The question of "If someone asks why you live..." is, at least
by the age of forty, a curiosity that everyone ponders deeply
at least once. I believe it's an inherent human trait to reflect
on this.
No one thinks they were born into this world for no reason.
This is evident when we see some people born into wealthy
families, living a life without worries, while others are born
into poverty, struggling for their daily meals.
Such disparities can be observed around us, even without
media reports.
Throughout life, we've all heard the phrase "Oh, my fate!"
so often that the word 'fate' has become very familiar to us.
It's a silent tear, muttered unconsciously, when we feel
insignificant, when our plans fail, or when misfortune
follows misfortune.
In life, everyone experiences four fundamental sufferings
known as Sa-Ku (四苦). From the moment we are born,
we are caught in the net of birth, aging, sickness, and
death, struggling until we pass away.
This is considered the fate of humanity.
But is that all there is? In addition to these basic sufferings,
there are another four that add to our burdens, making our
short lives full of ups and downs. As a popular song lyric goes,
"Ah! What should I do?" We lament while looking at the sky,
but the heavens offer no response, only maintaining a cold
silence.
The phrase Sa-Ku-Pal-Ku (四苦八苦) suggests that if we
meet four sufferings (Sa-Ku), we should be able to sell
eight sufferings. However, we can neither buy nor sell
these burdens; instead, we carry them throughout our
lives. The universe’s indifference shows no pity or tears.
The additional four sufferings, combined with birth, aging,
sickness, and death (生老病死), are referred to as the
Pal-Ku (八苦). These include:
The pain of separation from loved ones
This suffering comes from being apart from those we love.
The pain of encountering those we dislike
This suffering arises when we must face those we harbor ill
feelings toward.
The pain of not obtaining what we desire
This suffering is about the frustration of unfulfilled desires.
The suffering from the imbalance of mental and physical
This suffering arises from the clinging to and imbalance of the
five aggregates.
Understanding these sufferings can make it seem like there is
no aspect of life without pain. This is why Buddha, upon his
enlightenment, is said to have pointed one hand to the sky
and the other to the ground, proclaiming:
Translated, this means: "In heaven and on earth, I alone am
the honored one. The three realms are all suffering; I shall
bring peace to them."
Initially, this statement might seem arrogant or lacking in humility,
as if Buddha were claiming superiority. However, the deeper
meaning is that each being has the potential for enlightenment
and the capacity to transcend suffering.
However, one cannot judge by looking at only one aspect.
After reading various sutras expounded by Buddha Shakyamuni,
I came to understand. His statement of being honored alone
meant that upon enlightenment, Buddha realized that all
sentient beings possess the same radiant Buddha-nature.
Anyone who attains enlightenment can become a Buddha, and
thus, every being is worthy of being considered the most noble
in the universe.
The phrase "삼계개고 아당안지" clearly articulates the purpose
of Buddha's presence on Earth: to alleviate the suffering of the
three realms and to bring peace.
Just as Buddha had a clear reason for coming to this world,
I believe there must be a reason for our existence as well.
With this vague belief, I began to awaken to the question of
"Who am I?" perhaps starting from the day I received
Hermann Hesse's "Demian" as a birthday gift during middle
school.
Reflecting on my life after retiring, a time when I had devoted
everything to my job, caring for my parents, and raising my
children, I now look back and realize that, like birds leaving no
trace in the sky, I am unsure of the reasons behind my intense
efforts.
It seems as if I have experienced a fleeting, empty dream.
The phrase from the Diamond Sutra, "일체유위법(一切有爲法)
(應作如是觀)", translates to: "All conditioned phenomena are
like a dream, an illusion, a bubble, a shadow, like dew and
lightning. Thus should one view them."
This reminds us to perceive the world as transient and illusory.
Inspired by this teaching, I've embarked on a journey to rediscover
myself and reconstruct the meaning of my life. To seek answers to
"Who am I?"—a question I'd set aside for a while—I started a blog
and published an e-book titled "To You Who Lost Your Way" in
early 2024. This marks my energetic pursuit into the latter half of
my life.
Sixteen years ago, after retiring from an airline, I took a course
on SaJu MyungRiHak (Four Pillars of Destiny) at Dongguk
University in Ilsan. The more I studied, the deeper I fell into the
profound and subtle charm of this knowledge, exploring various
books on the subject. Over time, I began to grasp the core flow
of these teachings.
Later, while working at the flight training center of Hanseo
University in Seosan, I once read a student's SaJu.
Word spread quickly, and soon many students were asking me
to read theirs, turning it into quite a busy affair.
At that time, when I read people's SaJu (Four Pillars of Destiny),
and even now, it wasn't because I had fully grasped the mysteries
of the universe. Rather, my approach was based on understanding
the basics of Yin-Yang, the Five Elements, and the meanings of
the heavenly stems and earthly branches. With this foundational
knowledge, I believe one can comprehend about 60-70% of SaJu.
This belief led me to reorganize the content I initially posted on
Naver under "The First Steps in Basic SaJu."
The first e-book I published focused on the ten heavenly stems,
representing the will of heaven: Gap (甲), Eul (乙), Byeong (丙),
Jeong (丁), Mu (戊), Gi (己), Gyeong (庚), Shin (辛), Im (壬), and
Gye (癸). By understanding the symbolic meanings embedded in
each of these characters, one can gain a more intimate
understanding of their implications.
The book's unique feature is its ability to show, at a glance,
how the heavenly stems positioned beside one's own can either
benefit or harm them. This allows readers to grasp the general
fate outlined by their SaJu with confidence.
Additionally, many people are interested in zodiac-based fortunes,
which can be better understood by studying the earthly branches
beneath the heavenly stems. I plan to publish the second part
of the Basic SaJu MyungRiHak series, focusing on understanding
the 12 earthly branches, by the end of this year.
William Shakespeare, in one of his four great tragedies, "King Lear,"
states that "happiness and unhappiness do not come alone."
This reflects the idea that all happiness and unhappiness are not fixed
but constantly changing.
In the context of the I Ching, or "Book of Changes," the character
"易 (Yi)" is composed of the characters for sun (日) and moon (月).
The sun represents Yang (陽), and the moon represents Yin (陰).
Just as the scorching sun of midday eventually sets behind the
mountains and the full moon wanes, the harmony of heaven and
earth is boundless and ever-changing.
Therefore, when one leans too heavily towards Yin or Yang, the
balance is disrupted, potentially leading to illness or misfortune.
The concept of "Yi" embodies the notion of constant change and
the exploration of these changes by ancient sages.
If the principles of the world were unchanging and fixed, there
would be no need for SaJu (Four Pillars of Destiny).
There's a saying, "The universe is a great body, and the body is
a small universe." As the universe is in constant change, so too is
human destiny.
SaJu MyungRiHak can be viewed as a study of the seasons.
In spring, all things are reborn; in summer, they flourish; in autumn,
they yield harvest; and in winter, seeds are stored in the earth for
the next cycle. This natural progression parallels the human life cycle.
When a person dies, it is said that they reflect on their life in the mirror
at the entrance of the afterlife, known as the "Myeonggyeongdae"
(a mirror in the afterlife). This reflection determines their judgment.
If one hasn't committed deeds bad enough for hell, they will
reincarnate. If allowed to return as a human, they can plan their
next life, writing a scenario for how they wish to live.
Once approved, this becomes their destiny in the next life.
A drama filled solely with happiness and laughter from the protagonist's
birth to death is rarely popular. Stories of unexpected misfortune and
crises, where success is achieved through indomitable will, tend to
resonate more with audiences. By crafting a narrative with more
misfortune than happiness, making even the heavens weep,
one's burdens may be quickly lifted.
Thus, we often hear people lament, "How could the heavens be so
indifferent? How did such a selfless and kind person die so soon?"
However, dying early is not necessarily a bad thing.
It is a part of life's journey and not solely a misfortune.
Because the death he experienced was a realization of a part of the
destiny plan he had already crafted for himself.
"Yesterday's today was once a hopeful future for someone, and
tomorrow's today will become a cherished past for another."
In Buddhism, it is believed that past actions influence the present and
future. This is explained by the law of karma, where past deeds shape
the conditions and situations of the present and future.
The past offers us lessons and opportunities to build wisdom for the
present and future.
In Buddhism, the future is seen as not predetermined,
emphasizing the principle of impermanence. Everything changes,
and the future is shaped by our current thoughts and actions.
Ultimately, Buddhism encourages reducing worries about the future
and focusing on the pursuit of enlightenment and liberation, achievable
through present awareness and practice
Now" is considered the most crucial moment, aligning with the concept
of mindfulness (Sati), which emphasizes finding true happiness by
concentrating on the present.
The notion that current actions and decisions plant the seeds for the future
emphasizes that how we live in the present shapes our future.
This idea aligns with the teachings found in the Diamond Sutra, specifically
in the 18th section titled "All Beings Are One" (一體同觀分).
The story involves the great master Doksan, known for his expertise in
the Diamond Sutra. As he was carrying a commentary on the sutra,
he stopped by a rice cake shop run by an old woman due to hunger.
The woman posed a profound question to him:
Past Mind Cannot Be Grasped
The past mind has already passed and cannot be held.
Future Mind Cannot Be Grasped
The future mind has not yet come and cannot be held.
Present Mind Cannot Be Grasped
The present mind changes in an instant, becoming the past
the moment it is grasped.
The old woman then asked, "Which mind will you use to
have your snack?"
This question highlights the transient nature of the mind and
challenges us to consider which state of mind we choose to
engage with the present moment.
In response to the old woman's question, the story goes that
Master Doksan was left speechless and disappeared out of
embarrassment. This tale serves as a reminder of the transient
nature of the mind and the concept of emptiness (sunyata).
As ordinary beings, it is natural for us to be unable to provide
a definitive answer to such a profound question.
Simply being grateful for the day we have been given, accepting
it with humility, and living each minute and second with happiness
and purpose might serve as a modest, perhaps inadequate,
response to the question, "Why do we live?" Yet, in its own way,
it is a meaningful answer.
