제2괘 ― 곤괘(坤卦) Hexagram 2 – Kun (坤)
곤(坤)의 본 뜻은
넓고 부드러운 대지가 만물을 포근히 품는 모습을 나타낸다.
The original meaning of Kun (坤)
is the image of the broad, gentle earth
that warmly embraces all living things.
우주를 구성하는 음양 2 으뜸요소 가운데
건이 창조를 설계하는 양(陽)의 하늘이라면,
곤은 그 설계를 받아
실제의 형체와 삶으로 길러내는 음(陰)의 대지이다.
Of the two primary elements of yin and yang
that make up the universe,
if Qian (乾) is the yang heaven
that designs creation,
then Kun is the yin earth
that receives that design
and nurtures it into actual forms and living beings.
순수한 음효가 3개 겹친 모습을 두 개 포개어
땅의 포용력, 수용성, 그리고 끝없는 생명력을 드러낸다.
By stacking together two trigrams,
each composed of three pure yin lines,
Kun reveals the earth’s capacity to embrace, to receive,
and its inexhaustible life force.

대지(大地), 모성(母性) The earth, the maternal (motherly) principle.
2. 곤괘의 뜻 The Meaning of Hexagram Kun
**곤(坤)**은 땅을 뜻하며,
건괘 다음에 놓여,
하늘의 뜻을 받아 만물을 기르는 자리이다.
Kun (坤) signifies the earth.
Placed after Qian,
it is the position that receives Heaven’s will
and nurtures all beings.
곤괘는 여섯 효가 모두 **음효(⚋)**로 이루어진
순수한 음의 괘로,
수용·양육·뿌리·지탱·겸허를 상징한다.
Kun is a hexagram of pure yin,
with all six lines being yin (⚋).
It symbolizes receptivity, nurturing, roots, support, and humility.
“지원(地元)은 만물을 이루는 터전이다.”
하늘이 시작이라면,
땅은 그 시작을 끝까지 책임지는 힘이다.
“The primal power of the earth is the ground on which all things are formed.”
If Heaven is the beginning,
then Earth is the strength that takes responsibility
for that beginning all the way to the end.
보이지 않게 받쳐주고,
묵묵히 길러내며,
끝까지 버텨내는 인내의 상징이 곤괘이다.
Quietly supporting from beneath,
silently nurturing,
enduring to the very end—
this is the symbol of patience embodied in Kun.
3. 핵심 지혜 Core Wisdom
“앞서 나가려 하지 말고,
먼저 온전히 받아들여라.”
곤괘의 힘은 화려한 창조가 아니라
받아들임·지속·신뢰에서 완성된다.
“Do not try to rush ahead;
first accept fully.”
The power of Kun is not in dazzling creation,
but in acceptance, persistence, and trust.
말하기 전에 듣는 귀
앞서기 전에 받쳐주는 뿌리
결과보다 과정을 지키는 인내
이 셋이 함께할 때,
곤괘의 참된 덕이 드러난다.
Ears that listen before speaking,
roots that support before taking the lead,
patience that protects the process more than the result—
when these three come together,
the true virtue of Kun is revealed.
4. 곤괘에 얽힌 고사 A Story Behind Kun
「가장 낮은 자리가 가장 넓다」
고대 중국에서 땅(地)은
항상 여성, 어머니, 백성을 상징했다.
“The lowest place is the widest.”
In ancient China, the earth (地)
always symbolized the feminine, the mother, the people.
하늘은 명령을 내리지만,
그 명령을 실제 삶으로 바꾸는 것은
언제나 땅의 몫이었다.
Heaven issues commands,
but it is always the earth
that turns those commands into actual life.
땅은 말이 없다.
하지만 씨앗을 받아들이고,
더럽고 무거운 것을 묵묵히 품고,
때가 되면 곡식을 내어준다.
The earth has no words.
Yet it receives the seed,
silently holds what is heavy and unclean,
and in due time, yields grain.
그래서 예로부터 군자를 말할 때,
“군자는 곤지덕(坤之德)을 본받는다.”
라고 하여,
높은 자리에 있으면서도
스스로를 땅처럼 낮추고,
모든 이를 담아내는 덕을 칭송했다.
So from old times, when speaking of a noble person, they said:
“The noble one models themself on the virtue of Kun.”
Even while in a high position,
they lower themselves like the earth,
and are praised for the virtue
of embracing and holding all.
곤괘는 말한다.
“진짜 힘은 드러나는 것이 아니라,
남을 받쳐줄 때 드러난다.”
Kun says:
“True strength is not what is seen on the surface;
it appears when you support others.”
5. 곤괘의 가르침 The Teaching of Kun
곤괘의 가르침은 담담하다.
"받되 분별 있게 받고,
따르되 생각 없이 따르지 말며,
낮추되 스스로를 헛되이 버리지 말라."
The teaching of Kun is calm and understated:
“Receive, but receive with discernment.
Follow, but do not follow thoughtlessly.
Humble yourself, but do not throw yourself away in vain.”
하늘의 뜻을 있는 그대로 받는다는 것은
주체성 없이 끌려가는 것이 아니라,
의미를 이해한 뒤,
한 번 맡은 것을 끝까지 지켜내는 태도이다.
To receive Heaven’s will as it is
does not mean to be dragged along without agency;
it means understanding its meaning,
and then faithfully protecting what you have taken on to the very end.
진정한 동반자, 진정한 지지자는
먼저 나서기보다 곁을 지키고,
앞에서 끌기보다 뒤에서 버티며,
빛을 독차지하기보다
다른 이가 빛나도록 배경이 되어준다.
A true companion, a true supporter
does not rush out in front, but stays by your side,
does not pull from the front, but braces from behind,
does not monopolize the light,
but becomes the background so that another may shine.
그래서 곤괘의 군자는
말보다 행동이 깊고,
힘보다 신뢰가 두텁고,
눈에 띄지 않아도
없으면 모든 것이 무너지는 사람이다.
Thus the noble person of Kun
acts more deeply than they speak,
is richer in trust than in outward power,
and even if unnoticed,
is the one without whom everything would collapse.
6. 묵상 한 줄 One Line for Meditation
“나는 지금, 나아가야 할 때인가
아니면 조용히 받아들이고 지켜야 할 때인가.”
“Is this a time for me to advance,
or a time to quietly accept and hold fast?”
