A few days ago, my friend Kyung-bae left for a trip to Vietnam. He texted me saying he would stay one
night in Ho Chi Minh City and then head to Vung Tau in southern Vietnam. I'm not sure what he's going for,
but it's impressive to see him living a busy life, moving diligently day by day.
While we used to strengthen our bond by playing billiards a couple of times a month, now that he's gone,
I find myself smiling at the thought of his playful teasing as we played.
Bang-pyo and I have a connection through our university's broadcasting station, as he's a descendant of
Prince Gwangpyeong and considered an uncle to me. Our tower of friendship has grown as tall as Mount
Sumeru, and it's an unbreakable bond, like a sturdy walnut, that will last for thousands of years.

Yeong-mo, with his characteristic slow Chungcheong dialect, is a master of "eonjung-yugol"
(hidden bone in words), always hitting the core.
His generous heart means his words are never malicious, and he often sharpens my mind with his
insightful reminders.
Se-jin, who stood as a witness at my wedding at Myeongdong Cathedral, is a cherished friend.
He served as the president of Hyejeon College in Hongseong, connecting juniors and seniors with
strong faith in God.
Even from the U.S., Jeong Bang-ju, the woman of loyalty, never forgets her old friends.
She checks in on us and, when visiting Korea, tirelessly brings gifts, spreading joy and a touch of
guilt among her juniors, peers, and seniors.

Other notable friends include Ho-kyu, the eldest brother of the Hongdae broadcasting station, who
opens his heart to juniors without maintaining any distance, and Jin-won, who fosters unity among
juniors through billiards with his harmless fiery temper. Despite working in the provinces,
Jeong-tae occasionally checks in with us.

Jang Hee-seong, Choi Yoon-ja, and Hong Won-taek are pure-hearted individuals who bring joy to

Meeting these people in this lifetime is truly my blessing and the driving force of my life.
Perhaps in a past life, I might have saved a country?
Nowadays, as friends start turning seventy, many choose to travel to Southeast Asia, Guam, or Saipan.
A few years ago, my spouse and I also traveled to Nha Trang, Vietnam, with our son, daughter,
and their families—a big family trip that included our grandchildren, totaling nine people.
It was an exciting trip, the first since our children got married, with my daughter Sang-mi's family coming
from the U.S. with her husband and two children, and my son Yoon-sun's family bringing our grandson
along.
In the past, reaching sixty or seventy meant that our children would throw a big birthday celebration,
but nowadays, at seventy, we're still in our youth by the standards of a 100-year life.
So instead of an unnecessary and showy party, I jokingly suggested a trip if they felt compelled to
celebrate. After about a month of discussions, my son Yoon-sun and daughter Sang-mi crafted a
wonderful travel plan for us.
It was a great opportunity to bond with our grandchildren, Yu-bin, Min-ho, and Yul, so we happily went
to the department store to buy swimsuits and hats. We also studied Nha Trang to find attractions that
would delight the kids.
The joy of traveling with the extended family was palpable as the little ones chirped around, offering
us snacks and drinks with their tiny hands, saying, “Grandma! Grandpa! Have some!” I warmly
thanked them, holding their delicate hands to soak in their warmth.
This brings back memories from 25 years ago, when I traveled from Jeju Island to celebrate my mother’s
seventieth birthday with my siblings Won and Jong-beom. Around ten of her close friends attended,
offering heartfelt congratulations.
Among those who attended the celebration, two friends particularly reminded me of old tales.
One of them was a friend my mother met at Hyehwa Elementary School when she was 8, maintaining
an unwavering friendship for 62 years. She traveled all the way from Daejeon to Miali to attend the
celebration and even performed the song "Sarang-iyeo!" with such tender affection in her eyes as she
looked at my mother. This friend was a former postmaster, and her presence was a heartwarming scene
that truly encapsulated the spirit of "Geumranjigyo."
The term "Geumranjigyo" describes a friendship so close that it is as solid as metal and as fragrant as
orchids. An ancient person named Daehongjeong recorded the names of his closest friends in a ledger
and offered incense to his ancestors, demonstrating the importance placed on friendships in the past.
Another notable friend was from my mother's days at Hanseong Women's High School.
As the eldest of seven siblings, when my mother couldn't afford her tuition, this friend split her own tuition
with her. Later, when my mother had the means, she paid back the rest, sharing in each other's burdens.
There was also a story of my mother lending a large sum of 100 million won to a friend, whose brother's
business later went bankrupt, leaving the debt unpaid. It turned out to be the same friend.
During the IMF crisis, I learned of this and thought, "Wow, how generous my mother is! How could she
lend such a large amount to a friend?" There was a bit of resentment, wondering why she didn't help
her struggling children instead, but my mother never forgot the friendship displayed in high school.

During the Spring and Autumn period in Qi, Guan Zhong expressed his gratitude to his friend Bao Shuya in a
way that truly exemplifies what friendship is all about.
"When I was young and doing business with Bao Shuya, I often took a larger share of the profits, yet he never
called me greedy because he understood my poverty.
I once led him into a failing business venture, causing him trouble, but he didn't consider me petty, knowing that
success and failure are part of life. Though I repeatedly entered and withdrew from government service,
he never deemed me incompetent, recognizing that luck wasn't on my side.
Moreover, despite fleeing the battlefield several times, he didn't call me a coward, knowing I had an elderly
mother to care for. It is my parents who gave birth to me, but it is Bao Shuya who truly understands me."
This renowned friendship, known as "Guan Bao Zhijiao," is a reflection worth pondering in today's world,
where trust and loyalty seem to be dwindling.
When planning to invite friends to my mother's birthday, I found myself only contacting two high school friends
and one university friend. Due to long periods of work in the provinces and overseas, there had been little
interaction with friends, making it awkward to reach out suddenly for my mother's birthday.
My younger sibling's friends had already arrived, gathering around to greet my mother and making a lively
scene in one corner of the room.
(Out of sight,Out of mind)"란 말처럼 갑자기 외로움이 밀려온다.
There’s a saying that friendship is like a mountain path—if you don't tread it often, it becomes overgrown.
"Out of sight, out of mind," as they say, and a sudden sense of loneliness washed over me.
My university friend Kyung-bae appears at the door, his shoulders slumped. His hair is nearly gone, with only a
few gray strands remaining.
The quote from the Analects of Confucius, "Youpeng ziyaunfanglai, buyue lehu?" comes to mind, which means,
"Is it not a joy to have friends come from afar?" This is a passage I learned in high school and often use when
drinking with friends—it's truly a beautiful sentence.
Soon after, my friends Young-chul and In-ho arrive. Young-chul has been a friend since middle school.
He lost his father in the second year of middle school, and his mother passed away a few years ago,
so he has experienced life's hardships much earlier than I did. He always advised me to be filial to my parents
while they were alive. In-ho comes from a long line of Catholics and is such a genuinely kind person that
he could live without the law.
Watching my mother's friends, I realize that men's friendships are just as strong as theirs. Reflecting on friends
who have drifted into memory, I wondered how many would stay by my side until I was eighty.
Yet, even 25 years later, my friends remain by my side, and I am a fortunate person.
I remember another saying, "If people don’t recognize you and you don’t feel frustrated, isn’t that a mark of a gentleman?" I am grateful to my mother's friends who have shown me the true essence of friendship.
I hope to share such lasting friendships with my own friends until we are a hundred years old.
