SIU(Southern Illinois University) 기숙사인 Southern Hill 에 처음 입주하여 학교 구경을
When we first moved into Southern Hills, the dormitory at Southern Illinois University (SIU),
my wife and I set out to explore the campus.
(Thompson Lake)
Located in Carbondale, this university is considered one of the ten most beautiful places
in Illinois. With expansive green lawns, lush forests, and the enchanting 40-acre
Thompson Lake, SIU truly resembles a picturesque, fairytale-like university.
After moving into the dormitory, one evening I was startled by a knock on the door.
When I opened it, I found a well-built young white student who glanced around the room
and asked which country I was from.
When I mentioned that I was from Korea, he said he had never heard of the country and
questioned whether I was here illegally, looking me up and down.
He then claimed to be from the FBI and asked to see my passport.
Finding the situation absurd, I sarcastically replied, "If you're FBI, then I'm CIA," and asked
him how old he was. After all, what FBI agent would have the time to visit a university
dormitory just to ask for a passport?
He seemed like one of those Trump-like students steeped in white supremacy, looking down
on Asians. It appeared he might have come over just to assert dominance after seeing us
move in.
I told him that I had nothing to discuss with him and asked him to leave, mentioning that I
would call the police. He challenged me to do so, saying that I would be deported and that
this was going to be a "Big Big Problem," insisting that I should return to my country
immediately.
Ah, America can be quite a peculiar place! Just as I picked up my phone to call the police,
this young guy, trying to intimidate someone much older, left with a parting shot:
"Watch your back! I'll make sure to get you out of here."
A few days later, as I was heading to school and approached the parking lot, I noticed
something strange about my car. Upon closer inspection, I discovered that the tires were
deflated and the car had sunk down.
All four tires had been slashed on the sidewalls with something sharp, like a razor blade.
I suspected the culprit might be the person who had threatened me before, but without
knowing where he lived, I felt frustrated and had to replace the tires with new ones.
Anticipating that something like this might happen again, I asked the fellow international
students living nearby to keep an eye on my car and to watch out for each other's vehicles
as well.

One day, just before Thanksgiving, someone knocked on the door. Initially, I thought it might
be that same person from before, but when I opened the door, it was an elderly Chinese woman.
She asked if I was from Korea and if she could come in to ask a few questions.
I made a cup of ginseng tea for her and we started talking. She explained that a friend of hers,
a Korean grandmother, had been taken by the police and needed help.
As I listened, it turns out that near the apartment complex, this Korean grandmother had been
looking after her grandchild and had touched a peanut.
"Peanut, you say...? Isn't a peanut just a nut?" I was puzzled about why the police would take
her away for touching a peanut her grandson was eating. As I asked more questions,
I realized that "peanut" was a euphemism for the little boy's private parts.
The Korean grandmother, finding her grandson adorable, playfully said, "Let's eat your little 'gochu'
(a playful term for private parts in Korean)!" and touched him. Unfortunately, a neighbor
misinterpreted this as an act of molestation and, true to the country's reputation for vigilance,
reported it to the police.
In a country where couples might share a kiss on campus lawns without hesitation, the heightened
sensitivity around interactions with children likely stems from the unfortunate prevalence of child
molestation cases. This awareness leads to a cautious and protective approach when it comes to
children's safety.
Having witnessed such interactions often during my childhood, I could understand the situation,
but I realized how it could easily be misinterpreted by foreigners. So, I offered the Chinese
grandmother a ride and headed to the campus police station.
Upon arrival, I saw the young boy crying and wanting to go to his grandmother, while the female
officer reassured him that his grandmother was safe and led him to another room.
Despite my explanations, since I wasn't directly related to the grandmother, they insisted on
contacting her son to take responsibility.
The grandmother, understandably upset, was saying, "Why are they taking my grandchild away?
Give the baby back," and lamenting, "What a terrible country," as she was nearly beside herself
with worry. Knowing that arguing with the police, who were unfamiliar with Korean customs,
might not be beneficial, I asked for her son's phone number and gave him a call.
After explaining the situation, I informed them that they should come to the police station.
They agreed and hung up. Shortly after, the son and his wife arrived, provided explanations,
and filled out some paperwork. They then hugged their son and helped their mother, expressing
gratitude and thanking me warmly.
The Chinese grandmother who had come with me mentioned that thanks to my help, the situation
was resolved. The family invited me over for a meal at their home. It seemed the couple worked
at a cleaning company, and they had entrusted their son to the grandmother, which unfortunately
led to this incident.
I politely declined the dinner invitation and headed home. In American society, the laws are quite
strict about leaving children alone at home without a guardian.
Doing so can lead to serious consequences, including the risk of losing custody, so it's crucial to
never leave a child unsupervised.
When I got home, my aunt from Chicago called, suggesting that it must be lonely during Thanksgiving
and urging me to visit next year. She even told me to buy a turkey and insisted that I should at least
come up to see her next time. Looking around my neighborhood, many international students had
already left to visit their relatives or parents.
The news mentioned that thousands of turkeys meet their end around Thanksgiving, which might be
why the White House ceremonially pardons one turkey each year. This tradition perhaps serves as
a lighthearted gesture amidst the holiday festivities.
In the American financial sector, there's a humorous tradition around Thanksgiving where they select
the person deemed to have had the most negative impact on the stock market that year as the
"Thanksgiving Turkey of the Year." At one point, Alan Greenspan, the former Chairman of the
Federal Reserve, was chosen. I wonder who it will be this year; perhaps Donald Trump might be
a contender.
Thanksgiving in the United States is somewhat akin to Korea's Chuseok. While Koreans give thanks
to their ancestors through rituals and enjoy making and eating songpyeon (rice cakes), Americans
typically attend church services and then gather with family and close friends to share a meal
featuring turkey.
It's been over a decade since I left the United States, but back then, in New York, families affected
by the terror attacks were reportedly compensated with around $100,000 per household before
Thanksgiving. Given the recent detainment situation in Georgia, it would be appropriate to pay
around $1 million in compensation to our technicians. However, knowing Trump's disregard for
what is right, it's unlikely that he would do so.
In an era where the "Trump syndrome" has turned allies into foes, one wonders how many nations
will endure this challenge. Yet, the full moon of Chuseok will shine impartially, even over Trump's head.
As the next Chuseok approaches, who will share in the brilliance of the bright moon?
