Today is an Im‑o (壬午) day. Let’s derive today’s daily I Ching hexagram for an
Im‑o day as follows.
Converting the stem–branch to numbers (traditional numerology)
For the Heavenly Stems (천간), the numbers are: Gap (甲) = 1, Eul (乙) = 2,
Byeong (丙) = 3, Jeong (丁) = 4, Mu (戊) = 5, Gi (己) = 6, Gyeong (庚) = 7,
Sin (辛) = 8, Im (壬)= 9, Gye (癸) = 10.
So today’s Heavenly Stem Im (壬) corresponds to 9.
For the Earthly Branches (지지), the numbers are: Ja (子) = 1, Chuk (丑) = 2, In (寅) = 3,
Myo (卯) = 4, Jin (辰) = 5, Sa (巳) = 6, O (午) = 7, Mi (未) = 8, Sin (申) = 9, Yu (酉) = 10,
Sul (戌) = 11, Hae (亥) = 12.
So today’s Earthly Branch O (午) corresponds to 7.
Correspondence to the Eight Trigrams (8‑trigram numbers)
Number 1 = ☰ Qian (Heaven)
Number 2 = ☱ Dui (Lake)
Number 3 = ☲ Li (Fire)
Number 4 = ☳ Zhen (Thunder)
Number 5 =☴ Xun (Wind)
Number 6 = ☵ Kan (Water)
Number 7 = ☶ Gen (Mountain)
Number 8 = ☷ Kun (Earth)
Deriving the hexagram
Upper trigram = Heavenly Stem 9 ÷ 8 → remainder 1 → ☰ Qian (Heaven)
Lower trigram = Earthly Branch 7 → ☶ Gen (Mountain)
Interpreted through the I Ching:
☰ Heaven above / ☶ Mountain below – this hexagram is called Cheon
sandun (天山遯), “Retreat of Heaven over the Mountain.”
January 8 I Ching Hexagram — Within retreat, good fortune is hidden
Today’s hexagram is Cheonsandun (天山遯).
Above, heaven stretches far away; below, the mountain stands tall,
blocking the path.
Even if you wish to move forward, the situation does not permit it:
this signifies a time of withdrawal and concealment.
“Dun (遯)” means to flee and hide, but not running away in terror.
It refers instead to a wise retreat—stepping back in order to wait for
the right time.
The I Ching seems to ask you today:
“Is your retreat driven by fear, or is it a choice you make to prepare for
what comes next?”
Today’s core wisdom
Today, a single step back will benefit you more than a head‑on charge.
If you push needlessly, you may be left only with wounds, or run into
walls that will not listen no matter how hard you explain yourself.
In the time of Cheonsa
In the time of Cheonsandun, the world may feel as if it is not on your side,
and there may seem to be few who truly understand you.
All the more in such times, you need the wisdom to avoid, rather than
just the courage to endure.
If you force your way to the front, even relationships that were fine may
become depleted, and with the feeling that “I have to show them something,”
you may end up saying more than is necessary.
By contrast, not stepping forward today, not insisting on proving yourself,
and slightly reducing your presence become the very wisdom that prevents
major loss.
Today’s fortune depends not on “how much you can gain,” but on “how much
you can avoid losing and manage to preserve.”
An anecdote connected with Cheonsandun
The sword of the craftsman who stepped back
Long ago, there was a sword‑making craftsman.
In his youth, he was famous for making blades sharper than anyone else’s.
But as he grew older, he began to make fewer and fewer swords.
People asked him:
“Are you planning to quit now? Is it because your skill is no longer what
it used to be?”
The craftsman shook his head and said:
“The more the world is disturbed by war, the higher the price my swords
will fetch.
But the more swords I make in such times, the more blood will flow
from their tips.”
He deliberately reduced the number of orders he accepted,
and among those who sought him out, he refused to give swords to
anyone heading to the battlefield.
“Now is the time to hide swords from the world,” he said,
and with that, he cut down his own workload, withdrew quietly into the
mountains, and taught only a small number of disciples.
As the years passed, the wars subsided and the country found stability.
Then people said:
“It was not the one who polished swords in those blood‑soaked days,
but the one who hid them, who was the true craftsman.”
Cheonsandun is very much like the choice this craftsman
The I Ching says: “Dun (遯) is withdrawal, but withdrawal in order to
preserve the Way.”
It is not about forcibly severing arising desires, but about willingly taking
a step back when you know the time will bring harm.
This is the principle that Cheonsandun teaches.
Three pieces of advice for today
Today, honesty may not be received straightforwardly.
Rather than trying to explain your position to the very end, it is better to
stop at the point where you feel, “I’ve said enough.”
Second, if a conflict seems about to erupt, do not try to win—step aside.
Today’s quarrels may leave rifts in feelings that last longer than you think.
Instead of spending your energy on judging right and wrong, set your goal,
just for today, as “not getting entangled.”
When it comes to arguments, online comments, family conflicts, or
unnecessary clashes of opinion at work, pause and take one more breath.
Third, instead of pushing forward, make today a day to take care of yourself.
The time of Cheonsandun is better suited to tending your inner world than
reaching outward.
Today, rather than starting something new, spend your time on groundwork—
clearing what you’ve put off, checking your health, having time alone, studying,
or reviewing your finances.
The power that will protect you today is not bold challenge, but the restraint
that reduces unnecessary depletion.
The I Ching’s teaching for the second half of life
In youth, retreat is easily felt as defeat.
It seems as if yielding means taking a loss, and stepping back means your
presence will vanish.
But as you move into the latter half of life, the question “How far will I go?”
becomes far less important than “Where will I stop?”
Physical strength, relationships, work, responsibilities…
Rather than overburdening yourself, finding the timing to quietly step back,
leaving only what you can truly carry, is what keeps your life in balance.
Cheonsandun tells us:
“A wise retreat is the greatest preservation.”
The more you wish to protect something, the less it is a matter of simply
enduring at all costs.
There are ties and positions that are preserved longer when you stand one
step behind, rather than at the very front.
It’s fine to be recognized a little less, and to stand out a little less.
A retreat you can be proud of before your own conscience is the I Ching’s
path to a solid second half of life.
Today’s one‑line meditation
“Today is a day to take one step back, not to win, but to avoid losing.”
In living through today, a breakthrough is not always what is needed.
At times, being a little less forward and remaining a little more still is the
wisest choice you can make.
May you cross this day quietly and well—without haste yet without passivity—
protecting what must be protected as you go.
