나비(고양이)의 추억("Nabi's Memories" )

나비와 함께

 

며칠 전 아파트 단지 앞 사잇길로 들어서는데 "소리야! 움직이지 말고

가만히 있어야지?"

하는 소리에 옆을 쳐다보니 유모차 안에 주먹만 한 하얀 강아지가

나오려고 이리저리 움직이고 있었다.

 

A few days ago, as I was entering the side road in front of the apartment

complex, I heard someone say, "Sori! Don't move and stay still, okay?" 

Curious, I looked to the side and saw a small white puppy, about the size

of a fist, trying to get out of a stroller.

아기도 아닌 강아지가 주인 잘 만나 푹신한 고급 유모차 안에서 호강을

하고 있으니 우리나라도 반려견의 대한 인식과 대우가 많이 달라진 것

같다.

 

It wasn't a baby, but a puppy that had found a great owner, enjoying a

plush, high-end stroller. It seems that perceptions and treatment of pets

in our country have changed significantly.

예전 월드컵을 앞두고 한국의 개고기 문화에 대하여 거센 항의를 한

프랑스나 미국은 정말 개의 나라이다.

 

In the past, countries like France and the United States, which strongly

protested against Korea's dog meat culture ahead of the World Cup,

are truly countries of dogs.

 

프랑스가 자랑하는 도시 파리는 20만 마리가 하루에 쏟아내는 개의

배설물이 15톤으로 개들의 오물 수거 및 처리에 연간 1억 프랑

(약 2백30억 원)을 쓰고 있지만 그것도 부족하여 시에서는 15% 밖에

배설물을 처리할 수 없어서 파리의 골목은 개들의 공중변소나 다름이

없다 한다.

 

The city of Paris, which France proudly boasts, faces a unique challenge

with the 20,000 dogs residing there.

 

These dogs produce about 15 tons of waste daily. Despite spending

100 million francs (approximately 23 billion won) annually on collecting

and disposing of dog waste, the city can only manage to handle 15% of it.

As a result, the streets of Paris are practically considered public restrooms

for dogs.

더욱 웃기는 것은 그 배설물을 밟고 미끄러져 병원에 입원하는 사람이

매년 6백50명에 이르고 공공장소에서 오물을 배설한 개 주인에게 최고

3천 프랑의 범칙금을 물리는 법이 있지만 많은 파리 시민들의 넓은

아량(?)으로 별문제가 안되는 모양이다.

 

Even more amusing is the fact that around 650 people are hospitalized

each year after slipping on this waste. There is a fine of up to 3,000 francs

for dog owners who allow their pets to defecate in public places.

However, it seems that many Parisians are quite lenient, as this does not

appear to be a significant issue.

미국에서도 개에 대한 예우가 각별하여 영화 '101 마리 달마시안' 촬영

시에는 영화에 출연하는 모든 개들을 강아지 전용 모텔에 투숙 시켰

으며 모텔 내부에는 공이나 뼈다귀 혹은 리본 등 예쁜 그림으로 치장

하여 개들이 편안히 휴식할 수 있도록 배려를 하였으며 어미 달마시안

'퐁고'와 '퍼디'는 특별한 대접을 받아 위험한 장면이나 굳이 그들이

필요 없는 장면에서는 특별 제작된 대역 인형을 쓰거나 컴퓨터 그래픽

으로 처리를 했다하니 과연 웬만한 사람보다도 더 대접을 받는 상팔자

의 삶을 살아가는 것 같았다.

In the United States, dogs are treated with exceptional care.

During the filming of the movie "101 Dalmatians," all the dogs featured

in the movie were accommodated in a dog-specific motel.

 

The interior of the motel was decorated with beautiful images of balls,

bones, and ribbons to ensure the dogs could rest comfortably.

 

The mother Dalmatian characters, "Pongo" and "Perdy," received special

treatment. For dangerous scenes or those not requiring their presence,

specially designed stand-in dolls or computer graphics were used instead.

It seems like these dogs were living a life of luxury, perhaps even more

pampered than many people. 

 

뉴욕에 살면서도 아이들이 하도 강아지를 사달라고 졸라 어느 날 개들

을 구경하러 동물 보호소를 찾았다.

 

While living in New York, my children kept begging for a puppy,

so one day we decided to visit an animal shelter to look at the dogs.

 

'Animal Shelter(애완동물 보호소)' 라고 하는데 이곳에서는 애완동물

들이 길을 잃거나 버려지는 경우 보호해주고 주인을 찾아주고 입양까지

해주는 곳이다.

 

Animal shelters are places where pets are cared for if they get lost or

abandoned, and they also help find new homes for these animals 

through adoption. 

​

보통 카운티(County)에 한두 군데 이런 보호소가 있는데 지방 신문에

찾아보면 전화번호와 주소가 나와있다.

 

Typically, each county has one or two of these shelters, and you can

find their phone numbers and addresses in the local newspaper.

​

동물 보호소에 들어온 지 7일 이내에는 다른 사람에게 입양될 수 없다

하는데 이는 진짜 주인이 자기 개를 다시 찾을기간을 주는 것이라 한다.

​

When a pet arrives at the shelter, it cannot be adopted by someone

else within the first seven days.

This period allows the original owner a chance to reclaim their pet. 

 

전화를 하니 몇 시까지 오라며 간단한 인터뷰가 있을 거란다.

"아니 강아지 한 마리 데려오는데 무슨 면접..?"

 

When I called, they told me to come by a certain time and mentioned

there would be a brief interview.

I thought, "An interview just to bring home a puppy?" 

 

보통 먼저 와서 마음에 드는 강아지나 고양이를 찜하면 그 사람에게

우선권을 주는데 그 보호소에서도 개나 고양이의 주인으로서 자격이

있는지를 판단하여 입양을 결정하게 된다.

 

When you visit a shelter, you can express interest in a particular dog or

cat, giving you priority for adoption.

However, the shelter staff will evaluate whether you are qualified to be

a pet owner before making the adoption decision.

​

입양을 원하는 사람은 자기의 신상명세서와 거주지 확인서를 지참해야

하는데 세 들어 살게 되면 그 집 주인에게 개를 키워도 좋다는 집주인

허가서를 가져와야 되고 개를 키우는 가정이라면 자기가 키우는 개를

동반해 데리고 가야 한다.

 

그래야 그 개의 영양 상태 및 주인이 대한 태도(꼬리침이나 으르렁)로

주인의 인품을 알 수 있기 때문이라고 한다.

 

To adopt, you need to bring personal identification and proof of residence.

If you rent, you must provide a landlord's permission stating that pets are

allowed.

Additionally, if you already have a dog, you should bring it along to observe

its health and behavior towards you, as this can indicate your suitability as

a pet owner. 

 

먼저 강아지를 보고 싶다 했더니 쇠 창살 우리에 갇혀있는 몇 마리의 개

들을 보여주는데 시커멓고 큰 개들만 있는데 며칠을 굶으며 거리를 방황

했는지 눈빛도 힘이 없고 아이들도 실망한 눈치이다.

 

When we asked to see the puppies, we were shown several dogs in cages.

They were mostly large, black dogs that seemed weak and weary,

possibly from wandering the streets for days without food.

The children seemed disappointed by the sight. 

 

예쁜 개가 매일 들어오는 것도 아니고 예쁜 개를 누가 버리겠는가?

나중에 다시 오겠다며 떼를 쓰는 아이들을 달래서 그곳을 나왔다.

 

It isn't every day that a cute dog arrives at the shelter, and after all,

who would abandon such a lovely pet? I

managed to calm the kids, who insisted on returning later, and we

left the shelter

 

내가 초등학교 3학년 때 무렵 우리 집에는 '케리'라는 셰퍼드가 있었는데

내가 학교 갈 때면 그 큰 개집을 질질 끌며 나에게 앞발을 들고 컹컹거리

며 꼬리를 치며 자기도 데려다 달라고 애원을 하곤 했다.

 

When I was in third grade, we had a Shepherd named "Kerry" at home.

Every time I went to school, Kerry would drag his large doghouse, stand

on his hind legs, bark, and wag his tail, pleading to come along with me. 

 

그래서 개끈을 풀어 놓고 마당을 뛰어놀게 하면 화단에 들어가 애써 가꿔

놓은 예쁜 꽃들을 짓밟아 놓고 마당 한가운데 수돗가 옆의 세숫대야나

장독 뚜껑을 뒤집어 깨 놓기 일수여서 어머니께서 개 풀어놓는 것을 싫어

하셨다.

 

Whenever I let him off the leash to play in the yard, he would often trample

the carefully tended flowers and knock over and break the washbasin or

the lid of a jar by the faucet in the middle of the yard.

Because of this, my mother disliked letting him roam freely.

​

그러던 어느 날 등교길에 기척이 없어 개집을 들여다보니 '케리'가 거품을

물고 쓰러져 있는 것이 아닌가?

 

One day, as I was heading to school, I noticed an eerie silence and peered

into the doghouse, only to find Kerry collapsed with foam around his mouth.

 

"케~리! 케~리! 일어나! 죽으면 안 돼!" 하면서 목이 터져라 불렀지만 한번

감은 케리의 눈은 열릴 줄 몰랐다.

 

"Ke-rry! Ke-rry! Wake up! You can't die!" I shouted until my voice was hoarse,

but Kerry's eyes remained closed.

 

"엄마! 큰일났어 케리가 죽으려고 해" 하면서 병원에 데려가서 살리려고

했지만 벌써 몸은 싸늘히 굳어 있었다.

 

"Mom! Something's wrong; Kerry's dying!" I cried, and we rushed him to the

vet in a desperate attempt to save him, but his body was already cold and

stiff.

​

그 당시만 해도 쥐가 유난히 많아 학교에서는 쥐를 잡아 쥐꼬리를 가져오면

무슨 상인 가를 줄 정도로 쥐 퇴치 운동에 한창 이였으며 쥐약을 먹고 죽은

개가 한 반에 한 두집은 있을 정도로 두 달에 한 번 꼴로 쥐약을 놓아야 했다.

 

Back in those days, there was an abundance of rats, and schools were

actively engaged in rat control campaigns, even offering rewards for bringing

in rat tails. Unfortunately, it wasn't uncommon for a dog in the neighborhood

to die from rat poison.

Every couple of months, it was necessary to place rat poison to keep the

rodent population under control. 

​

몇 달 후 친척으로부터 받은 6 개월짜리 강아지도 도둑이 던진 독이 든 고깃

덩이에 목숨을 잃어야 했고 저녁 가마니에 죽은 강아지를 싸서 동생과 함께

동네 '낙산'에 올라가 웅덩이를 파고 묻어주고 나뭇가지로 십자가를 세워

주었던 기억이 있었건만.

 

A few months later, we received a six-month-old puppy from a relative,

but sadly, it fell victim to a poisoned piece of meat thrown by a thief.

My sibling and I wrapped the puppy in a straw mat and took it to a local hill

called "Naksan," where we dug a hole, buried it, and marked the spot with

a cross made from tree branches. It was a memory that lingered with us. 

​

그런 어느 날 퇴근하여 집에 들어왔는데 어디선가 '야옹'하는 소리가 갸날

프게 들려왔다.

 

Then one day, as I returned home from work, I heard a faint "meow" coming

from somewhere. 

 

소리 나는 곳을 바라다보니 대나무로 만든 바구니에 수줍게 옹크리고 앉아

나를 봐 달란다. 알고 보니 아내가 '한 아름 식품점' 앞에서 어느 아주머니

한테 얻었다 하는데 하얀 털에 까만 얼룩이 점점이 박힌 귀여운 고양이였다.

 

Looking in the direction of the sound, I saw a shy little kitten nestled in a

bamboo basket, seemingly asking for attention.

 

It turned out that my wife had received the kitten, with its white fur and black

spots, from a lady in front of a local grocery store. It was adorable.

​

아이들은 벌써 우유를 따른 접시를 고양이 입에다 대여 주고 입가 수염에는

하얀 우유가 서너 방울 매달려 있는데 그 모습이 그렇게 예쁠 수 없었다.

"고양이도 이쁘구나! 그래서 고양이를 키우는 사람이 많은 모양이구나!"

 

The children were already holding a dish of milk up to the kitten's mouth,

and a few drops of white milk clung to the whiskers around its mouth.

It was such an adorable sight. 

​ "Wow, cats really are cute! No wonder so many people have them as pets,"

I thought to myself.

 

고양이 식구가 늘자 용변이 문제였다.

세 들어 사는데 카펫에다 쉬야나 응가를 하면 집 주인은 물론 우리 식구

에게도 위생에 문제가 될까봐 고양이가 잠잘 폭신한 침구와 고양이

장난감, 캣푸드 등을 사 왔다.

 

Having a new cat in the family brought up some challenges, particularly

with its bathroom habits. Since we were renting, we were concerned about

the potential hygiene issues if the cat urinated or defecated on the carpet.

To address this, we bought some cozy bedding, toys, and cat food for our

new feline friend. 

 

며칠간은 우리 침대 밑에다가 쉬야를 하는 등 문제를 일으키더니 목욕탕

한편에 야옹이 전용 화장실(상자)를 만들어 주고 훈련을 시켰더니 용변이

마려우면 우리에게 화장실 문을 열어달라고 화장실 문을 긁기도 했다.

 

Initially, the kitten caused a bit of trouble, like peeing under our bed.

But once we set up a dedicated litter box in the bathroom and trained it,

the kitten began to signal its need by scratching at the bathroom door,

asking us to let it in. 

​

'나비(고양이 이름)'는 우리 아이 침대에서 잠자기를 좋아했는데 아이들이

학교에서 돌아오면 아이들 장롱 위로 올라가 자리를 양보하곤 했다.

 

Our cat, named "Nabi," loved sleeping on our children's bed but would

move up to the top of the wardrobe to give them space as soon as they

returned from school.

 

맨 처음 손바닥 만했던 나비는 아이들이 너무 많이 음식을 주었는지 몇

개월 만에 커다란 고양이로 자라났으며 가끔가다 창문 밖으로 나가 외박

도하고 돌아오는 적이 많아졌다.

 

Initially, Nabi was just the size of my palm, but after a few months—and

perhaps due to the kids giving her too much food—she grew into a large

cat. She began to venture outside through the window more often,

sometimes staying out overnight.

​

아기 고양이일 적에는 목욕시키는 것이 수월했는데 다 커버리니 목욕을

시키려 해도 말도 안 듣고 연애를 하는지 창문 밖에서 야옹거리는 시커먼

남자친구가 보이는가 싶으면 한동안은 안 보이는 것이었다.

 

When she was a kitten, giving her a bath was relatively easy.

However, as she grew, she became less cooperative during bath time.

Occasionally, a mysterious black tomcat would appear outside the window,

and whenever that happened, Nabi would disappear for a while, perhaps

off on some romantic adventure. 

​

그러던 중 서울로 돌아갈 날이 얼마 남지 않아 어느 직원가족에게 고양이

를 부탁했다.

 

As the time to return to Seoul approached, we arranged for a colleague's

family to take care of Nabi. 

 

나중에 사실을 안 아이들이 한국까지 나비를 데려가자며 울고불고했지만

고양이를 위해서도 그렇고 아이들 공부에도 문제가 있을 것 같아 한국에

가면 예쁜 강아지 사 준다고 약속했으나 결국은 이루어지지 않았다.

 

When the children found out, they were heartbroken and pleaded to bring

Nabi to Korea. However, considering the well-being of the cat and the

children's studies, we promised them a beautiful puppy in Korea—

though that promise was never fulfilled.

​

기회가 되면 사주고 싶었지만 아내는 털 빠지고 응가 처리 때문에 여태껏

반대를 했고 "너희들 시집 장가가서 수십 마리건 수백 마리건 마음대로

키우라!"라는 소리에 아이들은 그 당시에는 불만을 표시했지만 막상 시집

장가를 다 가서 애들까지 낳아서 그 꼬마아이들이 강아지나 고양이를

사달라고 조르고 있으나 아직이다.

 

I wanted to get them a pet when the opportunity arose, but my wife

opposed it due to concerns about shedding and cleaning up after

the pet.

 

She would say, "Raise as many pets as you want when you have your

own place!" Although the children were unhappy about it back then,

they have since grown up, married, and even had their own children who

now ask for puppies or kittens. Yet, it still hasn't happened.

​

귀국 후 어느 날 후배를 통해 나비 얘기를 물으니 몇 달을 참지 못하고 그

동네 건달하고 눈이 맞아 드디어 가출을 했단다.

 

After returning to Korea, I heard from a colleague about Nabi.

It turns out she couldn't resist the allure of a local tomcat and eventually

ran away. 

 

벌써 미국을 떠난 지 수십 년이 넘었으니 이 세상에는 없겠지만 나비의

증손자, 증손녀들도 이젠 할아버지 할머니가 되어 미국 어느 집 난롯가

에서 단잠을 자고 있겠지.

 

It's been several decades since we left the U.S., so Nabi is likely no longer

with us.

Still, I like to imagine that her great-grandchildren are now grandparents

themselves, perhaps cozily napping by a fireplace in some American home.
