뉴욕 한국의 날 행사

 

 

이번 미국 조지아 구금 사태로 인하여 미국의 위상은 시궁창으로 떨어졌고 예전 부터 예의 없고 무례하고

무식한 트럼프를 그래도 미국을 이끄는 대통령임을 감안하여 대접을 해 주었더니 한국을 대하는 태도가

안하무인의 경지를 뛰어넘어 조폭들도 안쓰는 저속하고 건방진 말투가 무척 거슬리게 들린다.

 

With the recent detention incident in Georgia, the reputation of the United States has plummeted.

Although Trump has always been seen as rude and ignorant, he was still treated with the respect due to

a leader of the United States. However, his attitude towards Korea went beyond arrogance, with a tone

that even gangsters wouldn't use, sounding incredibly offensive.

 

수 많은 미국 대통령을 지켜 보았지만 어느 미국 초등학교에서 도대체 어떻게 교육을 받았길래 사람같지

않은 행동을 얼굴색 하나도 바꾸지 않고 자연스럽게 할수 있는지 말문이 막힌다.

 

Having observed numerous U.S. presidents, it's baffling to think about what kind of education one must

have received in any American elementary school to act so inhumanely without even flinching.

 

자기의 미련하고 바보같은 지시로 선량한 대다수의 미국인을 욕보이며 실업자로 만든 그의 행보에 박수를

보낸다. 

 

Applause to his track record of embarrassing the majority of decent Americans and turning them into the

unemployed with his foolish and idiotic directives.

 

트럼프 대통령 골수 지지층인 ‘마가(MAGA·미국을 다시 위대하게)’를 '마타(MATA- Make America Terrible 

Again: 미국을 다시 망가지게)로 만든 그들의 업적은 미국 역사에 길이 오점으로 남을 것이다.

 

The achievements of his staunch supporters, the "MAGA" (Make America Great Again) crowd, who have

now turned it into "MATA" (Make America Terrible Again), will remain a lasting stain in American history. 

 

실제 트럼프 대통령은 5일 백악관 취재진 문답에서 현대차 배터리 공장 건설 현장을 겨냥한 대규모 이민

단속에 대해 “내 생각에 그들은 불법 체류자였고 ICE는 자기 할 일을 한 것”이라고 말했으니 염라대왕에게 

시뻘건 집게로 혀를 뽑힐 엄청난 거짓말도 서슴치 않는 무서운 짐승이다.

 

During a Q&A session at the White House on the 5th, President Trump addressed the large-scale immigration

raid targeting the Hyundai battery plant construction site. He remarked, "I think they were illegal immigrants,

and ICE was doing its job." This statement highlights his willingness to make bold claims, which some might

liken to fearsome behavior that even a mythical figure like the Grim Reaper would find shocking. 

 

어쩌다 우리가 알던 우방국 미국이 이렇게 망가져 가는지 도대체 알 수가 없다.

망가져가는 미국을 다시 살린다며 대한민국 국민을 속죄양으로 삼아 조지아주 남동부 폭스턴에 위치한

ICE 구금시설에 감금한 그는 반드시 자기자신도 폭스턴 감옥에서 죄값을 치를 것 같은 예감이 든다.

 

It's perplexing how the United States, once a close ally we knew well, seems to be deteriorating.

The notion of "reviving" a declining America by using the Korean people as scapegoats, and detaining them in

the ICE facility in Folkston, Georgia, raises concerns.

There's a sense of inevitability that he might also face justice in the same Folkston prison. 

 

트럼프의 어설픈 'MAGA' 로 인하여 대한민국이 반만 년의 기나긴 잠에서 깨어나 세계 각국이 우러러보는

도덕국가로서 우뚝서는 계기가 되었으며 홍익인간의 정신으로 세계를 이끄는 선진국가로 발돋음 할 징조

가 보이는 듯하여 기분이 좋아진다.

 

Trump's clumsy "MAGA" approach seems to have awakened Korea from its long slumber spanning over five

thousand years. It has become an opportunity for Korea to rise as a moral nation admired by the world.

With the spirit of "Hongik Ingan," which means to broadly benefit humanity, Korea appears poised to advance

as a leading country guiding the world. This prospect is quite uplifting. 

 

30여년 전 캐나다에서 그당시 개발도상국이던 대한민국이 자랑스럽게 느껴진 일이 생각난다.

 

Reflecting on a moment from over 30 years ago in Canada, I recall feeling a deep sense of pride in Korea,

which was then a developing nation.

 

95 년인가 김영삼대통령이 캐나다 토론토 및 오타와를 방문한 적이 있었다. 그 대통령 전세기가 안전하게

공항에 착륙 및 이륙할 수 있도록 돕기위하여 뉴욕에서 오타와로 출장을 갔다.

 

In 1995, President Kim Young-sam visited Toronto and Ottawa in Canada. I was tasked with traveling from

New York to Ottawa to ensure that the presidential aircraft could safely land and take off at the airport.

모든 언론이 집중된 대통령 전세기이고 보니 보퉁 긴장이 되는 것이 아니다. 비행중 또는 지상에서 만에 하나

발생될 수도 있는 긴급한 상황에 대비하여 철저한 비행전 점검이 필수적이었다.

 

Given the intense media attention on the presidential flight, it was naturally a situation filled with tension.

A thorough pre-flight inspection was crucial to prepare for any potential emergency situations that could arise

either in the air or on the ground.

 

​에어 캐나다 항공기를 타고 오타와로 출발하기로 하고 뉴욕 라과디아 공항으로 나갔다. 선진 항공사에서는

정장을 하지 않는 항공사 직원에게는 탑승거절을 할 수도 있었기에 정장을 하고 여권을 다시한번 확인하고

카운터에 가서 발권을 요청했으나 좌석이 없다며 기다려 보라며 정중히 거절을 한다.

 

I headed to New York's LaGuardia Airport to catch an Air Canada flight to Ottawa.

Knowing that premier airlines might deny boarding to staff not dressed in formal attire, I made sure to wear a

suit and double-checked my passport. However, when I approached the counter to request my ticket,

I was politely informed that there were no available seats and was asked to wait.

빨리 도착하여 현지 기상특성 또는 활주로 방향 및 유도로 등 공항정보를 미리 확인하여 본사에 보고를

해야하는데 좌석이 없다하여 난감하던중 출발시간이 5분이 지나서야 내이름을 부르며 탑승을 서두르라고

한다.

 

Arriving early was crucial to gather information about local weather conditions, runway directions, and taxiways

to report back to headquarters. However, without a seat, I was in a difficult position.

Just five minutes past the scheduled departure time, I heard my name being called, urging me to board the

flight quickly.

다행이다 싶어 출발장을 달려나가니 우리나라 처럼 버스가 보이지않아 두리번 거리는데 공항직원이 "오타와?"

하면서 손을 들어 가르키는 곳을 보니 저 멀리 조그만 비행기가 움추려 서있다.

Feeling relieved, I hurried out of the departure area but noticed there wasn't a bus shuttle like we have at home.

As I glanced around, an airport staff member asked, "Ottawa?" and pointed in the direction where I saw a small

aircraft waiting in the distance.

 

"아니! 저 조그만 비행기도 캐나다를 가나?" 하면서 가까이 가보니 쌍발 소형 프로펠러 항공기이다.

비행기 입구에는 남승무원이 어서오라며 인사를 하는데 탑승을 해보니 좌석이 24-5 석 뿐이 안되는 것 같다.

 

"Really? Is that small plane going to Canada?" I thought as I approached and realized it was a twin-engine

propeller aircraft. At the entrance, a male flight attendant welcomed me aboard, and upon entering,

I noticed there were only about 24-25 seats.

그 당시에 가장 작은 소형기는 주로 목포나 여수 등 지방의 작은 공항에 투입되는 F100 이란 항공기인데

그래도 승객은 109 명이나 탑승할 수 있었다.

At that time, the smallest aircraft typically used for regional airports like Mokpo or Yeosu was the Fokker 100,

which could still accommodate up to 109 passengers. 

 

평소에 F100 도 작다고 생각하던 나로서는 처음 타보는 이 조그만 프로펠러 항공기가 여간 불안한 것이

아니었다. 창가쪽으로 자리를 잡고 않아서 시계를 보니 출발시간보다 10 여분이 더 지난 것 같다.

 

Having always considered the F100 to be small, I felt quite uneasy boarding this tiny propeller plane for the

first time. I took a seat by the window, and when I checked my watch, it seemed that we were already more

than 10 minutes past the scheduled departure time.

그제서야 문을 닫고 시동을 거는데 오른쪽 엔진에서 시커먼 연기가 나면서 "크르릉" 소리와 함께 프로펠러가

돌아가는데 왠지 선풍기 날개보다도 힘이 없는 것 같아 불안해하는데 아니다 다를까 잠시후 엔진점검으로

출발이 지연된다는 안내 방송이 나온다.

 

As the doors finally closed and the engines started, I noticed black smoke coming from the right engine,

accompanied by a "clunk" sound as the propeller began to turn. It seemed less powerful than a fan, which

made me uneasy. Sure enough, an announcement soon followed, informing us that departure would be

delayed due to an engine check. 

​

"선진항공사도 지연이 많이 되는구나" 하며 주변승객을 살펴보니 한가롭게 신문을 보며 여유만만이다.

잠시후 엔진점검이 끝났다며 시동을 걸어 유도로로 나가는데 비행기가 작아서 그런지 택시처럼 "팽"하며

달려나간다.

 

"Even advanced airlines experience delays," I thought, as I observed the other passengers around me.

They seemed relaxed, leisurely reading newspapers without a hint of concern.

Shortly after, the announcement came that the engine check was complete, and as we taxied to the runway,

the small plane accelerated with a quick "zoom," reminiscent of a taxi.

활주로에 들어서더니 얼마 달리지 않아 금방 떠오른다. 프로펠러 돌아가는 소리에 귀를 귀울이다가

"써(Sir!)" 하는 소리에 돌아다보니 남승무원이 콜라를 따라주며 피넛땅콩 한봉지를 권한다.

 

As we entered the runway, the plane lifted off quickly after a short run. I was listening intently to the hum of

the propellers when I heard a "Sir!" Turning around, I saw the male flight attendant offering me a drink of

cola and a bag of peanuts.

차창을 통해 아래를 보니 그림같이 아담하고 예쁜 집들이 마을을 이루어 옹기종기 모여 있는데 군데 군데

파란 풀장이 눈에 많이 띤다. 정말 그림같다.

Looking out the window, I saw quaint, picturesque houses clustered together to form charming little villages.

Here and there, blue swimming pools caught my eye, adding a splash of color to the scene.

It truly looked like a painting. 

 

도착후 자동차로 공항에 가는 도로변에 태극기와 캐나다기가 정겹게 펄럭이고 있다. 공항관계자도 태극기를

처음 보았는데 멋있다고해서 태극기에 새겨진 오묘한 그림을 설명하려는데 음양은 어찌저찌 설명이 되는데

팔괘는 나 자신이 이해를 못하니 답답할 다름이다.

 

Upon arrival, I noticed the Taegukgi (Korean flag) and the Canadian flag warmly fluttering along the roadside

leading to the airport. An airport official, seeing the Taegukgi for the first time, remarked on its beauty,

prompting me to explain the intricate designs on the flag.

While I could somewhat explain the yin-yang symbol, I found myself at a loss with the trigrams, as I didn't

fully understand them myself.

아무튼 태극기는 일반 다른 나라의 국기와 틀린 심오한 철학을 담은 국기라 얼버무리며 캐나다 국기에 그려져

있는 단풍잎이 참 예쁘다며 무슨 의미가 있느냐 물어보려는 차에 공항 앞에 벌써 도착해 있었다.

회의를 한 후 전세기가 주기할 장소를 확인하고 공항내 시설을 점검하였다.

 

The Taegukgi, unlike many other national flags, embodies a profound philosophy, I explained, somewhat

vaguely. I then complimented the Canadian flag's maple leaf for its beauty and was about to inquire about

its meaning when we arrived at the airport.

다음날 전세기 도착시간에 즈음하여 관제탑에 올라가서 우리 비행기를 기다리는데 그곳 직원이 묻는다.

기종이 무엇이냐고.. 보잉 747-400 이라고 하니까 자기는 본적이 없다며 얼마나 큰지 기대가 된단다.

"아니 완전 촌놈 아냐? 캐나다 같이 큰 나라에서 미국에서 만든 보잉 747-400 을 보지 못했다니.."

 

As the chartered flight's arrival time approached, I went up to the control tower to await our aircraft.

One of the staff members asked about the aircraft type, and when I mentioned it was a Boeing 747-400,

they expressed excitement, saying they had never seen one before and were eager to witness its size. 

 

I found it surprising, thinking, "How can someone from a large country like Canada have never seen an

American-made Boeing 747-400?" It seemed unusual.

잠시후 ATC MONITOR (관제기관과 항공기간 통화하는 내용을 들을 수 있는 장치) 를 들으니 자랑스런

대한민국 대통령 전세기가 관제기관과 통화하는 내용이 들린다.

 

Soon after, through the ATC monitor (a device that allows listening to communications between air traffic

control and aircraft), I could hear the proud communication between the control tower and the South

Korean presidential charter.

서쪽 하늘을 주시하기 수분 후 파란 하늘색의 거대한 새가 두 날개를 활짝 펼쳐 활주로로 접근한다.
관제사들이 탄성을 지르며 "Wonderful!" 하며 착륙하는 모습을 좀더 가까이 보려고 창문 쪽으로 다가선다.

 

A few minutes later, after keeping a close watch on the western sky, a massive bird with a sky-blue hue

spread its wings wide, approaching the runway. The air traffic controllers exclaimed "Wonderful!" as they

moved closer to the windows for a better view of the landing.

외국에 나가면 모두가 애국자가 된다던데... 새삼스레 파란 날개에 새겨진 태극마크에 가슴이 뿌듯해온다.

서서히 비행기는 주기장으로 접근하여 문이 열리면 바로 빨간 카페트를 밟고 행사장으로 나갈 수 있도록

어제 미리 표시해둔 장소에 정확히 정지한다.

 

It's often said that being abroad turns everyone into a patriot, and indeed, seeing the Taeguk emblem on

the sky-blue wings fills my heart with pride. As the aircraft slowly approaches the designated parking area,

it stops precisely at the spot marked the day before, ensuring that as soon as the door opens,

the dignitaries can step onto the red carpet and proceed directly to the event.

잠시후 영접관이 기내로 올라가 우리 대통령을 안내하여 스텝을 내려오자마자 몇몇 관계자와 악수를 하더니

경호원에 싸여 차를 타고 공항을 빠져나가는데 경찰 네 다섯 차량이 길을 인도한다.

 

Shortly after, the welcoming official boarded the aircraft to escort our president down the steps.

Upon disembarking, the president shook hands with a few officials, then, surrounded by security personnel,

entered a vehicle to leave the airport. A convoy of four or five police cars led the way.

다음날 서울로 귀환하는날 서울공항 날씨 및 항로상에 문제점 여부를 확인후 비행계획서및 기타 서류를 기장

에게 전달하고 브리핑을 해주었다. 모든 준비가 끝나고 다시 비행기는 서울로 힘차게 떠올랐다.

 

The next day, before returning to Seoul, I checked the weather at Seoul Airport and along the flight path for

any potential issues. After confirming everything was clear, I prepared the flight plan and other necessary

documents, which I then handed over to the captain along with a briefing. With all preparations complete,

the aircraft soared confidently into the sky, heading back to Seoul.

맨 처음 미국에 도착하여 한때 비행기 소리만 나면 하늘을 쳐다보며 저 비행기를 타면 한국에 갈수 있을까 하며

비행기가 사라진 방향을 한없이 바라보았던 적이 있었는데....

 

When I first arrived in the United States, there were times when I'd hear the sound of an airplane and look up,

wondering if that plane could take me back to Korea. I would gaze endlessly in the direction it disappeared.

갑자기 고향생각이 나는 것은 왠일인지. 파란 하늘색의 전세기가 꼬리날개로 부터 남기고 간 하얀 연기가 바람에

흩어져 사라질 때 까지 그자리를 떠날 수 없었다.

 

Suddenly, thoughts of home flooded my mind. As the sky-blue chartered flight left a trail of white vapor from

its tail, I found myself unable to leave the spot until it vanished into the wind.
