"They rolled the small rice cakes in their palms,
Then matched each one with the lips of shells using their fingertips.
Placing them upright on a golden tray, they looked like a thousand peaks carved out.
When picked up with jade chopsticks, they floated like a crescent moon."

This poem, depicting the iconic Chuseok dish, songpyeon, in such a vivid

and dreamlike manner, is by the wandering poet Kim Satgat.

The craftsmanship of his writing leaves one speechless, as it portrays the

manual of making songpyeon more vividly than any TV image from the times

when relatives gathered, shared stories, and made songpyeon together at home

during childhood.

Songpyeon got its name from the pine needles used in its preparation.

Initially called 'Songbyeong' using the characters for pine tree '송(松)' and

rice cake '병(餠)', it gradually became known as songpyeon over time

In the past, people would collect healthy pine needles from the mountains,

wash them thoroughly, lay them on the bottom of the steamer, place the

songpyeon on top, and steam them with care.

I remember sharing them with family and relatives."

Especially among women, there seemed to be an invisible competition over

who could make the prettiest songpyeon.

This may have been driven by the belief that making beautiful songpyeon

would lead to a good marriage.

In the Joseon Dynasty's "Gyuhap Chongseo," a delicacy was referred to as

"Seoktanbyeong" (惜呑餠), meaning it was so delicious that one would

hesitate to swallow it.

The fact that there were as many as 198 types of tteok (Korean rice cakes)

mentioned in the cookbooks of the Joseon era shows how integral these treats

are to Korean culture.

The crescent-shaped songpyeon, as described by Kim Satgat, has a historical

origin tied to the story of the last king of Baekje, King Uija.

In June 656, during the hour of Chuk (丑), the restless King Uija awoke to a

strange wind and chill.

Upon looking around, he saw a pale object from the sky encircling him,

ominously declaring, "Baekje will fall!" before vanishing into the ground beneath

his chamber.

The next day, driven by an uneasy feeling, King Uija dug up the ground where the

strange object had vanished. He discovered a turtle, and upon examining its shell,

found the inscription, "Baekje is a full moon (滿月), and Silla is a half-moon (半月).

" When the king summoned a shaman to interpret this, he was told that Baekje,

being a full moon, was complete and would soon wane. On the other hand, Silla,

as a half-moon, would gradually grow and become a full moon, signifying that

Baekje would fall while Silla would prosper. Angered by this prophecy, the king

executed the shaman.

As the song lyrics "화무십일홍 이고 달도 차면 기우나니" suggest, the rise and fall

of all things follow a cycle.

No flower remains red for ten days, and even a full moon begins to wane the day

after it is full.

This is why the I Ching advises caution when something reaches its peak or

completion. Once you have climbed a high mountain, the only way left is down.

Conversely, when there is no place left to descend, the only path forward is upward,

bringing hope and the promise of progress.

In the remaining days of the Year of the Snake (乙巳年), the heavenly stem

symbolizes beautiful flowers in the forest, while the earthly branch represents the snake.

This suggests a warning: if you recklessly pursue these beautiful flowers, you might be

bitten by a snake hidden in the brush. It teaches us to live beautifully by letting go of

greed and embracing a love of nature.

In the early part of 2025, the energy is symbolized by Eulmok (乙木), which represents

a humble and shy, yet fragile energy. As the year progresses, it transitions into Sa (巳),

representing the fire energy that expands like a flame, signifying Korea's potential to

emerge as a strong nation by the latter part of 2025. This year is seen as a starting

point for Korea's rise as a powerful country

Following this, 2026, represented by Byeongo (丙午), brings both heavenly stem

and earthly branch (지지) energies of fire. This suggests that a small spark ignited in

2025 will become a fierce blaze in 2026, elevating Korea's global stature.

However, with the fire element dominating worldwide, there is concern about potential

conflicts, symbolized by missiles and artillery casting shadows over the sky and earth.

Interestingly, the United States is likened to Baekje, showing signs of waning influence,

much like a full moon, while Korea is compared to Silla, growing from a half-moon to

a full moon, signifying its rise. This optimistic outlook makes the upcoming year even

more anticipated.

Korea is considered a nation of Eulmok (乙木), while the United States is associated with

Gyeonggeum (庚金). According to the principle of "Moksaenghwa" (木生火),

Korea, represented by wood, will support and fuel the fire, embodying sacrifice and service.

This will earn Korea respect from many countries. On the other hand, "Hwageukgeum"

(火克金) suggests that the United States, symbolized by metal, will face challenges,

as metal melts in a hot furnace. Thus, next year could be particularly tough for the U.S.,

marking a period of decline.

Dear readers, close your eyes and envision the coming year of Byeong-o (丙午年).

Can you picture a powerful horse running energetically towards the rising sun in the east?

For our nation, known for its perseverance and patience, I believe the next year will be

more dynamic and hopeful than ever.

Like a crescent moon turning into a full moon, may the songpyeon we enjoy this Chuseok

serve as a nourishing elixir for our people.

I hope that this will lead Korea to become a proud and exemplary great nation admired by

the entire world.

Have a happy Chuseok!
