Wisdom of the Day through the I Ching (January 9 · Gye-Mi Day)

— A Day to Mend Small Cracks

Today is Gye-Mi (癸未) Day.

As we did yesterday, we will derive today’s I Ching hexagram from the sexagenary

cycle (ganji) and use it to read today’s flow.

Ganji → Number Conversion (Traditional Numerology)

First, we convert the Heavenly Stem (천간, cheon-gan) and Earthly Branch

(지지, ji-ji) into numbers.

The numbers for the Heavenly Stems are:

Gap(甲)=1, Eul(乙)=2, Byeong(丙)=3, Jeong(丁)=4, Mu(戊)=5,
Gi(己)=6, Gyeong(庚)=7, Sin(辛)=8, Im(壬)=9, Gye(癸)=10

Today’s Heavenly Stem is Gye (癸), so its number is 10.

The numbers for the Earthly Branches are:

Ja(子)=1, Chuk(丑)=2, In(寅)=3, Myo(卯)=4, Jin(辰)=5,
Sa(巳)=6, O(午)=7, Mi(未)=8, Sin(申)=9, Yu(酉)=10, Sul(戌)=11, Hae(亥)=12

Today’s Earthly Branch is Mi (未), so its number is 8.

Correspondence with the Eight Trigrams (Numbers 1–8)

Correspondence with the Eight Trigrams (Numbers 1–8)

When we convert the numbers into the eight trigrams, we get:

1 = ☰ Qian (Heaven)
2 = ☱ Dui (Lake)
3 = ☲ Li (Fire)
4 = ☳ Zhen (Thunder)
5 = ☴ Xun (Wind/Wood)
6 = ☵ Kan (Water)
7 = ☶ Gen (Mountain)
8 = ☷ Kun (Earth)

Deriving the Hexagram

The upper trigram comes from the Heavenly Stem, and the lower trigram

from the Earthly Branch.

  • Upper trigram = Heavenly Stem 10 ÷ 8 → remainder 2 → ☱ Dui
  • Lower trigram = Earthly Branch 8 → ☷ Kun

Above, water gathers to form a marsh or lake;
below, the broad earth stretches out, receiving all that comes.

This hexagram is called Ze Di Cui (澤地萃) – “Lake over Earth, Gathering.”

I Ching Hexagram for January 9
— A Gathering That Needs Order

Today’s hexagram is Ze Di Cui (澤地萃)

Above, water collects to form a lake.
Below, the wide earth spreads out so that all manner of things can gather.

“Cui (萃)” means to gather, to assemble, to accumulate.
It points to a time when people, tasks, emotions, and thoughts
all come together and pile up in one place.

The I Ching seems to ask today:

“The things that have gathered around you now—

have they come by virtue, or have they simply piled up because you

have not arranged them?”

Today’s Core Wisdom

Today is a day that requires both the power to gather and the power to

organize and clear.

In the time of Ze Di Cui,

  • messages and calls increase,
  • work and tasks pile up,
  • thoughts and feelings come rushing in all at once,
  • people and information may come and go busily.

On the surface, it can look lively and abundant,
but if整理 does not keep up,
the place easily becomes overflowing and leaky.

The key today lies not in “what is gathering,”
but in “how you整理 and order what has already accumulated.”

  • Cutting everything off and rejecting it all is not auspicious,
  • but indiscriminately accepting everything is not auspicious either.

Today’s fortune depends not on “How much can I gather?” but on

“Among what has gathered, what will I keep, and what will I let go of?”

A Short Parable Related to Ze Di Cui
— The Craftsman Who Cleared Away Useless Stones

Long ago, there was a master stone craftsman.
His workshop was filled with stones he had brought down from the mountains.

For the first few years, he chose only the best stones and carved them.

But as time went by, in every corner of the yard,
more and more ambiguous stones piled up—
stones he kept thinking he might “use someday.”

One day, his apprentice asked:

“Master, why don’t you bring in more good stone?

It seems you don’t bring in new stone as often as you used to.”

The craftsman looked around the yard and said:

“Is there any room in this yard right now for new stone to come in?”

The apprentice looked around and saw, here and there,

  • broken stones,
  • stones too small or oddly shaped,
  • stones that had once been set aside for use but kept being delayed—
all piled up in a mess.

The craftsman picked up his axe and, sorting through the stones one by one, said:

“Gathering stone is not difficult.
What is truly difficult
is to boldly clear away the stones you will not use,
so that there is room for good stones to come in.”

For several days he stopped carving,
and instead整理ed the stones that had piled up,
separating those to use from those to discard.

Only after the yard was cleared,
did truly excellent stones begin to come into his hands once again.

Ze Di Cui is like this craftsman’s yard.

More important than the mere act of gathering
is the virtue and discernment with which you govern what has gathered.”

Three Pieces of Advice for Today

Look first at what has piled up, rather than what is coming in.

Today,
instead of bringing in

  • new plans,
  • new encounters,
  • new information,

it is a good day to take a look back at what has already piled up
inside you and around you.

  • The things in your room
  • Photos, notes, and apps on your phone
  • Your to‑do list
  • Resentments and lingering attachments in your heart

Rather than asking,
“Should I take in more?”

first ask,
“Which of these can I let go of?”

.

On the day of the Cui hexagram,
emptying out becomes the very preparation
for a greater gathering later.

In meetings and conversations, establish a “center.”

Ze Di Cui is also a hexagram of people gathering.

Today,

  • meetings, appointments, and get‑togethers,
  • calls, messages, and contacts

may become more frequent than usual.

What matters then is not
“How many people do I meet?”

but “On what basis are we gathering?”

If you find yourself exhausted
because you are merely trying to match the mood,
boldly cut down the time you spend there.

Give priority instead to

  • conversations where your standards and values are clear,
  • encounters that are mutually beneficial.

For today’s gatherings,
depth matters more than numbers.

Use your money and energy not to “earn more,”but to “plug the leaks.”

The energy of Ze Di Cui applies equally to your finances and your vitality.

New income, investments, and opportunities are fine, but today, above all,
your first task is to plug the holes where things are leaking out.

For example:

  • subscription services and auto‑payments you rarely use,
  • unnecessary spending habits,
  • unconscious, repeated waste of time and physical energy.

Simply reviewing and organizing these things once
can greatly help you make the most of today’s fortune.

"The power that protects you today

is not the greed to expand and earn more,
but the attentiveness that keeps things from leaking away."

The I Ching’s Teaching for the Second Half of Life

In our younger days, it can feel like true progress means

  • gathering more,
  • earning more,
  • meeting more people,
  • accumulating more experiences.

But as we move into the latter half of life, it becomes more

important to ask, not “How much have I gathered?”

but rather, “Among all that has gathered,

what is truly worth keeping as mine?”

Too many commitments
can wear down the relationships that are truly precious.

Excessive burdens
can keep you from taking even a single step
toward the path you genuinely wish to walk.

Ze Di Cui says:

“One who gathers well

is one who discards well and shares well.”

It is fine to pile up a little less.
It is fine to desire a little less.

For the sake of the people, work, and values you truly want to keep

in your life, take a moment to review what has piled up around you now.

That is the way of the Cui hexagram, which makes the second half of

life more solid and steady.

Today’s One‑Line Meditation

“Today is not a day to gather more,

but a day to refine what has gathered
and keep what is truly mine.”

In living through this day,
expansion and growth are not always the answer.

Sometimes, the wisest choice is

  • to organaize what has gathered,
  • to smooth out accumulated emotions and relationships,
  • and to quietly seal up the places where things have been leaking.

May you pass this day
neither scattering it in haste,
nor turning away from it passively,

but instead
carefully observing what has gathered around you,
crossing the day quietly—yet firmly and solidly.
