가장의 건강은 의무이다("The health of the head of the family is a responsibility."

After entering university, smoking and drinking began under the guise of being an adult.

Although smoking was given up after a solemn warning from a doctor upon joining an airline,

alcohol remained an essential part of social life and gatherings with friends.

Every year during health check-ups, the doctor would sternly advise abstaining from alcohol

due to elevated liver enzyme levels, warning, "If you continue like this, it could be fatal!"

Despite these resolutions, the sweet temptation from colleagues would quickly lead to evenings

at nearby bars, where venting about a difficult boss became a way to unwind.

Those moments are still vivid in my memory.

After being assigned to the U.S. as an expatriate and arriving in New York, it felt as though I

faced a year's worth of life's burdens and stress all at once, resembling a relentless and

challenging period. It was a harrowing time that almost broke me.

Starting late December 1994, I noticed an increase in thirst, especially during late work hours,

coupled with fatigue. I craved sugary drinks like cola, yet no amount of drinking could quench

my thirst.

Despite usually avoiding hospitals, I attributed these symptoms to mere exhaustion, thinking

rest would suffice. However, as fatigue persisted, I decided to visit a traditional Korean

medicine clinic.

The doctor at the clinic suggested it might be similar to a cold or flu and prescribed a traditional

herbal medicine. I took it twice daily for a few days, but unfortunately, it didn't seem to help.

In fact, I felt even more fatigued.

Finally, the day after my birthday, I found myself admitted to the hospital. Since my birthday

involved working late, I had only prepared a simple seaweed soup in the morning.

I planned to celebrate with my colleagues over drinks the next day. As I clocked out at 4:30 AM,

I suggested having a drink in the evening, but Choi, the maintenance chief, proposed that we

head into the city for a quick beer after work instead.

Who was I to refuse such an invitation? After sharing three to four bottles of beer, I went home

and collapsed into sleep. By the afternoon, I tried to wake up, but my body felt heavy and

unresponsive, like a waterlogged sponge.

Realizing the severity of my condition, I decided it was time to visit the hospital.

When I told my wife, who knows I rarely complain, she was surprised and urged me to go quickly.

We returned to the traditional Korean medicine doctor, who suggested cupping therapy to remove

"bad blood," applying cups to five or six spots on my abdomen.

When I entered the clinic, I still had my wits about me. However, after about an hour of cupping

therapy, my consciousness began to fade, and I felt an overwhelming urge to lie down.

By chance, Chief Song and his wife, who were at the clinic to get some herbal medicine, noticed

my condition. They suggested I visit a major hospital, so we headed to Memorial Hospital.

However, since we didn't have an appointment, we had to go through the emergency room.

Even in the U.S., the emergency room was bustling with patients in critical condition.

I struggled several times to maintain my consciousness, trying not to let it slip away.

As a nurse in a white uniform approached to take my blood pressure and asked how I was feeling,

I heard her voice faintly in my ears before I lost consciousness.

After some time, I gradually regained consciousness. Turning my head, I saw my wife sitting in a

chair, holding my hand, her face resting on the edge of the bed as she slept.

Her presence was both comforting and reassuring.

Thinking, "Poor thing! She must have been so scared," I tried to gently withdraw my hand to touch

her face. Sensing my movement, she woke up and asked, "Chungheon, are you awake?"

Her face clearly showed traces of tears.

Nodding to reassure her that I was alright, I reached out to wipe the tears from her eyes.

She jumped up, quickly wiping her tears away and smiling warmly. Just then, a nurse approached

and asked how I was feeling and if I knew what my diagnosis was.

When I said I didn't know, the nurse informed me it was "Diabetes." "Diabetes?" I thought.

Isn't that diabetes? While I had heard it was hereditary, and no one in my family had it,

the symptoms unmistakably pointed to diabetes.

Coming to the U.S., it seems I've encountered this peculiar illness. After sending the kids to school,

my wife would rush to the hospital to be by my side, only to return home when it was time for the

children to come back. Her dedication was truly remarkable.

One day, after going to make a phone call to check if the kids had returned home, my wife came

back with a pale face and breathlessly said, "Chungheon! Something's wrong. Sangmi said there's

a strange man in the house acting oddly. What should we do?"

"What? Where's the phone?" I asked the nurse to lend me a phone, but she directed me to use the

payphone in the hallway. So, I grabbed the phone and exclaimed, "There's an intruder in our house.

We need to call the police," and quickly dialed 911, which is just like dialing 119 in our country.

I gave the police our home address and urged them to get there quickly. Then, I called home, and

thankfully, Sangmi answered. She said the man was in the bathroom.

"What, he's in the bathroom? Why did you let a stranger in? Sangmi, don't worry! Daddy will be

there soon. Just put the man on the phone quickly!" I said, but then she screamed,

"Dad, he's out! I'm scared!"

"Get out of my house!. Don't touch my daughter. Cops will be there! Do you hear me?

Son of bitch!"

I shouted into the phone, "Get out of my house! Don't touch my daughter. The cops will be there!

Do you hear me? Son of a bitch!" Then I pulled out the IV needle from my arm and ran into the

hallway, where two strong male nurses blocked my way, saying I couldn't leave and apologizing

as they urged me to return.

I called a cousin and some colleagues, asking them to go to my house, and sent my wife there

as well. I kept anxiously thinking, "Please, just get away. If you don't, you could be in danger,"

and waited tensely until a call came about 10 minutes later.

It was my colleague, Kim Seonchan, on the phone. He informed me that the intruder had fled,

and the police had arrived to ask Sangmi for a description of the suspect.

At that time, my mother-in-law was not home because she had gone to pick up Yunseon from

school, leaving Sangmi to return home alone. It seems the intruder had followed her on her way

back from school, then used the excuse of needing to use the bathroom to enter and check if

anyone else was home.

Naive Sangmi opened the door for him when he knocked, claiming he urgently needed to use the

bathroom. Fortunately, my wife thought to call home at just the right moment, preventing what

could have been a very serious situation.

Lying in the hospital while our home was invaded by an intruder really made me dislike New York.

What kind of crazy place is this? Even after the incident, the police visited several times to check

in and asked for our cooperation in catching the intruder by providing a description.

I asked them not to come for this reason again, as I was concerned it might force Sangmi to relive

the traumatic experience.

For the first time, I earnestly called upon God, whom I hadn’t really believed in before.

A prayer of gratitude naturally flowed from my lips for protecting our family. "God! Thank you,

thank you so much."

Since setting foot in New York, I faced numerous challenges, from car theft to moving three times,

buying three cars, being hospitalized, and dealing with a home invasion.

After enduring such immense hardships, I realized a few things.

The hardships of life, illness, and death persist as long as life exists, but the realization that when

the head of the family falters, the entire household can collapse in an instant is an undeniable truth.

To ensure family well-being, it's crucial for individuals to take responsibility for their own health,

thus preventing unnecessary worry for the family. The health of the head of the family is indeed

a responsibility and obligation.

Buddha emphasized the importance of health through his teachings in the scriptures.

“Health is the greatest benefit, and contentment is the greatest wealth.” (Dhammapada)

“When the body and mind are pure, happiness naturally follows.”

“Anger harms the body, and greed sickens the mind.”

“Harboring compassion brightens the face and extends one's life.” (Ekottara Agama)

By letting go of anger and greed and embracing compassion towards those around you, health,

wealth, and happiness will naturally come. Therefore, I aspire to live purely, maintaining the

cleanliness of both body and mind.
