Today, as I ponder what story to write for my blog, I happened to glance at the calendar and
noticed that August 29th marks Chilseok, the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.
The story that immediately comes to mind when thinking of Chilseok is that of Gyeonwu and
Jiknyeo.
Long ago, Jiknyeo, the daughter of the Jade Emperor, loved weaving. The Jade Emperor, fond
of Jiknyeo, arranged her marriage to Gyeonwu, a diligent cowherd.
However, after their marriage, the once industrious couple neglected their work and spent their
days idly.
Angered by this, the Jade Emperor separated them by placing them on opposite ends of the
Milky Way, allowing them to meet only once a year on the night of the seventh day of the
seventh lunar month.
To help the yearning couple, magpies and crows from the earth ascended to the sky, forming
a bridge across the Milky Way with their bodies. This bridge is known as the Ojakgyo.
This tale is a beautiful yet sorrowful love story that every Korean is familiar with.
In eight days, it will be Chilseok. Lately, the weather has been so hot that the distinction between
day and night seems to blur, leaving my mind hazy and my plans incomplete, making me feel
even more sluggish.
If it rains on the evening of Chilseok, it is said to be the tears of joy from Gyeonwu and Jiknyeo's
reunion. If it rains at dawn the next day, it is their tears of farewell. Looking at today's weather,
the temperature is at 31 degrees Celsius, and while cumulus clouds hang low, they are white
rather than dark, suggesting no rain in sight.
To the younger generation, this might seem like an old-fashioned love tale. However, who can
truly understand the yearning of waiting 364 days on the east and west of the Milky Way just
to meet for a brief moment on one day of the year?
In terms of constellations, Jiknyeo's star, known as Vega, is located in the Lyra constellation,
on the eastern side of the Milky Way, and is about 26 light-years from Earth.
Gyeonwu's star, Altair, is located in the Aquila constellation on the western side of the Milky Way,
about 16 light-years from Earth. In astrology, Altair is known as a star that causes disasters,
and it is associated with the story of Zeus transforming into an eagle and flying away,
earning it the name "spreading wings eagle."
The legend of the Lyra constellation, like the story of Gyeonwu and Jiknyeo, is also about a poignant
separation from a loved one, making it fitting that Jiknyeo's star is located in the Lyra constellation.
The legendary musician Orpheus, who received a lyre from his father, Apollo, married Eurydice,
but their marriage was not blessed by Hymenaios, the god of marriage.
Less than ten days after their wedding, Eurydice was bitten by a snake and sent to the underworld.
Stricken with grief, Orpheus, with the help of Demeter, the earth goddess, embarked on a journey
to the underworld to find his wife.
Playing his lyre and singing mournfully, Orpheus moved through the "River of Wailing," the
"River of Fire," and the "River of Forgetfulness," eventually moving Hades, the god of the underworld,
to allow him to take his wife back. However, the condition was that he must not look at her face until
they exited the underworld.
As Orpheus stepped out of the cave, he turned to check if Eurydice was following, and in that instant,
she vanished back into the endless underworld.
Overcome with sorrow, Orpheus lamented, blaming the gods of the underworld, and was eventually
killed by spears and stones thrown by Thracian maidens. In death, he finally reunited with his wife
in the underworld.
Moved by Orpheus's journey to the underworld for his beloved, Zeus placed Orpheus's lyre in the sky,
creating the Lyra constellation, making it fitting for Jiknyeo to reside there.
There are aspects of South Korea that are often mentioned negatively on the global stage.
Firstly, the country's high suicide rate, especially among the young and elderly, is a significant concern.
Secondly, the excessive educational pressure and academic stress cause many students to suffer.
Thirdly, social inequality and the wealth gap are said to be increasing societal instability and conflict.
Moreover, a more unwelcome statistic is that South Korea's divorce rate has surpassed that of Japan
and France. In the past, the idea of divorce was unthinkable, highlighted by the saying that a woman
should remain tied to her husband's family even in the afterlife.
Has the "globalization of divorce" finally arrived?
In the past, reasons for divorce were vaguely described as "differences in personality,"
but now they have become more specific, such as financial incompetence and unjust treatment.
While Gyeonwu and Jiknyeo long to meet, and Orpheus journeyed to the underworld for his wife,
it's unfortunate that nowadays, people seem eager to separate. The once-common wedding vow to
stay together "until our hair turns white" seems to be fading away.
Young people's views on marriage and divorce have changed significantly.
Marriage is seen more as a choice than a necessity, influenced by factors like economic burden,
individual freedom, and self-fulfillment.
Additionally, there is an increasing perspective that views divorce as a new beginning rather than a failure.
With shifting social norms, divorce is no longer taboo, and the emphasis on personal happiness leads
many to choose finding happiness over enduring an unhappy marriage.
I don't want to blindly criticize young people's changing perspectives due to traditional moral views.
However, as the saying goes, "If you understand the old, you can create the new." While it may seem
old-fashioned, isn't it romantic and heartfelt to maintain a bond once formed until the end?
Children who grow up witnessing and learning from their parents' loving relationship might pass on that
affection and fulfill their responsibilities to one another, ultimately creating a truly loving and beautiful
nation.
How can two individuals, each having lived more than twenty years in different environments, always agree?
Yet, if they carry in their hearts the true meaning of love, which is to prioritize the other, divorce might not
come so easily.
I believe that the culture of falling in love and divorcing too easily need not be globalized.
Marriage is a responsibility and a duty.
I envision a warm-hearted couple cultivating a "one-hearted dandelion" in their hearts,
creating a beautiful home.
As Chilseok approaches, how about reflecting on the importance of love and relationships while
envisioning your own happy future?
