맹구우목(盲龜遇木)

 

'일타스님'의 법문을 '묘허스님'께서 'BTN 불교방송'에서 소개하신 내용이다.

This is from a Dharma talk by 'Ilta Seunim' introduced by 'Myohuh Seunim' on 'BTN Buddhist Broadcasting.'

​

6.25사변 직후의 일입니다. 금강산에 계시던 이혜명스님이 부산으로 피난을 와서 나를 비롯한 여러 스님께

한 편의 실화를 들려 주었습니다.

Shortly after the Korean War, Venerable Lee Hye-myeong, who was staying at Mt. Geumgang, fled to

Busan and shared a true story with several monks, including myself.

 

​이혜명 스님은 경전에도 밝을 뿐 아니라 재를 지내는 등의 각종 의식 집전은 물론 범패도 아주 잘 하셨습니다.

그래서 '팔방미인 큰스님'으로 불리어지기도 했습니다.

Venerable Lee Hye-myeong was not only well-versed in the scriptures but also excelled in conducting

various rituals and Buddhist chants. Thus, he was known as the 'Great Monk of Many Talents.'

 

​스님은 한때 중국의 불교성지를 두루 참배하고 명승지를 구경하였는데, 한 번은 중국 상해의 큰 공원을

들렀더니 공원 한 쪽 편의 까만 소한 마리를 많은 사람들이 신기한 듯이 쳐다보고 있었습니다.

스님도 이상한 호기심이 생겨 소 앞에 세워 놓은 게시판을 자세히 보게 되었는데 그 간판에 적힌 글은 더욱

신기한 것이었습니다.

 

At one time, the monk visited many Buddhist sacred sites in China and toured famous scenic spots.

On one occasion, he visited a large park in Shanghai and noticed many people curiously looking at a

black cow in one corner of the park. The monk, intrigued, carefully read the signboard placed in front

of the cow, and what was written on it was even more fascinating.

​

"지나가는 남녀노소 여러분들이여, 이 소의 배를 보십시요..." 이렇게 시작하여 장광설을 늘어놓았는데 그

내용은 이러했습니다."

 

"Men and women of all ages passing by, look at the belly of this cow..." it began, followed by a long

explanation, which went as follows:

​

상해 근처에 큰 부자가 한 사람 있었습니다. 그 사람은 어떤 이유 때문에 죽마고우인 왕중주에게 자신의 재산

을 관리해 주도록 부탁하고 상당한 대우를 해 주었습니다.

그리고 왕중주에게 등기서류뿐만 아니라 인감도장까지를 모두 맡겼습니다.

 

Near Shanghai, there was a wealthy man. For some reason, he entrusted his property to his lifelong friend,

Wang Jung-ju, for management and treated him generously.

He gave Wang not only the registration documents but also his personal seal.

​

그러나 왕중주는 친구의 은혜로운 부탁을 등지고 합법적으로 모든 재산을 가로챘습니다.

하늘처럼 믿었던 친구가 자기 재산을 교묘하게 사취한 것을 알게 된 부자는 분한 마음을 이길 수 없었지만

어찌할 도리가 없었습니다.

 

However, Wang Jung-ju betrayed his friend's gracious trust and legally seized all the property.

The wealthy man, who had trusted his friend like the sky, was overwhelmed with anger upon discovering

that his wealth had been cleverly embezzled, but he had no means to rectify it.

 

재산을 다 빼앗기고 거지가 되다시피한 그는 조금 남은 패물을 팔아 시골에 내려가서 농사를 짓게 됐습니다.

그리고 논과 밭을 갈 암소를 한 마리 사서 길렀습니다.

 

Having lost everything and reduced to near-beggary, he sold his remaining jewels and moved to the

countryside to farm. He bought a cow for plowing fields.

 

몇 해가 지나자 암소가 새끼를 낳았는데 그 새끼 배에 글씨가 몇 자 새겨진 흔적이 있었습니다.

자세히 보니 자기를 배신했던 철천지원수 왕중주의 이름 석 자였습니다.

 

A few years passed, and the cow gave birth to a calf. The calf had some characters etched on its belly.

Upon closer inspection, it was the name of Wang Jung-ju, his sworn enemy who had betrayed him.

​

이상한 생각이 들어 알아본 결과, 왕중주가 얼마 전에 죽었다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다.

원한으로 가득 차 있던 그는 생각했습니다.

 

Puzzled, he investigated and found out that Wang Jung-ju had recently died. Filled with resentment,

he thought:

​

"그 원수가 죄값을 치루려고 내 집에 태어난 것이구나... 이 놈! 잘 만났다. 사람이 죽을려면 3년 전분터 환장

한다는 말은 있다만, 너처럼 환장한 놈은 일찍이 보지 못하였다.

 

"The enemy has been reborn in my house to pay for his sins... You scoundrel! What a chance meeting.

They say a person goes mad three years before dying, but I've never seen anyone as mad as you.

​

네가 죽어 이제 빚을 갚으로 온 모양이다만, 송아지로 내 집에 태어난 것만으로 나의 분하고 원통한 빚을 다

갚는다고 생각하면 큰 잘못이다. 이제부터 네 놈에게 원수를 갚을 터이니 견뎌 보아라."

 

You might have come to repay your debts, but being born as a calf in my house doesn't repay the anger

and resentment I hold. From now on, I will take my revenge on you, so endure it if you can."

​

이렇게 다짐을 한 그는 아주 모지고 기이한 방법을 생각해 냈습니다. 그는 왕중주의 후신인 송아지를 가두어

놓고 끼니 때마다 먹을 것을 주었습니다.

 

With this resolve, he devised a cruel and unusual method. He confined the calf, believed to be

Wang Jung-ju's reincarnation, and fed it every meal.

​

그러나 밤중이 되면 촛불을 밝혀 놓고 시퍼렇게 간 칼을 들고 우리 안으로 들어가는 것이었습니다.

그리고 매여 있는 송아지 목에 큰 칼을 들이대고는 살기 띤 음성으로 속삭였습니다.

 

However, at night, he would light a candle, take a sharpened knife, and enter the barn.

He would place the knife against the calf's neck and whisper menacingly:

​

"네 이 놈! 왕중주, 이 나쁜 놈! 사람의 탈을 쓰고 어찌 그런 짓을 할 수 있었더냐?

네 놈이 이리와 같은 놈이었으니 그런 짓을 했겠지. 이 나쁜 놈! 내 너를 지금 당장은 죽이지 않겠다.

조금 더 키워서 잡되 그것도 단번에 죽이지는 않을 것이다.

네 놈앞에 숯불을 피워 놓고 시퍼렇게 칼을 갈아 하루에 살 한 점씩만 베어낸 다음,네 놈이 보는 앞에서 구워

술안주로 삼을 것이다. 네 이 놈! 단단히 들어 두어라!"

 

"You scoundrel! Wang Jung-ju, you wicked man! How could you do such a thing wearing a human mask?

You must have been a wolf-like creature to do such a deed. I won't kill you immediately.

I'll raise you a little more and then slaughter you, but not in one go. I'll light charcoal in front of you,

sharpen my knife, and slice a piece of your flesh each day, grilling it before your eyes as a drinking snack.

You scoundrel! Remember this well!"

​

그는 이 일을 매일같이 계속하였습니다. 그러자 왕중주의 이름이 새겨진 송아지는 뻐쩍 마르기만 할 뿐 자라지를

못하는 것이었습니다.

 

He continued this daily. Consequently, the calf with Wang Jung-ju's name etched on it grew thin and couldn't

grow.

 

그렇게 한 동안 지내고 있는데, 하루는 왕중주의 아들이 느닷없이 찾아와서 마당 한 가운데에 넙적 엎드려 사정을

하는 것이었습니다.

 

One day, as this continued, Wang Jung-ju's son suddenly appeared, prostrating himself in the middle

of the yard, pleading earnestly:

 

"어르신네, 제발 널리 용서해 주시옵고 우리 아버지를 살려 주십시오.

재산을 돌려드림은 물론 모든 것을 영감님의 뜻대로 하겠습니다. 부디 아버지만 살려 주십시오."

아들은 수없이 절을 하면서 간청했습니다.

 

"Please, sir, forgive us generously and spare my father. I will return the property and do everything according

to your wishes. Just please save my father."

The son pleaded, bowing repeatedly.

​

"나는 지금 꼭 돈만 가지고 그러는 것이 아니다. 너의 아버지 소행이 너무나 괘씸하고 분함을 참을 수 없어서

그러는 것이다. 그러나저러나 너는 어찌된 일이냐? 어떻게 이 사연을 알게 되었느냐?"

 

"I'm not doing this just for money. Your father's behavior was so despicable and infuriating that I can't

contain my anger. But how do you know about this? How did you learn of this story?"

​

"저희 선친이 어르신네의 은공을 저버리고 사취한 것을 저도 어느 정도 짐작은 했사오나 자세히는 모르고 지냈습니다.

그런데 여러 달 전부터 어머니와 저의 꿈에 선친께서 자주 나타나서 그 동안 지은 죄를 자세히 말씀하셨습니다.

 

"My late father hinted at the betrayal and embezzlement to me, although I didn't know the details.

But for several months, he has appeared in my and my mother's dreams, confessing his sins in detail.

​

그리고 어르신네 집의 소로 태어나 죄 값을 갚으려 하지만, 그 죄가 워낙 크기 때문에 소의 몸을 버리고 나더라도 다시

무서운 지옥으로 떨어져야 한다고 하셨습니다. 뿐만 아니라 지금 당장의 괴로움도 괴로움이거니와 재산을 어서 돌려

드려야만 당신의 죄를 벗을 수 있다고 하셨습니다.

 

He said he was reborn as a cow in your house to repay his sins, but his sins were so great that even after

leaving the cow's body, he would fall into a terrifying hell.

Moreover, he said he could only be relieved of his sins by promptly returning the property.

​

살아생전에 자세한 내용을 말씀하지 않으신 것은 당신이 떳떳하지 못한 행동 가족들이 아는 것을 부끄러워했기 때문

이었고, 그 내용을 알면 저희들이 떳떳한 마음으로 세상을 살 수 없을 것이라는 생각에서였다는 것입니다.

그리고 어르신네께서 계신 이 곳을 꿈속에서 일러주셨습니다.

 

He didn't reveal the details while alive because he was ashamed that his family would know of his unworthy

actions and believed we couldn't live with dignity knowing them. He also showed us this place in a dream."

​

이제 저희가 모든 재산 문서를 이렇게 가지고 와서 사죄를 드리오니, 널리 용서하시옵소서.

부디 이것을 거두어 주시고 저희 아버지를 돌려 주시기만 하면, 그 은혜 백 번 죽어도 잊지 않을 것이옵니다."

그는 지극정성으로 간청하는 아들의 효심에 감동하여 재산을 되돌려받고 송아지를 내어 주었습니다.

 

Now, we bring all the property documents here to apologize, so please forgive us generously.

Please accept this and return our father to us, and we will never forget your grace, even if we die a hundred times."

 

왕중주의 아들은 아버지 후신인 송아지를 데리고 가서 음식도 잘 대접하고 각별히 보살폈습니다. 그 소가 자란 다음

에는 공원에다 좋은 우리를 지어 놓고 아침 저녁으로 정성껏 여물을 쑤어 대접하면서, 오고가는 만 천하 사람들이

이 소를 보고 경각심을 일으켜서 인과를 믿고 선행을 닦으라는 뜻으로 사연을 쓴 안내판을 만들어 놓았던 것입니다.

 

Moved by the son's sincere plea, the man accepted the return of his property and released the calf. Wang

Jung-ju's son took the calf, believed to be his father's reincarnation, treated it well, and cared for it diligently.

As the cow grew, he built a nice pen in a park and fed it diligently, morning and evening.

He created a sign with the story, encouraging all passersby to see the cow, believe in causality,

and cultivate good deeds.

​

위의 내용은 원인없는 결과는 없다는 인과의 법칙과 욕심에 눈이 멀어 친구를 배신한 댓가가 너무 크니 특히 가까이

했던 가족이나 친구를 아프게 하면 수백배로 과보를 받는다는 교훈을 주고있다.

 

This story illustrates the law of causality—there is no effect without a cause—and teaches that the price of

betraying a friend out of greed is immense.

It especially warns against hurting close family or friends, as the consequences will be multiplied many times over.

​

불교에서는 우리가 수없는 다생을 살아오면서 한량없는 죄업을 지어온 탓에 사람 몸을 받고 태어나는 것은 전생에

복을 많이 지었기 때문이라 한다.

즉 인신난득(人身難得), 즉 “사람으로 태어나기 힘들다”는 가르침인데 <잡아함경>에서는 부처님께서 맹구우목

(盲龜遇木)과 조갑상토(爪甲上土)의 비유를 들어서 인신난득을 가르치신다.

 

In Buddhism, it is said that being born as a human is due to accumulating a lot of merit in past lives.

This teaching, known as Inshin Nandeuk (人身難得), meaning "the rarity of obtaining a human body," is

explained by the Buddha through analogies like Mangguwoomok (盲龜遇木) and Jogapsangto (爪甲上土).

​

맹구우목이란 ‘눈먼 거북이가 나무판자를 만남’이란 뜻인데, 부처님께서는 ‘인간이 죽은 후 다시 태어날 때 인간의

몸을 받을 확률’은, ‘온 땅덩이가 바다로 변했을 때 수명이 무량겁인 눈먼 거북이가 바다 밑을 헤엄치다가 숨을 쉬기

위해서 100년에 한 번씩 물 위로 올라오는데 우연히 그곳을 떠다니던 나무판자에 뚫린 구멍에 목이 낄 확률’보다

더 작다고 가르치신다.

 

Mangguwoomok means "a blind turtle encountering a floating log."

The Buddha taught that the probability of being reborn as a human after death is smaller than a blind turtle

living for eons underwater and emerging to breathe every hundred years, by chance fitting its neck into

a hole in a log floating on the vast ocean.

​

조갑상토(爪甲上土)란 ‘손톱 위의 흙’이란 뜻이다. 하루는 부처님께서 손톱 위에 흙을 퍼 올려놓고서 이 흙과 대지의

흙 가운데 어떤 것이 더 많은지 비구들에게 물으셨다. 너무나 당연한 대답이겠지만 스님들은 대지의 흙이 훨씬 많다

고 아뢰었다. 그러자 부처님께서는 사람으로 살다가 인간계나 하늘나라에 태어나는 자는 손톱 위의 흙과 같이 적고

아귀나 축생, 지옥 등 인간계 아래에 태어나는 자는 대지의 흙과 같이 많다고 가르치셨다.

 

Jogapsangto means "soil on a fingernail." Once, the Buddha scooped soil onto his fingernail and asked

the monks whether there was more soil on his nail or on the earth.

The obvious answer was that the earth had much more soil. The Buddha then taught that those who are

reborn into the human or heavenly realms are as few as the soil on a fingernail, while those reborn into the

lower realms, such as hungry ghosts, animals, or hells, are as numerous as the earth's soil.

​

불가에서는 수의 개념은 우리의 상상을 초월한다. 천억(千億) 다음에 조(兆), 경(京), 해(垓)라고 하며 10의 64제곱을

불가사의(不可思議)라 하고, 10의 68제곱은 무량대수(無量大數)라고 한다.

​

In Buddhism, the concept of numbers surpasses our imagination. After a billion (千億), there is a trillion (兆),

quadrillion (京), and quintillion (垓). A number with 64 zeros is called 不可思議 (beyond comprehension),

and one with 68 zeros is 無量大數 (immeasurably large number).

 

그 많은 숫자 가운데 지구에서 인간으로 태어날 확률이 '1/100경조'라고 하니 인간으로 태어나기가 거의 불가능 한 것

이 아닌가?

 

Amidst these vast numbers, the odds of being born as a human on Earth are said to be '1 in 100 quadrillions,'

highlighting the near impossibility of human birth.

​

한 생각 나쁜 마음에 돈의 노예가 되어 친구의 재산을 가로챈 '왕중주'는 이렇게 힘들게 태어난 귀중한 복을 스스로 차

버리고 검정소로 태어나 상해 공원의 한 모퉁이에서 배에 전생의 이름을 새긴채 사람들의 구경거리가 되었으니 업보의

무서움을 다시 한번 깨우치게 하는 이야기이다.

 

Wang Jung-ju, who betrayed his friend for money, squandered this precious merit and ended up as a black

cow in a corner of a Shanghai park, bearing his past life's name on its belly, serving as a spectacle for people.

This story serves as a stark reminder of the fearsome nature of karmic retribution.

​

한번 사람으로 태어 난 몸, 타인에게 존경은 받지 못할 지라도 경멸과 조롱받는 삶은 피해야 되지 않겠는가?

 

Having been born as a human once, shouldn't we at least avoid a life of contempt and ridicule, even if we

cannot earn respect?
