한국의 전통 민요인 '아리랑(Arirang)'은 한국 민족의 정서와 역사,

문화를 고스란히 담고 있는 노래로, 오랜 세월 구전(口傳)으로 전해

내려온 대표적인 서사 민요이다.

 

Arirang, a traditional Korean folk song, is a representative lyrical

epic that encapsulates the emotions, history, and culture of the

Korean people.

It has been orally passed down through generations for centuries.

 

유네스코는 2012년 아리랑을 인류무형문화유산으로 등재하였고

'아리랑'의 기원은 불분명하나 수백 년 전부터 불려온 것으로, 조선

후기(18~19세기) 문헌에도 등장되며 대표적으로, 조선 말기 실학자

유득공의 『경도잡지(京都雜誌)』나, 1860년대 『열하일기』에도 언급

된 바 있다.

 

In 2012, UNESCO inscribed Arirang on the Representative List of

the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

 

The origin of Arirang is unclear, but it has been sung for hundreds of

years and appears in historical documents from the late Joseon

Dynasty (18th–19th century).

 

Notably, it is mentioned in late Joseon scholar Yu Deuk-gong’s 

Gyeongdo Japji (Miscellaneous Records of the Capital) and in 

Yeolha Ilgi (The Jehol Diary) from the 1860s.

 

'아리랑'의 어원은 분명히 밝혀지지 않았지만, 다음과 같은 설이 있다.
고어로 ‘아리’는 아름답다, ‘랑’은 사랑하는 이 또는 곡조를 의미하며

가사의 내용은 이별, 한(恨), 기다림, 사랑, 고난 등을 노래하고 있으며
후렴구인 “아리랑 아리랑 아라리요”는 삶의 고단함을 넘고자 하는

정서를 나타내고 있다.

 

Although the etymology of “Arirang” is not definitively known, some

theories suggest that in archaic Korean, “Ari” means “beautiful” and 

“Rang” refers to a beloved person or a melody.

 

The lyrics commonly express themes of separation, sorrow (han),

longing, love, and hardship.

The refrain, “Arirang, Arirang, Arariyo,” reflects the emotional will to

overcome life’s difficulties.

 

'아리랑'은 지역별로 강원도에는 '정선 아리랑'이 있으며, 경상남도 밀양

에는 밀양 아리랑' 전라남도 지도에는 '진도 아리랑'이 전해진다.

 

There are many regional versions of Arirang, including Jeongseon

Arirang in Gangwon Province, Miryang Arirang in South Gyeongsang

Province, and Jindo Arirang in South Jeolla Province.

 

소개하는 '아리랑'은 본조 아리랑으로 초등학교 4학년 교과서에도 등재

되어있을 만큼 한국인의 서름과 한 및 사랑이 농축되어 있는 민요이다.

 

The version introduced here is Bonjo Arirang, which is so representative

that it is even included in the 4th-grade Korean elementary school textbook.

This folk song is deeply imbued with the Korean people's sorrow, and love.

 

뜻은 몰라도 계속 듣고 있으면 알지 못할 오묘한 그리움과 설움이 느껴지는,

가슴을 잔잔하게 울리는 천상의 음악이다.

Even without understanding the meaning, one can feel a mysterious sense

of longing and sorrow just by listening. It is a heavenly piece of music that

gently stirs the heart.
