"Coo-coo-coo, cluck-cluck-cluck!" From early in the morning,
a few pigeons outside the second-floor window flap their wings and
wake me up.
"Hey! Don't these pigeons ever sleep? Disturbing my sweet slumber
since dawn..." I grumbled, only to check the clock and see it was
past 7 a.m.
"I better hurry up!" Even though it's Sunday, I had to attend a junior's
wedding, so I made my way to the bathroom.
As I turned on the sink and looked in the mirror, shadows of birds
danced in front of the small window next to the right vent, flapping
playfully.
"You little rascals!" I exclaimed as I suddenly slid open the window.
"Whoa!" To my surprise, it wasn't the pigeons that were startled, but me.
Standing firm on the open window ledge, they stared at me with wide
eyes, as if to say, "What's all this chatter about so early in the morning?"
Even little birds now seem to look down on me, and my dignity is
nowhere to be found. "Shoo! Shoo! Go away!" I waved my hands
as if to catch them, but they only reluctantly moved a few steps to
the side window, not going far.
In disbelief, I muttered, "Alright, you're a clever bird," and closed
the window.
A few days ago, I was waiting for a bus at the bus stop when a little
kid standing with me scattered some snack crumbs on the pavement.
Suddenly, 6-7 pigeons flew over to peck at the scattered crumbs, and,
coincidentally, there were a few appetizing crumbs right in front of
my feet.
The pigeons I used to know would at least wait for a person to step
aside out of courtesy before approaching, but not these pigeons.
Without any regard for me watching, they boldly came up next to
me, nonchalantly pecking at the crumbs right beside my shoes.
It makes me wonder if the pigeons have become arrogant because
they are thoroughly convinced that people won't harm them.
In the Book of Genesis in the Bible, during the story of "Noah's Ark,"
the world was flooded after six weeks of continuous rain.
When the ark finally arrived at Mount Ararat, Noah waited over six
weeks, first sending out a raven that did not return.
Later, he sent out a dove, which returned without finding a place to
settle. After waiting another week, he sent the dove out again, and
this time it came back with an olive leaf in its beak.
The role of pigeons as messengers, delivering news to people far
away, and their symbolism as a sign of peace, has left such a
lasting impression in our minds that we've overlooked many of
their mistakes or rude behaviors. Could this have led to the bold
behavior we see in pigeons today?
Nowadays, it's hard to find the fresh and hopeful image of pigeons
that once played a significant role on Noah's Ark.
In places like Central Park in Manhattan, not just in Korea, you can
easily spot pigeons lounging about.
Some pigeons have become so overweight from overeating that
they can barely fly, waddling around unable to manage their own
bodies.
I'd like to introduce a method to readers on how to reform the
manners of these impudent birds.
Once, when my nephew Jong-hoon and his spouse visited
America, we took a road trip from New York to Niagara Falls.
Taking turns driving with Jong-hoon and listening to music,
we arrived around 1 a.m. only to find that there were no vacant
hotel rooms available.
Before leaving, we considered booking a hotel, but we thought
there would surely be at least one room available for our family
among the many hotels. Our assumption was wrong.
Tired and sleepy in the early morning, with no room to rest and
feeling hungry, we set up camp in a parking lot next to Niagara
Falls and cooked the ramen we brought with us.
The majestic roar of Niagara Falls rumbled nearby, shaking the
ground.
"Hey, Sang-mi, Yun-seon! Get up, have some ramen, and let's
go see the falls!" I called out, but they lay sprawled in the car,
not budging.
Leaving the kids in the car, the two of us approached the sound
of the falls, but it was so dark that we couldn't see much,
despite the loud noise.
We returned to the car, caught a few winks, and as daylight broke,
we grabbed our toothpaste and toothbrushes and headed to a
public faucet in the park.
"Are we here? Is this the place?" I turned my head at the sound,
and saw a large tour bus unloading a group of Korean tourists.
I wonder how many places on Earth haven't felt the footsteps of
Koreans.
Even though I often struggle to understand English despite intently
listening with furrowed brows, Korean, which I can understand
effortlessly without trying, always feels comforting.
I woke up the family to go see the falls. While it's said that the
view of the falls from the Canadian side is more majestic,
the view from the American side was also splendid.
Wearing yellow raincoats and boots, we took a boat towards the
base of the falls, where the white foam billowed out, and we
were once again awestruck by the grandeur of nature.
On the way back to New York, we would stop by famous parks
or beaches if we saw them on the map.
At one park, while we were grilling pork over a charcoal fire,
a flock of seagulls appeared out of nowhere, squawking and
rushing towards us.
When Yun-seon threw some pieces of pork in front of the seagulls,
they began pecking at each other's heads in a frenzy to get the
food first.
The seagulls quickly devoured the pork and became even more
aggressive, surrounding us and demanding more.
Yun-seon wanted to give them more, but I stopped her, saying
that we didn't have enough even for ourselves. Just then,
Jong-hoon tossed something to the seagulls.
Amidst the flock of seagulls that swarmed us, one seagull,
seemingly the leader, swiftly pushed others aside and gulped
it down in one go.
But then, to our surprise, it started squawking loudly, spinning
around, and flew off towards the sea in distress.
Not just the leader, but all the seagulls that ate what Jong-hoon
had given let out cries of discomfort.
"What on earth did you give them?" I asked, and Jong-hoon
laughed as he held up a container of kimchi.
"Indeed. Who else but Koreans would dare eat this spicy kimchi?"
We laughed so much on the way back after teaching those
impudent seagulls a lesson with the spicy and sour kimchi.
Even when we stopped at other parks and got surrounded by
seagulls, a few pieces of kimchi were enough to make them all
scatter in a hurry.
One day, I'll show the arrogant pigeons nesting next to our house
the taste of kimchi! I'll make them realize the power of humans!
