대한민국 국민 대다수가 아는 동요 '섬집아기'는 한인현 작시, 이흥렬 작곡의
창작동요이다.
The Korean children's song "Island Baby" (섬집아기) is a creative children's
song with lyrics by Han In-hyeon and music composed by Lee Heung-ryeol.
It is widely known among South Koreans.
한국전쟁 당시 초등학교 교사였던 '한인현' 씨가 지은 동시로 부산에서 피난살이
를 하던 어느날 산책 중 해변 어느 오두막집을 지나치게 되었는데 문득 안을 들여
다보니 집에는 아기만 곤히 자고 있었고 아이 어머니가 낯선 사람이 집에 온 걸
보고 놀라서 굴 바구니를 던져두고 모래톱을 뛰어오는 광경을 보고 지은 시라고
전해진다.
During the Korean War, Han In-hyeon, who was an elementary school teacher
at the time, wrote the lyrics as a poem. One day, while taking a walk in Busan,
where he was living as a refugee, he passed by a small hut near the beach.
Peeking inside, he saw a baby sleeping alone. At that moment, the baby's mother,
seeing a stranger near her home, was so startled that she dropped her basket of
oysters and ran toward the hut across the sandy shore.
This touching scene is said to have inspired the poem.
왠지 노래를 들으면 마음이 싸해지며 알지못할 서러움에 한방울 눈물을 자아내게
만드는 묘한 매력이 있는 노래로 많은 어머니들이 자장가로 불러주는 곡이다.
There is something deeply moving about the song—something that stirs an
inexplicable sorrow and even brings tears to the eyes.
Many mothers sing it as a lullaby for their children.
'섬집 아기'는 밝고 희망적인 내용의 동요가 아님에도 집에 혼자 남겨져 잠들은
아기의 모습과 굴 바구니를 다 채우지 못하고 달려오는 엄마의 모습을 통해,
어려운 현실과 엄마의 애틋한 마음을 서정적으로 표현한 곡으로 이곡을 불러주면
많은 아기들이 눈물을 흘리며 엄마를 찾는다고 한다.
Although "Island Baby" does not have a bright or hopeful theme, it poetically
expresses the harsh reality of life and a mother's deep love through the image
of a baby left alone at home and a mother rushing back with an unfinished basket
of oysters.
It is said that when the song is sung, many babies tear up and instinctively long
for their mothers.

When Mother goes to gather oysters in the island’s shade,
The baby stays behind, watching the house alone.
Soothed by the lullaby sung by the sea,
The baby slowly drifts into sleep, resting on its arm.

The cries of the seagulls make the mother’s heart restless.
With her basket of oysters still unfilled, balanced on her head,
She runs across the sandy path back home.
