귀신들린 차

 

모처럼 만에 내리는 비로 인하여 제법 공기가 선선해진 느낌이다. 식료품을 사러 건널목

에서 신호를 기다리고 있는데 왠 하얀색의 외제차가 "빵" 하는 소리의 경적을 울리며 내가

있는 보도불럭으로 흙탕물을 튕겨며 쏜살같이 지나간다.

 

It feels like the air has cooled down a bit due to the rain after a long time. As I was waiting

for the signal at the crosswalk to buy groceries, a white imported car honked loudly and

sped past, splashing muddy water onto the sidewalk where I stood.

 

왠지 눈에 익다 싶어 살펴보니 그 악명높은(나에게는) 머큐리 세이블(MERCURY SABLE)

이었다.

 

Somehow, the car seemed familiar, and upon closer inspection, it turned out to be the

notorious (at least to me) Mercury Sable.

 

하얀 물보라를 일으키며 달려가는 뒷 모습을 바라보며 이렇게 중얼거렸다.

"제발 목적지에서 정지가 되어야 할텐데.."

 

Watching it drive away, leaving a white spray behind, I muttered to myself,

"I hope it stops at its destination..."

 

미국에서는 전생에 무슨죄를 많이 지었는지 나하고 궁합이 맞는 자동차를 만나기 힘들었다.

 

In the U.S., I found it hard to encounter a car that suited me well, perhaps due to the sins

of my past life.

 

뉴욕에서 "포드의 토로스" 를 그렇게 폐차한 후에 뉴욕 라디오 방송국에서 방송하는

"라디오 복덕방" 이란 프로가 있었는데 아파트렌트나 각종 중고차량을 방송을 통해 소개해

주는 프로그램이었다.

 

After scrapping a "Ford Taurus" in New York, there was a radio program called "Radio Real

Estate" on a New York radio station, which introduced apartment rentals and various used

cars.

 

자동차가 없어서 불편하던 차에 한 여인이 '머큐리 세이블' 을 판다는 방송을 듣고 부랴부랴

전화를 했다.

 

Hearing a broadcast about a woman selling a "Mercury Sable" when I was without a car,

I hurriedly made a call.

 

차를 보러간다고 주소를 가르켜 달라고하자 이곳까지 오는길도 어렵고 하니 많은 사람이

모이는 Korea Grocery Store 주차장에서 만나자고 한다.

그래야 다른 사람에게도 한 장소에서 한번에 보여줄 수 있다면서.

 

When I asked for the address to go see the car, she suggested meeting at the parking lot

of a Korea Grocery Store, as it was difficult to find the way to her place, and she could show

the car to more people at once.

 

그래서 약속을 하고 주차장에서 만나게 됐는데 선그라스를 쓴 한 여인이 차안에 시동을 켠채

앉아 있었다.

 

We agreed to meet, and at the parking lot, a woman wearing sunglasses was sitting in the

car with the engine on.

 

차를 보러 왔다니까 한번 차를 몰아 보라며 차에서 내린다. 한바퀴 동네를 돌고오니 마음에

드냐며 어떻게 하겠냐고한다.

 

When I said I came to see the car, she got out and told me to take it for a spin.

After driving around the neighborhood, she asked if I liked it and what I intended to do.

 

왜 계속 주차장에서도 엔진을 끄지않고 있을까? 하는 이상한 생각이 불쑥 들었지만 날씨가

더워 에어콘을 작동하느라 그랬나보다 생각하며 차소리도 조용하고 에어콘도 시원하게

작동되기에 흥정을 하여 3,000불 인가에 그 차를 구입했다.

 

I wondered why she didn’t turn off the engine even in the parking lot, but thought it was due

to the hot weather and the need for air conditioning.

Since the car was quiet and the air conditioning worked well, I negotiated and bought the

car for about $3,000.

 

그러던 어느 쉬는날 식구들을 데리고 "Crab Orchard" 라는 해변가로 놀러갔다.

철사로 만든 쇠그물에 고등어 같은 생선이나 닭다리를 넣어두고 바닷물에 담가두면 커다란

'게'가 서너 마리씩 잡히는데 특히 아이들이 즐거워했다.

 

One day, on a day off, I took my family to a beach called "Crab Orchard." We caught large

crabs by putting fish like mackerel or chicken legs in wire mesh and submerging them in

the seawater, which the kids especially enjoyed.

 

그곳에서 수영도하고 게도 잡고 고기도 구어먹고 즐거운 시간을 보내다가 집으로 돌아오는데

차가 많이 밀려서 가다 서다 하기를 몇 번하는데 갑자기 '클럭'하는 소리와 함께 차가 서버린다.

 

After swimming, catching crabs, and grilling meat, we had a great time and headed home.

The traffic was heavy, with frequent stops, when suddenly a 'clunk' sound was heard,

and the car stopped.

 

차가 멈추니 뒤의 차들이 빨리 가라며 경적을 울린다.

앞에서 경찰이 차량을 통제하다 내차가 서버리니 옆의 풀밭으로 차량을 옮기란다.

 

The cars behind honked, urging us to move. The police, who were controlling traffic ahead,

told me to move the car to the side grass area.

 

차에서 내려 힘들게 핸들을 움직여 풀밭에 옮겨 놓으니 토잉카가 언제 알고 왔는지 앞에서

기다리고 있다. 뒷자석에 앉아 있던 아들 윤선이는 "어떻게 해" 하면서 실망이 가득하다.

 

After getting out and struggling to steer the car to the grass, a tow truck appeared,

as if it knew, and waited in front. My son Yoon-seon, sitting in the back seat, looked

disappointed, asking, "What do we do?"

 

뉴욕에서 "토로스" 토잉으로 적지않은 돈을 지불했던 나로서는 이래서는 안되겠다 싶어

경찰에게 다가가 "점프케이블 만 연결시켜 달라"며 사정하자 뒷 트렁크에서 케이블을 꺼내어

내차의 배터리와 경찰차의 배터리를 연결시켜 주었다.

 

Having spent quite a bit on towing the "Taurus" in New York, I felt I couldn’t let this happen.

I approached the police, pleading to connect a jumper cable, and they retrieved a cable from

the trunk, connecting my car’s battery to the police car’s battery.

 

떨리는 마음으로 자동차키를 힘차게 돌리니 '부릉' 하면서 시동이 걸린다.

경찰에게 "Thanks" 를 연발하며 고마움을 표시하자 다른차를 막고 우리차를 먼저 가라고

인도를 해준다.

 

With nervous anticipation, I turned the ignition key firmly and heard the engine roar to life.

I repeatedly thanked the police, who then stopped other cars and guided ours to go first.

 

찝찝한 마음으로 집에 도착하여 뒷 트렁크를 열어보니 구석에 무엇인지 번쩍인다.

 

Arriving home with a lingering unease, I opened the trunk and saw something shiny in the

corner.

 

손을 뻗쳐 꺼내어보니 아까 경찰이 연결해준 것 같은 타입의 "Jump Cable" 이다.

 

Reaching out, I found a "Jump Cable" similar to the one the police had used earlier.

 

또 속았나 하는 생각과 내일 출근할 때도 시동이 꺼지면 어떻하나 하는 생각에 잠을 설치다가

다른 문제도 있을 것 같아 아침 일찍 차량을 살펴보니 뒷자석 밑바닥에서 한웅큼의 유리조각

파편이 나오는 것이 아닌가? 이것은 예전에 사고차량 이었다는 것과 시동에 문제가 있다는

것을 증명해 주는 것이었다.

 

Worried about being deceived again and whether the car would stall on my way to work the

next day, I couldn't sleep well. The next morning, suspecting other issues, I checked the car

early and found a handful of glass shards under the back seat.

This indicated it was a previously accident-damaged vehicle with an ignition problem.

 

매일같이 고속도로로 출퇴근하는 나로서는 불안한 마음에 한국 정비소에 문제점을 말하고

수리를 의뢰했다.

 

As someone who commutes on the highway daily, I felt uneasy and described the issues to

a Korean repair shop, requesting repairs.

 

어떻게 한인 방송국에 사고 내역도 숨기고 이런 하자 있는 차를 광고했는지 속이 상했지만

이민생활이 힘들어서 그런지 모르지만 한국인들을 너무 믿지 말라는 정비소 사장님의 말을

돼새기며 이틀 후 다 고쳤다는 통보를 받고 차를 찾아왔다.

 

Though upset about how someone could advertise such a flawed car without disclosing

its accident history on a Korean broadcast, the repair shop owner advised not to trust people

too much, considering the tough immigrant life.

Two days later, they informed me the car was fixed, and I retrieved it.

 

'스타터 모터' 와 '배터리'를 교체했으니 이젠 절대로 엔진이 꺼지는 일이 없을꺼라며 장담

을 들으며 집으로 돌아왔고 사장님의 말이 정말 옳았다는 것을 확인하는데는 오랜 시간이

걸리지 않았다.

 

They assured me that replacing the 'starter motor' and 'battery' would prevent the engine

from stalling. I returned home, and it didn’t take long to verify the shop owner's words were

true.

 

어느날 시장을 다녀오다 언덕길을 내려오는데 저 밑에 검은 개 한마리가 어슬렁거리고 있었다.

 

One day, returning from the market and driving downhill, I noticed a black dog loitering below.

 

속도를 늦추려고 브레이크에 발을 올려 놓는데 브레이크가 굳어지며 눌러지지가 않는다.

 

When I placed my foot on the brake to slow down, the brake stiffened and wouldn’t depress.

 

차량 속도는 점점 빨라지고 핸들을 돌려 피하려하니 핸들도 돌아가지 않는다.

"어! 어!"하면서 달리다 보니 앞에서 노란 차량이 여유있게 모습을 드러낸다.

 

The vehicle's speed increased, and steering to avoid obstacles, the steering wheel wouldn’t

turn either. As I exclaimed "Oh! Oh!" while driving, a yellow car appeared leisurely ahead.

 

급한 마음에 경적을 울렸으나 이사실을 모르는 그 차량은 "역시 동양사람은 안돼" 하는 듯이

여유가 만만이다.

 

In a hurry, I honked, but the driver, oblivious to the situation, seemed to think,

"As expected, Asians can't do it," exuding confidence.

 

급한 마음에 사이드 브레이크를 급하게 당기고 시동을 끄려고 자동차키를 빼냈다.

 

In desperation, I quickly pulled the handbrake and tried to turn off

 

그런데 웬걸? 시동이 꺼지지 않고 그대로 달리는 것이 아닌가? "세상에 이런 해괴한 일이"

하는 생각도 잠시 커다란 나무에 "쿵" 하고 부딪힌 후에도 시동은 꺼지지 않다가 몇 번 인가

몸을 '크르릉' 하고 떤 후에 비로소 잠잠해 졌다.

 

But what happened next was unbelievable—the engine wouldn't stop and kept running! 

I thought, "What a bizarre situation," but then I crashed into a large tree with a "thud,"

and even then, the engine didn’t stop immediately.

After a few moments of the car trembling with a 'grr,' it finally went silent.

 

마치 유령영화의 한장면 같았다. 또 토잉카를 불러 먼저번 정비소에 맡기면서 웬일이냐

했더니 고개만 갸웃뚱거리며 정비소 20년에 이런일은 처음이라며...

진짜 귀신들린 차 였던가?

 

It felt like a scene from a ghost movie. When I called the tow truck and took the car back to

the repair shop, they just scratched their heads, saying they’d never seen anything like this

in 20 years. Was it really a haunted car? 👻

 

마치 '스티븐 킹'의 소설을 원작으로 한 1983년 방영된 'Christine'이란 영화처럼 자동차에

깃든 악령이 주인공을 사고로 이끌며 각종 사고와 악행을 저지르게하는 끔찍한 자동차가

아니었나 싶다.

 

It reminded me of the 1983 movie "Christine," based on a Stephen King novel, where a car

possessed by an evil spirit leads its owner into accidents and misdeeds.

Could this be such a terrifying vehicle?

 

이 머큐리 세이블을 나중에 끝내 "디즈니 월드" 가는 길에 생을 마감한 바로 그 차였다.

 

Ultimately, this Mercury Sable met its end on the way to "Disney World."
