올해 10월 31일 APEC(아시아 태평양 경제 협력체) 정상회의가 신라의
옛 도읍 '경주'에서 개최된다고 한다.
The APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Summit is said to be
held in Gyeongju, the ancient capital of Silla, on October 31st this year.
21개 국이 참가하는 이번 정상회의는 미국 트럼프의 관세 정책으로 인한
걸림돌로 주최국인 한국은 물론 중국 시진핑이 즐거운 만남을 가질지 의문
이다.
This summit, which involves 21 countries, raises questions about
whether it will be a pleasant meeting for both South Korea, the host
country, and China's Xi Jinping, especially given the trade barriers
due to U.S. President Trump's tariff policies.
1970년대 만 하더라도 수학여행 하면 '경주'가 일순위로 꼽힐 정도로
전국의 많은 학생들이 다녀 온 우리나라의 불교문화가 융성했던 곳이기도
하다.
Back in the 1970s, Gyeongju was a top destination for school trips,
known for its rich Buddhist culture that many students across the
country visited.
경주(慶州)는 신라의 옛 수도인 서라벌/계림에서 유래되었으며, 후에 고려
태조 왕건이 '경사스러운 고을' 이라는 뜻으로 경주로 개칭 했다고 전해진다.
Gyeongju originates from Seorabeol/Gyerim, the ancient capital of Silla,
and was later renamed by King Taejo of Goryeo to mean "a glorious county."
부디 경사스러운 고을에서 열리는 이번 정상회의가 모든 국가에게 이익이
되는 의미있는 회의가 되기를 희망해 본다.
I hope that the upcoming summit held in this "glorious county" will be a
meaningful meeting that benefits all nations involved.
가을 햇살이 황금빛으로 물든 경주. 첨성대와 대릉원 사이로 불어오는 바람
엔 천년 신라의 숨결이 실려 있다. 그리고 올해, 이 유서 깊은 도시가 다시
한 번 세계의 중심에 선다.
In Gyeongju, where the autumn sunshine turns everything into a golden
hue, the wind blowing between Cheomseongdae and Daereungwon
carries the breath of a thousand-year-old Silla. And this year, this historic
city once again takes center stage on the world stage.
바로 APEC 정상회의가 열리는 것이다.
세계 각국의 지도자들이 모여 협력과 평화를 논의하는 그 자리에, 신라
천년의 지혜와 정신이 함께 깃들어 있다.
그 상징이 바로 불국사(佛國寺)가 아닌가 한다.
That's because the APEC Summit is taking place here.
At this gathering where leaders from around the world discuss
cooperation and peace, the wisdom and spirit of a millennium of
Silla are present.
Isn't Bulguksa Temple the symbol of that very spirit?
천년의 기도, 불국사의 탄생 이야기
("The Story of a Thousand Years of Prayer, The Birth of Bulguksa")
불국사는 단순한 사찰이 아니다. 인간의 한계를 넘어 이 땅에 부처의 세계
를 구현하려 했던 꿈의 공간이며 그 시작은 통일신라 시대의 김대성(金大城)
이라는 인물에서 비롯된다.
The story of Bulguksa's birth is not just about the creation of a temple;
it's a testament to the dream of transcending human limitations to
manifest the Buddha's world on Earth. This dream began with a man
named Kim Daeseong during the Unified Silla period.
신라 시대 경주 모량리에 경조라는 여인이 살고 있었다. 경조에게는 아들이
하나 있었는데 큰 머리에 평평한 이마를 가지고 있어 큰 성(城)처럼 생겨
대성(大城)이라고 이름 지었다.
In the Silla era, there lived a woman named Gyeongjo in Moryang-ri,
Gyeongju. She had a son with a large head and a flat forehead,
resembling a great fortress, hence he was named Daeseong, meaning
"Great Fortress."
집안이 가난하여 경조와 대성은 부잣집 복안의 집에서 일을 하며 살았다.
복안은 이들 모자에게 밭을 약간 떼어 주고 농사 지어 먹고 살게끔 해주었다.
Gyeongjo and Daeseong, from a poor household, worked at the house
of a wealthy man named Bok-an. Generously, Bok-an allotted them a
small piece of land to farm and sustain themselves.
이때 경주성 안에 있는 흥륜사(興輪寺)에서 육륜회(六輪會)란 모임을 하기
위해 점개라는 스님이 시주를 받으러 다녔다.
복안이 베 50필을 시주하자 점개스님은 "하나를 시주하면 만 배로 돌아오니
부처님의 보호를 받아 장수하실 것입니다.”라며 덕담하였다.
During this time, a monk named Jeomgae from Heungnyunsa Temple
in Gyeongju went around collecting donations for a gathering called
Yukryunhoe. When Bok-an donated 50 rolls of cloth, Jeomgae expressed
his blessing, saying, "One donation will return ten thousandfold,
and you will live a long life under Buddha's protection."
마침 대성이 점개스님의 덕담을 듣고 어머니 경조에게 가서 “하나를 시주
하면 만 배로 돌아온다고 합니다. 지난 생에 닦은 덕이 없기에 이번 생에
가난한가 봅니다. 다음 생을 위해서라도 주인에게 받은 밭이라도 시주하면
어떨까요?”라고 하였다.
Upon hearing this, Daeseong suggested to his mother, Gyeongjo,
"If one donation returns ten thousandfold, perhaps our current poverty
is due to a lack of virtue in past lives. Shouldn't we consider donating
the land we received for the sake of the next life?"
어머님의 허락을 받은 대성이 점개스님에게 밭을 시주하겠다고 하자 점개
스님이 대성에게도 덕담을 해주었다. 얼마 후 대성이 그만 세상을 떠났다.
With his mother's permission, Daeseong offered the land to Monk
Jeomgae, who then gave Daeseong a blessing. Shortly thereafter,
Daeseong passed away.
그날 밤 조정의 대신 김문량의 집에 ‘모량리의 대성이가 이 집에 태어날
것이다.’라는 소리가 들렸다. 김문량의 집에서는 소리를 듣고 놀라 모량
리에 가서 수소문해 보니 정말로 대성이란 아이가 갑자기 죽었다는 것
이었다. 그 후로 김문량의 부인이 임신하여 열 달 뒤에 아들을 낳았다.
That night, a voice was heard at the house of Kim Mun-ryang,
a government minister, saying, "Daeseong from Moryang-ri will be
reborn in this house." Hearing this, Kim Mun-ryang was astonished
and made inquiries in Moryang-ri, discovering that Daeseong had
indeed suddenly died.
Subsequently, Kim Mun-ryang's wife became pregnant and gave
birth to a son ten months later.
아기가 왼손을 꼭 쥐고 7일 만에 폈는데 손바닥을 살펴보니 ‘대성(大城)’
이라는 두 글자가 써있었다. 그래서 이 아이를 김대성이라 부르게 되었다.
The baby clenched his left fist tightly and only opened it after seven
days, revealing the characters "Daeseong" on his palm.
Thus, the child was named Kim Daeseong.
김문량은 원래 대성의 어머니인 경조를 데려다가 두 부인에게 새로 태어난
대성을 키우게 하였다. 세월이 흘러 하루는 대성이 토함산에서 곰 한 마리
를 사냥하였다.
Kim Mun-ryang brought Daeseong's original mother, Gyeongjo,
to care for the newborn Daeseong along with his two wives.
As time passed, Daeseong grew up, and one day, he hunted a bear
on Mount Toham.
그날 밤 꿈에 곰의 귀신이 나타나 “네가 날 죽였으니 나도 너를 죽일 것
이다.”라고 했다.
That night, Daeseong dreamed of the bear's spirit, which threatened,
"Since you killed me, I will kill you too."
대성은 “잘못하였으니 제발 살려주시오. 나는 지난 생의 부모와 이번 생의
부모를 함께 모시고 있으니 내가 죽으면 절대 안 되오."라며 애걸하였다.
Daeseong pleaded, "Please forgive me. I am caring for both my past
life’s and present life’s parents, so I cannot die."
그러자 곰의 귀신이 "너를 꼭 죽이려 하였는데 사정이 딱하구나.
그렇다면 나를 위해 절을 지어 내 혼을 위로해 주겠느냐?”
대성은 반드시 그러겠다고 약속을 하고 잠에서 깨어났다.
The bear's spirit, moved by Daeseong's situation, replied,
"I intended to kill you, but your circumstances are pitiable.
Will you build a temple to comfort my soul?"
Daeseong promised to do so and awoke from the dream.
그 뒤로 대성은 사냥을 그만두고 곰을 잡았던 곳에 장수사(長壽寺)라는
절을 지어 곰의 명복을 빌었다.
After this, Daeseong stopped hunting and constructed Jangsa Temple
at the site where he had killed the bear, praying for the bear's soul.
그 후 대성은 깨달은 바가 있어 불도를 닦으며 공덕을 쌓기에 몰두하였다.
전생과 이생의 부모님이 세상을 떠나니 ‘절을 지어서 명복을 빌어드리는 것
이 부모님의 은혜를 갚는 길이겠지.’ 라고 생각하여 이번 생의 부모님을 위
해서는 불국사를, 지난 생의 부모님을 위해서는 석불사(석굴암)를 지었다
고 한다.
Through these experiences, Daeseong realized his purpose and
devoted himself to Buddhist practices, accumulating good deeds.
When his parents from both his past and current lives passed away,
he believed that building temples to pray for their souls was the best
way to repay their kindness. Therefore, he built Bulguksa for his
current life's parents and Seokgulam (Seokguram Grotto) for his
past life's parents.
그의 말처럼, 석굴암은 하늘의 세계, 불국사는 이 땅의 이상향을 상징하게
되었다. 인간 세상에 부처의 세계를 만들겠다는 꿈, 그것이 바로 불국사의
시작이었다.
As he envisioned, Seokguram represents the celestial world, while
Bulguksa symbolizes an ideal land on Earth. The dream of creating
the Buddha's world in the human realm—that was the beginning of
Bulguksa.
이번 APEC 정상회의의 주제는 ‘지속 가능한 성장과 조화로운 협력’이다.
흥미롭게도, 불국사의 건축 철학이 바로 그 정신과 닮아 있다.
The theme of the upcoming APEC Summit is "Sustainable Growth
and Harmonious Cooperation." Interestingly, the architectural philosophy
of Bulguksa closely mirrors this spirit.
불국사는 자연과 인공, 하늘과 땅, 인간과 신성의 조화를 상징한다.
석가탑과 다보탑이 마주 서 있는 모습은 ‘단순함과 화려함’, ‘명상과 실천’
이라는 상반된 세계의 균형을 보여준다.
Bulguksa stands for the harmony between nature and man-made
structures, heaven and earth, and the human and divine.
The juxtaposition of Seokgatap and Dabotap illustrates the balance
between "simplicity and splendor," and "contemplation and action."
이는 마치 각국의 문화와 이해가 서로 다르지만, 대화와 협력으로 하나의
세계를 만들어 가야 한다는 현대의 메시지와 통하는 것이 아닐까 한다.
This reflects the modern message that although the cultures and
understandings of different countries may vary, it's through dialogue
and cooperation that we can create a unified world.
석가탑은 “지혜의 탑”, 다보탑은 “자비의 탑”.
지혜와 자비, 두 가지가 함께 공존할 때 세상은 평화로운게 아닐까?
Seokgatap is known as the "Pagoda of Wisdom," and Dabotap as the
"Pagoda of Compassion." When wisdom and compassion coexist,
isn't the world a more peaceful place?
트럼프와 시진핑이 아마 이 탑 앞에 서면 돌같던 차거운 마음이 솜사탕
처럼 부드러워 질까?
Perhaps if leaders like Trump and Xi Jinping stood before these
pagodas, their hardened hearts might soften like cotton candy.
"진정한 평화란 무력의 균형이 아니라, 마음의 균형에서 시작되는
것이 아닐지.."
"True peace might begin not with a balance of power, but with a
balance of the heart."
불국사의 전설을 통해 인간이 추구해야 할 진정한 ‘나라의 길’을
엿볼 수 있다. 김대성은 불국사를 짓던 중, 돌 하나라도 정성을 다해
올렸다고 한다.
Through the legend of Bulguksa, we can glimpse the true path a
nation should pursue. It's said that Kim Daeseong placed each
stone of Bulguksa with utmost devotion.
장인과 승려, 백성들이 함께 돌을 다듬고 올리며 “이곳이 곧 부처의
나라가 되기를” 기원했다.
Artisans, monks, and common people worked together, shaping
and placing stones with the hope that "this place becomes the land
of Buddha." Such collective aspiration symbolizes unity and purpose.
경주는 유네스코가 지정한 세계문화유산의 도시이자, 대한민국 정신
문화의 뿌리다.
Gyeongju is not only a city designated by UNESCO as a World
Heritage site but also the root of Korea's spiritual and cultural heritage.
이번 APEC 회의가 경주에서 열리는 것은 단순한 우연이 아니다.
불국사의 전설처럼, 과거의 지혜로 미래를 밝히기 위한 자리이기
때문이다.
The fact that the APEC meeting is being held in Gyeongju is no
mere coincidence. Like the legend of Bulguksa, it serves as a
platform to illuminate the future with the wisdom of the past.
참가하는 정상들은 석가과 다보탑 그림자 아래서 국가의 이익을 넘어
인류 공동의 이익을 생각해야 될 것이다.
Under the shadows of Seokgatap and Dabotap, the participating
leaders are encouraged to think beyond national interests and
consider the collective benefit of humanity.
그리고 그 순간, 김대성이 꿈꾸었던 ‘불국토’, 즉, 사람이 서로를 이해
하고 돕는 세상, 바로 이곳 경주에서 잠시나마 느꼈으면 좋겠다.
In that moment, it would be wonderful if they could feel, even briefly,
the world Kim Daeseong dreamed of—a society where people
understand and help each other—right here in Gyeongju
불국사의 정신은 ‘나만을 위한 소승의 부처님이 아니라, 세계의 모든
국민을 위한 대승의 부처님’을 향한다.
The spirit of Bulguksa reaches towards a "Mahayana Buddha"
for all people, rather than a "Hinayana Buddha" for oneself alone.
진정한 리더란 바로 그런 사람일 것이다.
자신의 이익을 넘어, 백성과 이웃의 행복을 위해 움직이는 지도자.
이번 APEC 경주 회의가 세계의 모든 리더들에게
김대성의 ‘효심과 자비의 리더십’을 전하는 계기가 되길 바란다.
A true leader is someone who moves beyond personal gain to
work for the happiness of their people and neighbors.
I hope that the APEC meeting in Gyeongju becomes an opportunity
to convey Kim Daeseong's "leadership of filial piety and compassion"
to leaders from around the world.
