수(需)의 본 뜻은
이미 준비는 끝났으나,
아직 때가 오지 않아
멈춰 서 있는 상태를 말한다.
Hexagram 5: Xū (Waiting / Need)
The original meaning of Xū (需) is
a state in which everything is already prepared,
yet the right time has not yet arrived,
so you are standing still.
씨앗은 뿌려졌고,
의지는 충분하지만,
하늘에서 내려올 비를
기다려야 하는 순간.
The seed has been sown,
the will is more than enough,
but this is the moment
when you must wait
for the rain to fall from heaven.
수는 무기력이 아니다.
포기도 아니다.
움직일 수 있음에도
움직이지 않는 선택이다.
Xū is not lethargy.
It is not giving up.
It is the choice not to move,
even though you could move.
그래서 수는
참음이 아니라 신뢰이며,
멈춤이 아니라 준비다.
So Xū is
not mere endurance, but trust,
not a halt, but preparation.
몽이 ‘배우기 전의 혼미’라면,
수는 ‘나아가기 직전의 정지’다.
방향은 분명하나,
건널 강이 아직 앞에 있다.
If Méng (蒙) is “confusion before learning,”
then Xū is “stillness just before moving forward.”
The direction is clear,
but there is still a river left to cross ahead.

1. 수괘(需卦)의 이미지 The Image of Hexagram Xū (Waiting)
앞에 넓은 강이 흐르고
강물은 깊고 거세다
건너편에는 목적지가 보이지만
지금은 발을 들일 수 없다.
A wide river flows before you.
The water is deep and fierce.
You can see your destination on the opposite shore,
but right now you cannot set foot in the water.
하늘을 올려다보며
비와 바람의 흐름을 살피는 자리.
조급하면 휩쓸리고,
기다리면 길이 열린다.
Lifting your eyes to the sky,
you read the movement of wind and rain.
If you rush, you’ll be swept away;
if you wait, a path will open.
2. 수괘의 뜻 The Meaning of Hexagram Xū
**수(需)**는 ‘기다리다’는 뜻이다.
그러나 주역에서의 기다림은
마지못한 정지가 아니라,
의식적인 선택이다.
Xū (需) means “to wait.”
But in the I Ching, waiting
is not a forced standstill;
it is a conscious choice.
수괘는 아래에 하늘(乾),
위에 물(水)이 놓인 형상으로,
나아가려는 강한 힘이
위험과 마주한 구조다.
In the hexagram Xū, Heaven (Qián, 乾) is below
and Water is above—
a structure in which a strong drive to advance
is facing danger.
그래서 수의 시기에는
힘이 부족해서가 아니라,
때가 아니기 때문에
움직이지 말아야 한다.
Therefore, in the time of Xū,
you must not move not because you lack strength,
but because the time has not yet come.
주역은 이때를 이렇게 말한다.
“수는 믿음이 있으면 길하다.”
수괘는 행동보다
신뢰를 요구하는 시기다.
The I Ching speaks of this time as:
“In Xū, if there is trust, it is auspicious.”
The time of Xū calls not for action,
but for trust.
3. 핵심 지혜 Core Wisdom
“지금은 건너갈 때가 아니라,
강을 재는 시간이다.”
수괘는 조급함을 경계한다.
할 수 있다는 확신이
가장 큰 위험이 되기 때문이다.
“Now is not the time to cross the river;
it is the time to measure it.”
Hexagram Xū warns against impatience,
for the certainty that “I can do it”
can become the greatest danger.
In this period,
이 시기에는
속도보다 관찰이,
결단보다 준비가,
용기보다 절제가 필요하다.
In this period,
observation matters more than speed,
preparation more than decision,
restraint more than courage.
수의 지혜는
기다릴 줄 아는 자만이
결국 건넌다는 사실에 있다.
The wisdom of Xū lies in this:
only those who know how to wait
eventually make it across.
4. 수괘에 얽힌 고사 A Story Linked to Xū
「강을 얕보지 말라」
옛사람들은 큰 강 앞에서
함부로 발을 들이지 않았다.
“Do not make light of a river.”
In ancient times, people did not recklessly step into a great river.
물살을 보고,
날씨를 보고,
함께 건널 이를 기다렸다.
They watched the current,
watched the weather,
and waited for others to cross with them.
혼자 서둘러 건넌 자는
용감했으나 무모했고,
기다린 자는
늦었으나 살아남았다.
The one who hurried across alone
was brave, but reckless;
the one who waited
was late, but survived.
수괘는 말한다.
“큰일은 용기로 시작되지 않고,
판단으로 완성된다.”
Hexagram Xū says:
“Great undertakings do not begin with courage;
they are completed through sound judgment.”
5. 수괘의 가르침 The Teaching of Xū
수괘의 가르침은 분명하다.
“될 때까지 기다려라.”
지금 멈춘다고
기회가 사라지지 않는다.
The teaching of Xū is clear:
“Wait until the time is ripe.”
Stopping now
does not make your opportunity disappear.
오히려 성급하면
기회가 무너진다.
기다림은 약함이 아니며,
아직 움직이지 않는 것은
패배가 아니다.
On the contrary, if you rush,
the opportunity collapses.
Waiting is not weakness,
and not yet moving
is not defeat.
수괘의 군자는
가장 먼저 움직이는 사람이 아니라,
가장 안전하게 도착하는 사람이다.
The true “noble person” of Hexagram Xū
is not the one who moves first,
but the one who arrives the safest.
6. 묵상 한 줄 A Line for Meditation
“나는 지금,
때를 기다리고 있는가,
아니면 불안 때문에
움직이고 싶은가.”
“Right now, am I
truly waiting for the right time,
or do I simply want to move
because I feel anxious?”
