노스 캘로라이나의 노상강도(Highway Robbery in North Carolina)

미고속도로 노상강도

96 년도 7 월 이맘 때로 기억된다. 플로리다주에 살고있던 이상만씨 내외가 놀러
오라고 성화를 하고 미국에 있는 동안 '올랜도'에 있는 디지니월드를 구경하는 것
도 추억에 남을 것 같아 모처럼 휴가를 신청했다.

I remember it was around this time in July 1996. Mr. Lee Sang-man and his wife,
who lived in Florida, insisted that we visit them, and I thought visiting Disney
World in Orlando while we were in the U.S. would be memorable,
so I took a vacation for the first time in a while.

비행기 여행은 너무 단조로울 것 같아 자동차로 여행하기로 결정하고 뉴욕에서
플로리다 까지 머나먼길에 혹시라도 타이어 펑크가 날까봐 한국인 정비소에서
타이어 4 개를 새것으로 교환하고 냉각수및 트랜스미션 오일도 점검하는 등
영원히 잊지못할 지옥의 여행은 이렇게 시작되었다.

The idea of traveling by plane seemed too monotonous, so we decided to travel
by car. To prepare for the long journey from New York to Florida, we replaced all
four tires with new ones at a Korean auto shop, and checked the coolant and
transmission oil, thus beginning an unforgettable hellish journey.

뉴욕 - 뉴저지 - 델라웨어 - 버지니아 - 노스 캘로라이나 - 사우스 캘로라이나 - 조지아
- 플로리다 까지 무려 7 주를 거쳐야하는 기나긴 여행이었다.

The journey was a long one, spanning seven states: New York, New Jersey,
Delaware, Virginia, Northern Carolina, Southern Carolina, Georgia, and finally
Florida.

차를 배에 실고 델라웨어 강을 건널 때는 수 많은 갈매기 떼들이 "끼르륵" 거리며
우리 아이들이 하늘에 던져 주는 팝콘을 받아먹느라 장관을 이루었다.

While crossing the Delaware River by ferry, flocks of seagulls created a spectacular
scene as they eagerly caught the popcorn our kids threw into the air.

버지니아주에서 하루를 묵은후 노스 캘로라이나로 들어선지 한시간 정도 되었을까
언덕길을 내려오는데 내차의 속도가 점점 떨어지더니 정지해 버린다.

After spending a night in Virginia, about an hour into North Carolina, my car's speed
started to drop and eventually stopped on a downhill road.

오일타는 냄새가 심한 것을 보니 트랜스미션에 문제가 있는 것 같아 오일 및 냉각수
를 보충하고 차를 식힌후 다시 시동을 걸었으나 꿈쩍도 안한다.

The strong smell of burning oil indicated a problem with the transmission. After
replenishing the oil and coolant and letting the car cool down, we tried to start it again,
but it wouldn't budge.

차뒤에서 자고있던 아이들이 놀래서 밖으로 나오며 "또 고장이야?" 하며 실망감을
감추지 못한다.

The kids, who had been sleeping in the back, came out startled and disappointed,
asking, "Is it broken again?"

아내와 아이들을 고속도로가에 있는 풀밭으로 가 쉬게하고 지나가는 차를 세워 도움을
구하려 하였으나 다른 주에서는 쉽게 볼 수 있는 고속도로 순찰 차량도 보이지 않는다.

I had my wife and kids rest on the grassy side of the highway and tried to flag down
passing cars for help, but couldn't even find a highway patrol car, which is common
in other states.

할수없이 가족들을 남겨두고 한낮의 열기로 달아오른 고속도로를 건너 가까운 마을을
찾아 헤매여야 했다.

With no other choice, I had to leave my family behind and cross the heated highway
in the midday sun to search for a nearby town.

가까스로 어느 마을내에 있는 모텔을 찾아서 방을 구해 가족들을 옮겨놓고 전화번호부
에 있는 정비소로 전화를하여 차를 토잉시켰다.

Eventually, I found a motel in a town and got a room for the family. I called a repair
shop from the phone book and had the car towed.


주변을 둘러보니 건장한 흑인 서너 명이 서성거리고 있는데 정비시설도 엉성하고 차량
껍데기가 여기저기 널려있는게 마치 폐차장 같은 느낌이 든다.

Looking around, I noticed a few robust-looking African-Americans lingering nearby,
and the repair facilities were shabby, with vehicle shells scattered around like a junkyard.


꺼림직했지만 별다른 방도가 없어 차를 맡기기로하고 수리비를 물어보니까 트랜스미션
이 고장나서 다른 것으로 교체를 해야되는데 수표는 안되고 현찰로 500 불을 달란다.

Feeling uneasy but with no other option, I decided to leave the car there.
When I inquired about the repair cost, they said the transmission was broken and needed
replacement, but they only accepted cash—no checks—and demanded $500.


'AAA(트리플 에이)' 라는 오토클럽에도 가입했는데도 이곳에서는 통용이 안된단다.

Even though I was a member of the AAA auto club, they said it wasn't valid there.

 

그래도 고쳐서 사용하는 것이 나을 것 같아 내일까지 고쳐주기로 약속하고 현찰 500 불을
지불했다.

Thinking it was better to get it fixed, I agreed to have it repaired by the next day and paid
$500 in cash.


다음날 전화로 확인하니 아직 중고 트랜스미션을 구하지 못하여 수리할 수 없으니 하루만
더 기다리란다.

The next day, when I called to check, they said they hadn't found a used transmission yet
and asked us to wait one more day.


마냥 기다릴 수가 없어 플로리다에 다녀올 동안 고쳐달라고 부탁을 하고 이상만씨에게
전화를 했더니 자기차를 가지고 4 시간 이상을 달려 나에게 달려와 주었다.

Unable to wait indefinitely, I asked them to fix it while I went to Florida. When I called
Mr. Lee Sang-man, he drove over four hours to help me.

이상만씨 도움으로 차량을 렌트해 목적지인 디즈니월드 까지 무사히 도착할 수 있었다.

Thanks to Mr. Lee's help, we rented a car and safely arrived at our destination, Disney World.


그 곳에서 불꽃놀이를 마지막으로 즐기고 집으로 돌아오려고 주차장에 왔는데 어두워진데
다가 주차장이 넓어 어디에다 주차했는지 도무지 기억이 안난다.

After enjoying the fireworks as the last event, we returned to the parking lot to head home,
but it was dark and the parking lot was vast, so we couldn't remember where we parked.


디지니 만화에 나오는 주인공 이름을 따서 만들어진 7 - 8 개의 너른 주차장으로 이루어
졌는데 '도날드 덕' 주차장인지 '쿠피' 주차장인지 확인을 안해둔 것이 문제였다.

The parking lot was divided into 7-8 sections named after Disney characters. We hadn't noted
whether it was the 'Donald Duck' or 'Goofy' section, which was a problem.


한시간여를 헤맨후 겨우 그곳 순찰차량의 도움을 받아 우리차를 찾을 수 있었다.

After wandering for about an hour, we finally found our car with the help of a patrol vehicle.


태풍이 플로리다주 남쪽 해상에서 발달하여 뉴욕쪽으로 북진한다는 뉴스때문에 새벽 일찍
떠나기로하고 내차가 있는 노던 캘로라이나를 첫번째 목적지로 잡았다.

Hearing news that a typhoon was developing off the southern coast of Florida and moving
north towards New York, we decided to leave early in the morning, setting Northern Carolina
as our first destination to retrieve our car.


오후 늦게 그곳에 도착하여 내차를 찾으니 보이질 않는다. 까만 기름때로 번질거리는 런닝
셔츠를 입은 한 흑인에게 차를 찾으러 왔다니까 자기는 모르겠단다.

Arriving late in the afternoon, our car was nowhere to be seen. When I asked an African-
American man in a greasy tank top where my car was, he said he didn’t know.


불안한 마음에 두리번거리다 발견한 내차의 몰골이란?

Feeling anxious, I finally found my car, or what was left of it!


이미 차라고 말 할 수 없는 고철더미로 변해 있었다.

It had turned into a heap of scrap metal, unrecognizable as a car.

떠나기 전 교체한 4 개의 새 타이어는 사라진지 오래고 열려진 본넷을 보니 엔진도 없고
라지에타도 없고 텅 빈 사이로 맨땅만 보인다.

The four new tires we replaced before leaving were long gone, and when I opened the hood,
the engine and radiator were missing, revealing only bare ground beneath.


마침내 말썽 많던 자가용 '머큐리 세이블' 이 그 생을 마감한 것 이었다.
"아니 이럴 수가?" 내가 500 불을 주었던 그 흑인을 찾았으나 어디 있는지 나타나지 않는다.

Feeling anxious, I finally found my car, or what was left of it!
"No way!" I searched for the African-American man to whom I had given the $500,
but he was nowhere to be found.


순간 도저히 용서할 수 없다는 생각과 함께 렌트카 뒷 트렁크에 있던 쇠뭉치를 꺼내들어 우물
쭈물하는 그 흑인에게 들이대며 돈을 돌려주지 않으면 가만있지 않겠다고 고함을 쳤다.

In a moment of rage, I grabbed a metal rod from the trunk of the rental car and confronted
the hesitant man, threatening to not let it slide unless he returned my money.


아내는 놀라서 내팔을 잡고 "여보! 참아요. 제발!" 하면서 말리는데 아무 것도 안보인다.
"이래서 살인이 일어날 수 있구나" 하는 생각이 뇌리를 스친다.

My wife, shocked, grabbed my arm and pleaded, "Honey! Calm down, please!"
But I saw nothing else. "This is how murders can happen," crossed my mind.


"세상에! 어떻게 해달라는 수리는 안해주고 주인의 허락도 없이 차를 해체시킬 수 있단 말인가?
그것도 현찰로 500 불이나 챙겨간 놈이.."

"How could they dismantle the car without the owner's permission and not do the requested
repairs? And they took $500 in cash..."


워낙 서슬이 퍼렇게 덤벼드는 나의 모습에 놀랬는지 그 시커먼 손을 좌우로 흔들며 진정하란다.

Startled by my aggressive demeanor, he raised his dark hands and motioned for me to calm
down.


이런 소란 끝에 마침내 나에게 돈을 받아간 그 흑인이 나타나 지금 가진 현찰이 없다며 수표를
써주며 미안하게 되었다며 착오가 있었던것 같단다.

After all this commotion, the African-American who had taken my money finally appeared,
saying he didn't have the cash at the moment and gave me a check, apologizing and claiming
it was a mistake.

흑인들로 둘러쌓인 외지에서 고집피워 봤자 나만 손해이고 경찰도 없는 이곳에서 우리가족의
안전도 걱정이되어 수표(CHECK)를 받자마자 부리나케 그자리를 벗어나야 했다.

Surrounded by African-Americans in a foreign area, insisting on my own way would only harm me,
and with no police around, I was concerned for my family's safety.
So, I had to quickly leave the area as soon as I received the check.


뒤를 따라오는 태풍과 경쟁을 하면서 비보라속을 헤치며 겨우 뉴욕에 도착했다.

We raced against the approaching typhoon, battling through the storm, and finally arrived in New York.


모든게 꿈만 같았다. 미국에서도 이런 멀쩡한 노상강도가 아직도 존재하다니...

It all felt like a dream. I couldn't believe such blatant highway robbery still existed in America...


'노던 캘로라이나' 나 '서던 캘로라이나'에는 앞으로 절대로 자동차로 여행은 안하리라 결심을 하고
뉴욕공항에 복귀한 지 며칠 후 시티뱅크에서 연락이 왔다.

I resolved never to travel by car through North or South Carolina again, and a few days after
returning to New York, I received a call from Citibank.

내가 받아온 500 불 짜리 CHECK(수표) 가 부도가 나서 지불을 해줄 수 없단다.

They told me that the $500 check I received had bounced and couldn't be paid.


"이런 괘씸한!" 생각에 비행기 표를 알아보니 휴가철이라 구하기도 힘들 뿐 아니라 왕복 700 불이
넘는다.

"How outrageous!" I thought, checking flight tickets only to find they were hard to get during the
vacation season and cost over $700 for a round trip.

달려가서 따져본들 무슨 이득이 있겠으며 설사 돈으로 받는다해도 왕복 비행기 삯을 제하면 오히려
더 손해가 아닌가?

Even if I went back and argued, what good would it do? Even if I got the money back, deducting
the round-trip flight cost would result in a bigger loss.


"그래 잊자! 액땜했다 치자!" 몇십 번을 되 씹어봐도 억울하고 분한 마음은 가시지 않는데 '임주리' 의
'립스틱 짙게 바르고..' 란 노래가 어디선가 들려온다.

"Alright, let's forget it! Consider it a costly lesson!" No matter how many times I tried to convince
myself, the feeling of injustice and anger didn't subside, but then I heard Im Joo-ri's song
'Lipstick Thickly...' playing somewhere.


"내일이면 잊으리. 또 잊으리 립스틱 짙게........."
그래! 나도 잊고 싶지만 바를 립스틱이 없으니 어찌하리오?

"Tomorrow, I'll forget. I'll forget again, lipstick thickly..." 
Yes! I want to forget too, but how can I when I don't even have lipstick to put on? 🎶
