둔(屯)의 본 뜻은
씨앗이 막 흙을 뚫고 나오려는 순간,
세상과 처음 부딪히는 생명의 혼란을 뜻한다.
The original meaning of Tun (屯) is
the very moment when a seed is just about to break through the soil,
signifying the confusion of life as it first collides with the world.
움트려는 힘은 있으나
아직 길이 열리지 않았고,
앞에는 장애가,
안에는 불안이 함께한다.
There is a force that is ready to sprout,
but the way has not yet opened,
with obstacles ahead
and anxiety within.
둔은 ‘막힘’이자 ‘시작’이며,
좌절이 아니라
질서를 갖추기 전의 어수선함을 말한다.
Tun is both “blockage” and “beginning,”
not frustration,
but the disorder that exists before things find their proper order.
건이 가능성을 열고,
곤이 그것을 받아 안았다면,
둔은 그 가능성이
현실 속 첫 형태를 얻는 단계이다.
If Qian (乾) opens up possibility
and Kun (坤) receives and embraces it,
then Tun is the stage at which that possibility
takes on its first shape in reality.
1. 둔괘(屯卦)의 이미지 The image of the Hexagram Tun (屯卦)
물 위에 천둥이 이는 모습 Thunder rumbling above water:
어둠 속에서 울리는 첫 생명의 진동 the first vibration of life resounding in the darkness.
2. 둔괘의 뜻 The meaning of the Hexagram Tun
**둔(屯)**은 시작을 뜻하지만,
그 시작은 결코 매끄럽지 않다.
Tun (屯) signifies a beginning, but that beginning is anything but smooth.
둔괘는 아래에 우레(震),
위에 물(坎)이 놓인 형상으로,
움직이려는 힘 위를
험난함이 덮고 있는 구조이다.
The Hexagram Tun has thunder (Zhen 震) below and water (Kan 坎) above:
a structure in which hardship covers the force that is trying to move.
그래서 둔괘의 시작은
늘 더디고,
쉽게 흔들리며,
방향을 잡기 어렵다.
Thus the beginning indicated by Tun is always slow, easily shaken, and
hard to steer in a clear direction.
그러나 주역은 말한다.
“지금은 막혀 있으나,
근본의 기운은 살아 있다.”
Yet the I Ching says: “Though things are blocked now, the vital energy at
the root is alive.”
둔괘는 실패의 징조가 아니라,
기초를 세우라는 신호이다.
Tun is not a sign of failure; it is a signal to lay the foundations.
3. 핵심 지혜 Core wisdom
“지금은 나아갈 때가 아니라,
질서를 세울 때다.”
“Now is not the time to advance; it is the time to establish order.”
둔괘는 속도를 경계한다.
혼란한 출발선에서
앞서 달리려는 마음은
오히려 더 큰 좌절을 부른다.
Tun warns against speed. At a chaotic starting line, the urge to rush ahead
only invites greater frustration.
이 시기에는
계획보다 구조가,
열정보다 기준이,
의지보다 동반자가 중요하다.
At this stage, structure matters more than plans, standards more than passion,
and companions more than sheer willpower.
둔괘의 지혜는
멈춤 속에서 길을 만드는 것이다.
The wisdom of Tun is to create a path while remaining still.
4. 둔괘에 얽힌 고사 The old story behind Tun
「임금이 가장 먼저 한 일은 사람을 세우는 것이었다」
“The very first thing a ruler did was to appoint people.”
고대 중국에서 둔괘의 괘사는
‘이롭다, 제후를 세움이’라 말한다.
In ancient China, the judgment text for the Hexagram Tun says:
“It is beneficial to establish lords.”
새 나라를 세울 때,
가장 먼저 해야 할 일은
성을 쌓거나 군사를 모으는 것이 아니라,
사람을 분별하고
자리를 정하는 일이었다.
When founding a new state, the first priority is not building walls or gathering
troops, but discerning people and assigning them to their proper places.
혼란한 시작일수록
혼자 판단하지 말고,
각자의 역할을 분명히 해야
비로소 길이 열린다는 뜻이다.
The more chaotic the beginning, the less one should decide everything alone;
only when each person’s role is made clear does the way finally open.
둔괘는 말한다.
“시작의 혼란은
사람으로 정리된다.”
Tun declares: “The confusion of beginnings is resolved through people.”
5. 둔괘의 가르침 The teaching of the Hexagram Tun
둔괘의 가르침은 분명하다.
"서두르지 말고,
혼자 떠안지 말며,
기초 없는 전진을 경계하라."
The teaching of Tun is clear:
“Do not rush,
do not shoulder everything alone,
and beware of advancing without foundations.”
지금은 결과를 만들 때가 아니라,
버틸 수 있는 틀을 만들 때다.
Now is not the time to produce results,
but to build a framework that can endure.
도움을 구하는 것은 약함이 아니라
지혜이며,
정비는 후퇴가 아니라
장기적인 전진이다.
Seeking help is not a weakness,
but wisdom;
reorganization is not a retreat,
but a long-term advance.
둔괘의 군자는
빛나는 선두가 아니라,
흔들리지 않는 중심이 된다.
The noble person in Tun
is not a dazzling frontrunner,
but an unshakable center.
6. 묵상 한 줄 A line for meditation
“나는 지금,
앞으로 가야 할 단계에 있는가,
아니면 기초를 다시 세워야 할 시점에 있는가.”
“Am I now at a stage where I should move forward,
or at a moment when I must rebuild my foundations?”
