A few months before I retired from an airline company, four new recruits, all younger than my own children,

joined the company and came to introduce themselves. Seeing them brought back memories of my own

first days, when I joined “Nongshim” at the Gap-eul Building.

Back then, I would wake up at 6 a.m., rush to a Japanese language school in Yeongdeungpo to learn

hiragana and katakana, and make sure to arrive at the Daebang-dong headquarters by 8 a.m.

There, I familiarized myself with the ramen production process, carried sacks of flour, attended newcomer

orientation, and ventured into the city to personally sell ramen and snack products. After work, I was required

to join team dinners with my seniors—making sure I was seen—before finally heading home around 10 p.m.

At that time, the words of my boss were like the word of God, and everything he instructed had to be carried

out perfectly and without exception.

About six months into the job, I started to get the hang of things. When I began designing the electrical systems

for the Anseong soup factory, my immediate supervisor, Assistant Manager Kang, ordered me to get four or five

quotes for electrical materials, choose the supplier with the best terms, and submit the paperwork for approval.

I looked through the phone book, contacted some reputable companies, met with their representatives, specified

our requirements, and selected two companies, “A” and “B,” that offered the most favorable conditions.

I prepared the necessary documents for approval.

However, during the approval process, my supervisor rejected my submission, saying the reasons for selecting companies “A” and “B” were unclear. After two rounds of rejection, feeling exhausted and holding my aching head

in my hands, I closed my eyes. That’s when Assistant Manager Kang came up behind me and asked,

“Don’t you know what you did wrong? I want you to produce satisfactory results by the end of the day.”

I couldn’t go home that night and stayed in the office until 11 p.m. revising the paperwork. Suddenly, the phone

rang. I answered, “Hello,” but after a brief silence, the call ended. I suspect it was Assistant Manager Kang

checking whether I was following his instructions properly.

The next morning, after washing up and combing my hair, I sat at my desk to review the documents.

Assistant Manager Kang appeared and said, “You’re in early.”

After a moment’s hesitation, I handed him the paperwork. He invited me for a coffee on the rooftop.

Looking at me with an inscrutable smile, he said, “How can you be so clueless? What use is that head of yours?”

He continued, “Your head is for thinking, not just for decoration. The companies have already been decided in

advance, so just get the quotes from the designated supplier and submit the paperwork for approval.”

Although he was about my age, he treated me as if I were naive, mocking my intelligence.

I was both offended and regretful for having respected him as a senior until then.

This unpleasant experience was one of the reasons I later decided to go abroad to study.

later learned that, from the beginning, the suppliers had already been chosen under the general manager’s

orders. My job was simply to prepare the paperwork accordingly. I still don’t know whether Assistant Manager

Kang was testing me or trying to break me down to make me obedient.

Feeling like I was “useless,” I was caught in self-doubt and weakness.

The book that helped me regain my confidence was the philosophy of Zhuangzi.

The theory of “uselessness” taught me that “even if something seems useless, it still has value.”

There’s a story of a massive oak tree so vast that thousands of cattle could rest in its shade.

People from all over gathered to witness this spectacle, and even the famous carpenter Shi’s disciples admired

the tree. Yet, Carpenter Shi paid it no attention and simply walked by.

His disciples found this strange and asked why. The master replied, “That tree is useless.” Surprised,

they pressed further.

“If you make a boat from that tree, it will sink immediately. If you make a coffin, it will rot right away.

If you make furniture, it will quickly break. If you use it as a pillar, insects will infest it.

In short, it’s ‘useless.’ The only reason it’s grown so enormous is because it was never considered useful.”

But a few days later, the giant tree appeared in Master Shi’s dream and rebuked him:

“To humans, I may seem useless. Pear and apple trees bear fruit, so they seem useful to you.

But because they bear fruit, their branches are broken, and they don’t live out their full lifespan.

Why don’t you realize that?

"Your strengths can shorten your own life. Everyone in this world is desperate to become useful.

In doing so, they repeat foolish actions to be seen as valuable. I, on the other hand, have consistently strived

to be useless. Now, as I near the end of my natural life, I have finally become a tree that embodies uselessness.

If I had been a useful tree, I would have been cut down long ago."

In truth, while that tree may not have been useful as timber, its shade provided rest for thousands of cattle,

thus it had its own value.

I shared this story of Zhuangzi with the new recruits, encouraging them to believe in themselves regardless

of the challenges they face. I advised them to enjoy small achievements, pursue a balanced life, and quietly

persist without being intimidated, assuring them they could overcome any obstacles.

"No one is truly useless. Uselessness can be useful, and usefulness can be useless!"
