The fundamental meaning of Meng (蒙)
is like a dawn shrouded in thick fog,
a state in which the outlines of things are not yet clear—
an early ignorance in which one wishes to learn,
yet does not even know what should be learned.
Meng is ignorance,
but it is not corruption; it is immaturity.
One does not yet know,
yet the possibility of coming to know is still alive.
Therefore, Meng is not a shameful condition.
It is a place that waits for teaching,
the moment when questions are first born.
If Zhun (屯) is “the confusion of beginnings,”
then Meng is “the confusion that follows the beginning.”
Form has already appeared,
but meaning and direction have not yet been found.

산아래 안개로 앞을 가늠할 수 없는 모습( A scene where fog below the mountain makes it impossible to see what lies ahead.)
The Image of the Meng Hexagram (蒙卦)
Water pooled beneath a mountain.
Mist covers the mountain’s slopes,
obscuring the way forward.
A quiet yet overwhelming landscape—
unable to move ahead by one’s own power,
a place that waits for light.
The Meaning of the Meng Hexagram
Meng (蒙) means “youthful” or “undeveloped,”
but in the I Ching, ignorance
is not something to be condemned.
The Meng hexagram is formed with
water (Kan, 坎) below
and mountain (Gen, 艮) above—
a structure in which the impulse to move
collides with stoppage and obstruction.
Thus, in the state of Meng,
the more one relies on one’s own judgment,
the more easily one loses the way;
the more one advances without experience,
the greater the danger becomes.
The I Ching describes this moment as follows:
“Meng is auspicious only with instruction.”
Rather than awakening on its own,
Meng is a time that opens through learning.
Core Wisdom
“Now is not the time to produce answers,
but the time to learn how to ask.”
The Meng hexagram warns against arrogance,
for the feeling of knowing just a little
often becomes the greatest obstacle.
In this period,
questions matter more than conclusions,
guidance more than speed,
and a teacher more than self-assertion.
The wisdom of Meng begins
with the courage to admit not knowing.
A Classical Story Associated with Meng
“The teacher did not approach first.”
The Judgment of the Meng hexagram states:
“Without being sought, there is no teaching.”
In ancient times, teachers
did not go searching for students.
Learning was a door that opened
only to those who earnestly sought it.
To those who do not ask, there is no instruction;
wisdom offered to the unprepared
only deepens confusion.
The Meng hexagram tells us:
“Teaching is not coercion,
but a response to sincere request.”
The Teaching of the Meng Hexagram
The teaching of Meng is clear:
“Do not pretend to know.
Do not struggle to awaken alone.
Follow the order of learning.”
This is not a time for judgment,
but a time for absorption.
Listening to advice is not dependence,
and learning is not falling behind.
The noble person of Meng
is not the one who is wise,
but the one who learns well.
A Line for Reflection
“Right now,
am I mistaking myself for someone who already knows,
or am I truly beginning to learn?”
