화룡점정("the finishing stroke")

This story is taken from the "Samguk Yusa" and is about the Bodhisattva

Avalokiteshvara, known as Gwanseum Bosal in Korea, appearing in

three different places to help sentient beings. It's an inspiring tale of

divine intervention and compassion.

First Story:

In China, there was an emperor who loved an exceptionally beautiful

woman. He instructed a painter to capture her beauty in a painting.

However, while painting, the artist accidentally dropped his brush,

leaving a mark below the woman's navel in the painting.

Despite trying to fix it, he couldn't, and so he presented the painting to

the emperor, thinking it must be the will of heaven.

Surprisingly, the woman actually had a similar mark in real life.

Assuming that the painter must have had a close, improper relation

-ship with the woman to know such a hidden detail, the emperor

became enraged and said:

"Her outward appearance is identical, but the mark below her navel

is a secret hidden within. How did you know to paint it?"

As the situation escalated, the chancellor, who knew the painter's

character well, intervened, pleading that the artist was not that kind

of person and requested forgiveness. After some thought, the emperor

said, "If he is truly virtuous and upright, let him paint the figure I saw

in my dream last night. If the painting matches the dream, I will forgive

him."

The painter then created a depiction of the Eleven-Faced Avalokite-
shvara Bodhisattva, which matched the emperor's dream.

Astonished by the miraculous coincidence, the emperor's anger

dissipated, and he forgave the painter.

Once released, the painter, while confiding in a scholar named Bunjeol,

decided to leave China and travel to Silla, known for its reverence of

Buddhism. Upon arrival in Silla, he created a statue of Avalokiteshvara,

who appeared in the emperor's dream and saved his life.

He named the temple 'Jungsaengsa', meaning "Temple of Sentient Beings."

According to the "Samguk Yusa," this Chinese painter was none

other than the famous Zhang Sengyou from the Southern and

Northern Dynasties era. He was renowned for his somewhat mystical

painting abilities, even outside of this narrative.

The phrase “화룡점정” (painting the dragon’s eyes) is said to

originate from the painter Zhang Sengyou. One day, he was

asked by the abbot of Anrak Temple in Jinling to paint a dragon.

Reluctantly, he agreed to create a mural. Although everyone

admired the painting, they noticed that the dragon's eyes were

left incomplete.

When asked why, Zhang Sengyou explained that if he painted

the pupils, the dragon would come to life and fly away.

Skeptical, people mocked him, prompting him to paint the pupils.

At that moment, the sky darkened, thunder roared, and the

painted dragon came to life, flying into the sky.

This story emphasizes the power of the final, critical detail and

how it can bring something to life.

Second Story:

The second tale involving the Avalokiteshvara statue is about a

miracle at the Jungsaengsa Temple. A man named Choi Eun-ham,

worried about not having a son, prayed before the Avalokiteshvara

statue and was blessed with a son.

However, in 927 AD, when Gyeon Hwon of Later Baekje invaded

Gyeongju, chaos ensued. Concerned for his child's safety,

Choi Eun-ham prayed again at the statue:

"The enemy forces have suddenly invaded, and the situation is dire.

This child is precious, but I cannot escape with him.

If he is indeed a gift from the Great Saint, please bestow your great

mercy and care for him so that we may reunite."

With tears, Choi Eun-ham placed his son under the statue’s lion seat,

repeatedly looking back as he left. Half a month later, after the

enemy withdrew, he returned to find his child safe, seemingly freshly

bathed and with the scent of milk on his breath.

It was believed that Avalokiteshvara had cared for him.

This son, Choi Seung-ro, grew up to become a renowned statesman

in early Goryeo.

Third Story:

In 992 AD during the Goryeo Dynasty, the Jungsaengsa Temple was

overseen by a monk named Seongtae. However, the temple was

struggling financially due to a lack of donations.

Facing these difficulties, Seongtae went before the Avalokiteshvara

statue and explained his situation, expressing his intention to leave

the temple.

"I have lived here for a long time, diligently offering incense day

and night. However, since the temple's fields yield nothing to

sustain incense offerings, I have decided to move elsewhere

and came to inform you."

In a dream, Avalokiteshvara appeared to him, saying, "Stay here

and do not go far. I will gather offerings for you to use for incense."

Thirteen days later, two men arrived, their oxen and horses loaded

with goods, offering donations. They claimed to have come from

Gimhae, responding to a request from a monk at Jungsaengsa to

seek donations.

Seongtae, knowing no one had gone to Gimhae from the temple,

suggested they might have the wrong place. However, the men

insisted, saying a monk near Shingyeonjeong (a nearby well) had

directed them there, so they entered the temple.

Upon seeing the Avalokiteshvara statue at the temple, the two

men were astonished and exclaimed that the monk who had come

to Gimhae to request donations was none other than the figure

depicted in the statue. This meant that Avalokiteshvara had indeed

manifested in Gimhae.

Additional Story:

In 1173, a monk named Jeomsung stayed at the temple.

Despite his deep faith, he was illiterate. A fellow monk, envious of

Jeomsung, exploited this weakness by falsely claiming to the temple

authorities that Jeomsung was unqualified to be the head monk.

"This temple is a place where the nation prays for grace and blessings,

so it is appropriate to appoint a literate person as the head monk,"

the envious monk argued.

The authority agreed and decided to test Jeomsung by giving him

a Buddhist scripture upside down. Jeomsung, upon receiving it,

read it fluently as if the words flowed like water.

The authority, deeply impressed, asked him to read it again in the

center of the room. This time, Jeomsung remained silent, unable

to read.

The authority realized that while Jeomsung couldn't read by himself,

Avalokiteshvara intervened to enable him to read when necessary.

Hence, Jeomsung was allowed to continue as the head monk.

The "Samguk Yusa" contains numerous miracle stories, but

the tales of the "Jungsaengsa Avalokiteshvara" are particularly

noteworthy because they attribute miracles to the statue itself,

rather than direct appearances by the Buddha or Bodhisattvas.

This unique aspect captivates the imagination and offers a

different perspective on divine intervention.

In the vast and often lonely journey of life, where we struggle

and endure until the end, these mystical stories from "Samguk

Yusa" serve as an oasis, a life-giving source in the desert of our

existence. They offer hope and inspiration, much like finding

water in a barren landscape.

While we may not hope for miracles like flying through the

sky, breathing fire, or understanding the language of animals,

the simple miracle of having health and the ability to connect

with readers like you today is a joy.

Perhaps the most natural phenomenon is itself a miracle.

Nature (自然) refers to all things or events that exist on their

own or occur spontaneously in the universe, independent of

human influence.

It encompasses the order and phenomena of the universe,

existing apart from the human world.

The functions of our bodies and the mysteries of nature operate

like miracles every moment, yet we often overlook them.

Without any conscious effort, we breathe automatically,

and our hearts beat around 100,000 times a day, circulating

blood throughout our bodies.

Every day, countless cells in our bodies die and are replaced by

new ones, maintaining our health, while our immune system

protects us from numerous pathogens.

The ecosystem achieves balance through the interactions of

countless plants and animals. The Earth's rotation and orbit

around the sun bringabout seasonal changes, providing diverse

climates and environments.

Isn't nature truly fascinating?

What might seem ordinary at first glance, when examined

closely, reveals the wonders of nature as true miracles.

Yet, many people only recognize extraordinary events, like

the resurrection of the dead or winning the lottery,

as astonishing miracles. This perspective can be limiting.

In [1 Timothy 6:6-8], it is said, "But godliness with contentment

is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we

can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing,

we will be content with that." This passage encourages finding

contentment and recognizing the value of simplicity in life.

Similarly, the "Avatamsaka Sutra" emphasizes that "faith is the

foundation of the Way, and the mother of virtue," suggesting

the importance of inner faith and cultivation of wisdom over

blind expectation of miracles.

In Buddhism, "faith" is understood as the mental strength that

leads to right practice and wisdom, rather than an unconditional

hope for miracles.

When we embrace a heart full of contentment and faith, and

entrust everything to the heavens, I am confident that nature

will reveal its own miracles.
