A few days ago, I visited Seonyudo, one of the Gogunsan Islands. I stayed at a place called
'Saebomvil,' and as I heard the sound of the door opening next to our room, a woman's voice
scolded a barking dog.
"Baduk, be quiet! You're too noisy!" It was clear that Baduk was the dog's name. Naming a dog
Baduk these days felt quite old-fashioned.
The name 'Baduk' reminded me of the dog that appeared alongside Cheolsu and Younghee in
the elementary school textbooks from the early 1960s. Looking out from the second-floor window,
I spotted a small dog with mixed white and black fur being led by a girl.
In a piece of writing by Yi Gyu-bo, a scholar from the Goryeo era, the dog 'Baduk' was highly
praised.
"You have patterns on your fur, are you a descendant of Panhu, the legendary dog, or a successor
of Oryong, with your agility and intelligence? Your devotion to your master is lovable, and your
responsibility in guarding the gate is commendable.
For this, I admire your bravery and cherish your intentions, raising you with affection.
Though you are a humble beast, possessing the spirit of the Big Dipper, no other animal can match
your wisdom and uniqueness."
The term 'Baduk' refers to a dog with mixed black and white spots, while Baduk, the game,
played with black and white stones, originated in China. As Confucius mentioned in the Analects,
"Playing Baduk is better than doing nothing," it seems to remain popular among the middle-aged
population today.
Today, I’d like to share a story about the karmic retribution associated with Baduk.
Yangmudi, praised as the 'Buddha-hearted Emperor' in China, was known for his deep devotion
to Buddhism, attempting to become a monk four times and promoting Buddhism through
numerous temples.
He deeply respected and followed Jigong Hwasang, the greatest monk of that time,
along with many other monks, including Hapdu.
One day, Yangmudi needed advice on state affairs and sent his official to bring Hapdu.
While waiting, he played Baduk with another official. Given Yangmudi's reputation for rewarding
those who played sincerely and criticizing flatterers, officials played to their best ability.
However, on this day, the official’s skills were formidable, which infuriated Yangmudi.
After losing one game and entering the second, he accidentally captured one of the official's
stones and excitedly shouted, "Die!"
Little did Yangmudi know that his spontaneous exclamation, directed at the Baduk stone,
would lead to the death of the revered Hapdu.
The official who went to bring Hapdu heard Yangmudi's shout of "Die!" just as he entered the
room and, unable to question the emperor's fiery temperament, took Hapdu to the execution
ground.
The attendant said to Hapdu, "Venerable monk, I am very sorry. I don't know the exact reason,
but when I informed His Majesty that I had brought you, he became greatly angered and ordered
'Kill him.' What should we do?"
Hapdu responded, "Do not worry, let's proceed. How could I defy any command?"
He then went to the execution ground, where he climbed onto the scaffold, sat in the lotus
position, and recited the following verse.
"The four elements are originally empty, The five aggregates are not truly me. I face the spring
breeze with my head, No different than cutting the spring breeze."
This verse, recited by Hapdu, expressed that our body, made of earth, water, fire, and wind,
is inherently empty. The five aggregates, which classify our mental and physical components,
are not truly us. As I face the spring breeze with my head, the sharp blade cutting my head is
no different from cutting the spring breeze. There's no body to call my own, nothing to live or
die for—don't be concerned.
With a serene smile, Hapdu explained his karma:
"In a distant past life, when I was a young monk, I accidentally killed a toad with a hoe while weeding.
That toad has now become Yangmudi. lives."
Just as I didn’t intend to kill the toad then,
Yangmudi unknowingly kills me today. It’s all karma from past lives."
After saying this, Hapdu vanished into the execution ground's mist.
After finishing the Baduk game, Yangmudi inquired about Hapdu. "Has Hapdu not arrived yet?
I asked to bring him, but there's no news. Did he go somewhere?"
The attendant replied, "No, Your Majesty. You ordered his execution earlier, and it was carried out as
instructed."
"What? Execution? When did I give such an order?" Yangmudi asked in shock, to which the attendant
responded, "While playing Baduk earlier, you shouted 'Die!' loudly..."
Yangmudi, hearing this, was devastated. The loss of the respected monk left him in shock, and after
regaining his senses with a heavy sigh, he asked, "Did Hapdu leave any final words?"
Upon hearing Hapdu's last words from the execution ground, Yangmudi wept endlessly, deeply repenting
and never played Baduk again.
We unknowingly create countless karmic actions as we go through life. Many people live with tears in
their eyes and hearts aching in unfortunate circumstances, despite living kindly, only to find that nothing
goes their way and misfortunes pile up one after another.
At one time, the job, honor, and success we risked our lives for disappear like fleeting clouds when their
time is up, so why did we live with such frantic urgency? Looking back now, it seems like it was all a dream...
Realizing that even the indifferent-looking sky remembers everything, awaken from this futile dream and
say to yourself:
"I am the only one of my kind in this universe, a free, eternal existence not bound by time and space."
