On the way back from visiting Seonyudo, the Sudoksa sign that briefly caught my eye made

me unconsciously turn toward Sudoksa.

In the humanless Sudoksa, the night deepens,

and I see the lonely shadow of a sobbing nun.

Unable to forget the loved one left in the secular world,

she lights a candle in the temple and cries alone.

Ah~ Ah~ the iron bell of Sudoksa rings.

This song was popularized by singer Song Chun-hee in the 1960s. Inside the quiet temple,

while praying to Buddha, a woman's silhouette appears as she suddenly recalls the painful

memories of past years and sheds tears alone, lamenting to the Buddha statue.

When I arrived to pay respects to Buddha, I found the stairs steeper than expected, making

it challenging to meet him. At the entrance, the sign read "Deoksungsan Deoksung Chongnim

Sudoksa" in Korean, catching my eye.

The nun is no longer there, but it’s said that the first female monk to reside at Sudoksa was
'Kim Ilyeop.' She was the first Korean female student to study abroad in Japan,
where she had a fateful love with a Japanese man named “Oda Seizo” and had a son.

Later, when her son wanted to see his mother, he came to Sudoksa, but she harshly told him,
"The bond between you and me, formed in this secular world, ends here, so do not call me
mother anymore." She even made her young son, who had traveled far to see her, sleep
outside the temple, showing her cold-heartedness.

Beyond the story of this nun, there is an even more poignant legend about Sudoksa that
I wish to introduce.

Long ago, a young man named Sudok went hunting with his servants.

As he was waiting with his bow for a deer to appear, a deer the size of a calf jumped
in front of him.

Sudok aimed his bowstring but did not release it. Although he could have easily caught the
deer, he did not let go. Across from the deer stood a lady, her fluttering clothes in the breeze
resembling a fairy.

From that day, Sudok yearned for the lady and asked his servant to find out about her

residence. After inquiries, it turned out she was the lady Deoksung from the neighboring

village. Tormented by his longing, Sudok finally went to her house to propose.

However, Deoksung said she was not yet thinking of marriage and kept silent. Sudok,

not willing to back down, pleaded with her to marry him. She then pondered deeply and

asked him to build a temple near her house if he wished to marry her.

Sudok easily agreed and began constructing the temple the next day.
Excited by the thought of marrying the beautiful Deoksung, he was filled with happiness as
the temple neared completion. Finally, the temple was completed, and even the decorative
painting was finished.

Overjoyed, Sudok rushed to Deoksung's house, only to face disappointment.

Deoksung told him that because he built the temple with thoughts of her rather than Buddha,

it was all in vain.

As soon as she finished speaking, a pillar of fire rose from the newly built temple.

Although disheartened, Sudok could not give up on Deoksung. He started constructing the temple

again, purifying himself daily.

Occasionally, thoughts of Deoksung would distract him from his work.
Although the temple was completed again, it was burnt down once more, as he had occasionally
thought of a woman.

Thus, Sudok focused solely on Buddha while constructing the temple once more.
Eventually, the temple was completed, and Sudok again proposed to Deoksung.

Deoksung reluctantly agreed to marry him but made him promise not to touch her.
Sudok promised but eventually broke the promise and embraced her.

At that moment, thunder roared, and Deoksung vanished, leaving Sudok holding one of her

socks and turning into a rock. Beside the rock, a white flower resembling a sock bloomed,

known as the ‘Sock Flower.’

Deoksung was actually an incarnation of the Bodhisattva of Compassion.
The temple was then named ‘Sudoksa’ after Sudok, and the surrounding mountain was named
‘Deoksungsan’ after Deoksung, according to legend.

As I was leaving, I noticed a poster that read, "Deoksung Chongnim Sudoksa Eulsah Year

(2025) Summer Retreat Dharma Talk," with a Dharma message that awakened me.

"The bright moon and clear wind,
Cheong Mountain is Manjusri, the essence seen.
The sound of water is Avalokiteshvara, the object heard.
Ah, this amazing news is evident right before my eyes! I
t goes, stands, sits, and lies down.

It is the Avatamsaka Sutra, the Lotus Sutra.

Grass and trees, broken tiles.

Everywhere the eyes reach, the original innocent eternal landscape.

How strange, how strange.

Ah, Mahāyāna! Mahā-prajñā-pāramitā.

Sudden enlightenment, complete awakening.
Immediately, in this very moment, a single thought
Before discrimination, the lump of life, this is I
Avalokiteshvara! Avalokiteshvara is the answer.

I don't fully understand the meaning, but perhaps it suggests that the truth is right before
our eyes, indicating that all visible nature is the Dharma voice and the Dharmakaya of
Buddha.

"The sound of the stream is the long tongue of the Buddha,
The beauty of the mountains is the pure Dharmakaya of Buddha.
During the quiet night, the 84,000 verses of Dharma are heard,
How can I present this to others the next day?"

The above poem is said to be a kind of enlightenment poem presented by Su Dongpo to
Master Changzong of Donglin Temple in Lushan.

As an ancient Zen master said, "Realizing the path is easier than touching one's nose
while washing one's face," anyone can attain enlightenment, but perhaps many wander
around the truth with too many worries and thoughts.

In truth, everyone is inherently natural, and no one can be bound by themselves.
However, it seems that one's heart is often shaken by others' slander, leading to karmic actions.

"Respond without dwelling, yet give rise to that mind" is a key phrase from the Diamond Sutra,

teaching that one should live with a free mind, not clinging to or being attached to anything.

However, when one hears dismissive words, the flames of anger, jealousy, and inferiority burn

within them, harming themselves before reaching others.

Reflecting on "This too shall pass," if one patiently endures the humiliation received today,
it will fade away, and they can live with gratitude, realizing they've paid for past life's slander,
and the bad karma is gone. This way, the other person also recognizes their wrongs and reflects,
so one should not cling to a single insult but let their mind be free.

Where there is yin, there is yang, just as heaven and earth, man and woman, light and dark,

left and right, life and death, strength and weakness, high and low are all paired.

Just as there is sadness, there is joy, so life isn't just full of sorrow.

With that strength, people comfort each other and live together, do they not?
However, words meant as comfort can sometimes be taken as hurtful, causing pain.
It seems that in the sad and difficult journey of life, living with truthful words to comfort and
encourage each other is necessary.

"True words are not beautiful, and beautiful words are not true." American novelist Hemingway

wanted to write with only verbs and nouns, creating a sentence without embellishment: "I love you."

This phrase, simple yet conveying truth with just a subject and verb, can comfort and bring

happiness to others with just a warm gaze.

The "smile in the transmission of the flower" refers to a story where Shakyamuni Buddha, during

a sermon at Vulture Peak, silently held up a lotus flower, and only his disciple Kashyapa understood

its meaning and responded with a smile.

This illustrates the concept of communication and understanding of truth without words, through a single

gaze, known as "mind-to-mind transmission," "heart-seal," "direct transmission outside the scriptures,"

"no reliance on words," and "silent understanding."

Yet, how can ordinary beings live without words? By speaking with caution, using kind, correct,

gentle, and beautiful words, I hope to purify the chaotic world and become the starting point for

creating a peaceful, beautiful, and just 'utopia.'

"Be careful of your eyes,
Do not see others' faults,
Only see what is clear and beautiful.
Be careful of your mouth,
Do not speak unnecessary words,
Only speak kind, correct,
Gentle, and beautiful words." - [Sutta Nipata]
