는 것이 어떻겠습니까?"

“Tomorrow, my parents will prepare food for me at Boryeon Temple.
“If you don’t want to abandon me, how about you wait on the road to

Boryeon Temple and then go to the temple with me to see my parents?”

양생이 대답하였다. "그러겠소."

Yangsaeng answered. “I will.”

이튿날 양생은 여인의 말대로 은그릇 하나를 들고 보련사로 가는 길가

에서 기다리고 있었는데, 정말 어떤 귀족의 집안에서 딸자식의 대상을

치르려고 수레와 말을 길에 늘어 세우고서 보련사로 올라가는 것이었다.

 

The next day, as the woman said, Yangsaeng was waiting on the road

to Boryeonsa Temple holding a silver bowl.

 

It was truly a noble family that held a ancestral rite for their daughter.

To prepare for the ceremony, they lined up the carts and horses on the 

road and went up to Boryeonsa Temple.

 

그러다가 길가에서 한 서생이 은그릇을 들고 서 있는 것을 보고는
하인이 주인에게 말하였다.

Then, the servant saw him standing on the side of the road holding a

silver bowl and said to the master:

"아가씨 장례 때에 무덤 속에 묻은 그릇을 벌써 어떤 사람이 훔쳐
가졌습니다."

 

“Someone has already stolen the bowl that was buried in the grave 

during the young lady’s funeral.”

 

주인이 말하였다. "그게 무슨 말이냐?"

The owner said. “What do you mean?”

하인이 말하였다.

"저 서생이 가지고 있는 은그릇을 보고 한 말씀입니다."

said the servant.
“That’s what I said when I saw the silverware that he had.”

주인이 마침내 탔던 말을 멈추고 양생에게 그릇을 얻게 된 사연을 물었다.

양생이 전날 약속한 그대로 대답하였더니 여인의 부모가 놀라며

의아스럽게 여기다가 한참 뒤에 말하였다.
The owner finally stopped the horse he was riding and asked Yangsaeng 

the story of how he got the bowl.
When Yangsaeng answered exactly as he had promised the day before,

the woman's parents were surprised and puzzled, but spoke after a while.

"내 슬하에 오직 딸자식 하나가 있었는데, 왜구의 난리를 만나 싸움판
에서 죽었다네."

“I had only one daughter, but we encountered a rampage from Japanese 

pirates and ended up in a fight. She died in."

 

"미처 장례도 치르지 못하고 개령사 곁에 임시로 묻어 두고는 이래저래
미루어 오다가 오늘까지 이르게 되었다네."

“They couldn’t even hold a funeral, so they temporarily buried her next

to Gaeryeongsa Temple and kept putting it off for various reasons until

today."

오늘이 벌써 대상 날이라,
어버이된 심경에 재나 올려 명복을 빌어 줄까 한다네.
Since two years have already passed today, I thought I would offer a 

memorial service and pray for your soul to rest in peace as you a parent.

 

자네가 정말 그 약속대로 하려거든, 내 딸자식을 기다리고 있다가

같이 오게나. 놀라지는 말게나."

If you really want to keep your promise, wait for my daughter and then 

come with her. “Don’t be surprised.”

그 귀족은 말을 마치고 먼저 개령사로 떠났다.

양생은 우두커니 서서 여인이 오기를 기다렸다.

After speaking, the noble left for Gaeryeongsa Temple first.
Yangsaeng stood in silence and waited for the woman to come.

 

약속하였던 시간이 되자 과연 한 여인이 계집종을 데리고 허리를 간들

거리며 오는데, 바로 그 여인이었다.

When the promised time arrived, a woman came, wiggling her hips, 

accompanied by a servant girl. It was that woman.

 

그들은 서로 기뻐하면서 손을 잡고 절로 향하였다.

They were happy with each other and headed to the temple holding hands.

 

여인은 절 문에 들어서자 먼저 부처에게 예를 드리고 곧 흰 휘장 안으로
들어갔다.
When the woman entered the temple gate, she first bowed to Buddha 

and then entered the white curtain.

그의 친척과 절의 스님들은 모두 그 말을 믿지 못하고, 오직 양생만이
혼자서 보았다. 그 여인이 양생에게 말하였다.
His relatives and the monks at the temple all could not believe what he 
said, and only Yang Sheng saw it alone. The woman said to Yangsaeng.

 

"함께 저녁이나 드시지요."

“Let’s have dinner together.”

양생이 그 말을 여인의 부모에게 알리자, 여인의 부모가 시험해 보려고

같이 밥을 먹게 하였다. 

When Yangsaeng reported this to the woman's parents, the woman's

parents had them eat together to test it out.

 

그랬더니 그 여인의 얼굴은 보이지 않으면서 오직 수저 놀리는 소리만

들렸는데, 인간이 식사하는 것과 한가지였다.

Then, the woman's face was not visible and only the sound of spoons 

being played was heard, just like a human being eating.

 

그제야 여인의 부모가 놀라 탄식하면서, 양생에게 권하여 휘장 옆에서

같이 잠자게 하였다.

Only then did the woman's parents sigh in astonishment and persuaded 

Yangsaeng to sleep with them next to the curtain.

 

한밤중에 말소리가 낭랑하게 들렸는데, 사람들이 가만히 엿들으려 하면

갑자기 그 말이 끊어졌다.

A loud voice could be heard in the middle of the night, but when people 

tried to eavesdrop, the conversation suddenly stopped.

여인이 양생에게 말하였다.
The woman said to Yangsaeng.

"제가 법도를 어겼다는 것은 저도 잘 알고 있습니다. 저도 어렸을 때에

『시경』과『서경』을 읽었으므로, 예의를 조금이나마 알고 있습니다.

“I know very well that I have broken the law. I also read the classics 

when I was young, so I know a little bit about etiquette.

 

그렇지만 하도 오래 다북쑥 우거진 속에 묻혀서 들판에 버림받았다가

사랑하는 마음이 한번 일어나고 보니, 끝내 걷잡을 수가 없게 되었던

것입니다.

However, after being buried in the thickets and being abandoned in the 

fields for so long, once my love arose, it became uncontrollable.

지난번 절에 가서 복을 빌고 부처님 앞에서 향불을 사르며 박명했던

한평생을 혼자서 탄식하다가 뜻밖에도 삼세(三世)의 인연을 만나게

되었으므로, 소박한 아내가 되어 백년의 높은 절개를 바치려고

하였습니다.

The last time I went to a temple to pray for good fortune, burn incense 

in front of the Buddha, and lament alone about my dark life, 

I unexpectedly met the fate of the third world, so I decided to become 

a simple wife and offer a hundred years of high devotion.

술을 빚고 옷을 기워 평생 지어미의 길을 닦으려 했었습니다만,

애닮게도 업보(業報)를 피할 수가 없어서 저승길을 떠나야 하게

되었습니다.

I tried to pave the way for my life by brewing alcohol and making 

clothes, but unfortunately I could not avoid karma, 

so I had to leave the underworld.

 

즐거움을 미처 다하지도 못하였는데, 슬픈 이별이 닥쳐왔습니다.

이제는 제가 떠날 시간이 되었습니다.

Before I could even finish my joy, a sad farewell came.
Now it is time for me to leave.

 

운우(雲雨)는 양대(陽臺)에 개고 오작(烏鵲)은 은하에 흩어질 것입니다.

이제 한번 헤어지면 뒷날을 기약하기가 어렵습니다.

Clouds and rain will clear in both directions, and misfortunes will be 

scattered across the galaxy.
Now that you have broken up, it is difficult to make any plans for the

future.

헤어지려고 하니 아득하기만 해서 무어라 말해야 할지 모르겠습니다."

“When I try to break up, it feels so distant that I don’t know what to say.”

사람들이 여인의 영혼을 전송하자 울음소리가 그치지 않았다.
혼이 문 밖에까지 나가자 소리만 은은하게 들려 왔다.

As people transmitted the woman's soul, the crying did not stop.
As soon as the soul went outside the door, only soft sounds could be

heard.

남은 소리가 차츰 가늘어지더니 목메어 우는 소리와 분별할 수 없게

되었다.

The remaining sound gradually became weaker and became 
indistinguishable from the sound of choking and crying.

여인의 부모는 그제야 그 동안 있었던 일이 사실인 것을 알게 되어

더 이상 의심하지 않았다.

 

Only then did the woman's parents realize that what had happened was 

true and they no longer had any doubts.

 

양생도 또한 그 여인이 귀신인 것을 알고는 더욱 슬픔을 느끼게 되어,

여인의 부모와 함께 머리를 맞대고 울었다.

 

Yangsaeng also felt even more sad when he found out that the woman 

was a ghost, so he put his head together and cried with the woman's 

parents.

여인의 부모가 양생에게 말하였다.

The woman’s parents told Yangsaeng.

"은그릇은 자네가 쓰고 싶은 대로 맡기겠네.

또 내 딸자식 몫으로 밭 몇 마지기와 노비 몇 사람이 있으니,

자네는 이것을 신표로 하여 내 딸자식을 잊지 말게나."

 

“I’ll leave the silverware to whatever you want to use.

Also, for my daughter's share, there are a few field managers

and a few slaves.
“Please use this as a sign and never forget my daughter.

 

”이튿날 양생이 고기와 술을 마련하여 개령동 옛자취를 찾아갔더니,

과연 시체를 임시로 묻어 둔 곳이 있었다.

 

“The next day, Yangsaeng prepared meat and alcohol and visited 

the old traces of Gaeryeong-dong, and indeed, there was a place 

where the body was temporarily buried.

 

양생은 제물을 차려 놓고 슬피 울면서 그 앞에서 지전(紙錢)을 불사르고

정식으로 장례를 치러 준 뒤에, 제물을 지어 위로하였다.

 

Yangsaeng prepared an offering, wept in sorrow, burned a paper plate 

in front of her, held a formal funeral, and comforted her by making

an offering.

장례를 치른 뒤에도 양생은 슬픔을 이기지 못하였다.

밭과 집을 모두 팔아 사흘 저녁이나 잇따라 재를 올렸더니,

여인이 공중에서 양생에게 말하였다.

Even after the funeral, Yangsaeng could not overcome his sadness.
He sold all his fields and houses and offered sacrifices for three

evenings in succession.
The woman spoke to Yang Saeng in the air.

"저는 당신의 은혜를 입어 이미 다른 나라에서 남자의 몸으로 태어나게

되었습니다.

“Thanks to your grace, I have already been born as a man in another 

country.

 

비록 저승과 이승이 멀리 떨어져 있지만, 당신의 은혜에 깊이 감사

드립니다. 당신도 이제 다시 정업을 닦아 저와 함께 윤회를 벗어나십시요."

"Although the other world and this world are far away, I am deeply grateful 

for your grace. Now, you too, practice your righteousness again and 

escape reincarnation with me.”

양생은 그 뒤에 다시 장가들지 않았다. 지리산에 들어가 약초를 캐었는데,

언제 죽었는지는 알지 못한다.

Yangsaeng did not marry again after that. He went into Jiri Mountain to 

dig up medicinal herbs, but it is not known when he died.
