이 추악한 세상에서 선행이여 빛을 발산하라(So shines a good deed in a naughty world)

 

염라대왕 심판

 

 

현재 우리나라는 대통령의 탄핵 시비로 하루도 조용한 날이 없으며

부동산 전세사기, 국민연금 등 민생에 관한 일에는 어느 누구하나

나서서 해결하려는 의지는 찾아 볼 수 가 없는 현실이니 매일 같이

사건 사고가 터져도 책임지는 사람은 없는 도덕 불감증으로 가득찬

이 나라가 어찌 되려는가 걱정이 앞선다.

 

These days, our country is in constant turmoil due to controversies

surrounding the impeachment of the president.

 

Meanwhile, issues directly affecting people’s livelihoods, such as

real estate fraud and the national pension system, remain unresolved,

as no one seems willing to take responsibility or find solutions.

 

Even with incidents and scandals breaking out daily, there is no one

held accountable, and the country is drowning in moral indifference.

This makes me deeply worried about where we are headed.

 

 

해결해야 될 현안이 태산 같은데 여야는 서로 네탓이라며 자신들의

이익과 관련되지 않는 일에는 뒷전이고 착하고 못난 백성은 하소연

할 곳도 없다.

 

Despite the mountain of pressing issues that need to be addressed,

the ruling and opposition parties are too busy blaming each other,

prioritizing their own interests while neglecting matters unrelated to

their personal gains.

 

Meanwhile, the ordinary, honest citizens have nowhere to turn to

voice their grievances.

 

 

세계에서 주변국가의 침략없이 자멸할 수 있는 나라중에 내가

사는 대한민국이 포함되는 불행한일은 꿈에서도 있으면

안되겠지만 이런 식으로 무책임과 도덕적 해이,자기와 자기

가족만 생각하는 이기심이 만연된다면 타국의 침공이 없어도

스스로 멸망하는 부끄러운 나라로 자리매김할 수 밖에 없을까봐

걱정이 앞선다.

 

It is unthinkable, even in my worst nightmares, that South Korea,

the country I live in, could become one of the few nations in the

world to self-destruct without external invasion.

 

However, if this climate of irresponsibility, moral laxity, and

selfishness—where people care only about themselves and

their families—continues to prevail, I fear that we may become

a disgraceful nation that collapses on its own, even without

foreign aggression.

 

 

"장아함경"에 보면 지옥에 대한 설명이 있는데 땅아래로 1백60

만리를 내려가면 아비지옥이라는 무간지옥이 있는데 깊이와

넓이가 모두 80만리라고 한다.

 

The "Jangahagam Sutra" describes hell in great detail.

It states that if one descends 1.6 million ri beneath the ground,

they will find Avīci Hell, the lowest and most unrelenting inferno,

which spans 800,000 ri in both depth and width.

 

 

이지옥에서 70만리를 올라오면 극열지옥과 열지옥이 있고

그다음은 대규환지옥과 규환지옥,중합지옥과 혹승지옥,

등활지옥등 7개 지옥이 있어서 무간지옥 까지 합하면 8대

지옥이 된다.

 

Rising 700,000 ri from Avīci Hell, one encounters Extreme Heat

Hell and Heat Hell, followed by the Great Screaming Hell,

Screaming Hell, Crushing Hell, Blistering Hell, Reviving Hell,

and Uplifting Hell. Including Avīci Hell, these make up the Eight

Great Hells.

 

 

지옥을 다스리는 10대 명부(冥府) 대왕이 있는데 제 1전이

진광대왕,2전이 초강대왕,제3전이 송제대왕,제4전이 오관대왕,

제5전이 염라대왕,제6전이 변성대왕,제7전이 태산대왕,제8전이

평등대왕,제9전이 도시대왕,제10전이 전륜대왕으로 나누어져있다.

 

There are also the Ten Kings of the Underworld who govern

these realms:

1. King Qin Guang
2. King Chu Jiang
3. King Song Di
4. King Wu Guan
5. King Yan Luo
6. King Bian Cheng
7. King Tai Shan
8. King Ping Deng
9. King Du Shi
10. King Zhuan Lun

 

필자가 굳이 지옥을 언급하는 이유는 힘없고 서러운 삶을 묵묵히

자기의 업으로 생각하고 착하게 살아온 대다수의 국민들이 다소

라도 위안을 받았으면 하는 생각과 자기의 사리사욕을 채우느라

나라의 안위는 생각치 않고 우매한 백성들을 세치 혓바닥으로

농락한 죄가 얼마나 큰지 각성하라는 의미로 이글을 쓰는바

잘난 사람 잘난대로 깨닫고 못난 사람 못난대로 느껴주었으면

하는 바람이다.

 

The reason I bring up hell is that I hope the many powerless,

suffering citizens who have endured hardship with quiet resilience

can find some solace.

 

At the same time, I want to remind those who exploit their positions

for personal gain—deceiving the ignorant masses with their silver

tongues—just how grave their sins truly are.

 

 

명부를 총괄하시는 염라대왕이 감독하는"대도산지옥"은 도산지옥 부근

산천에 있는 바위나 자갈이나 수목이나 풀잎까지라도 모두 머리채를 잡아

집어던지면 전신의 가죽과 골절이 칼날에 꽃혀 피가 흐르는 지옥인바

이지옥에는 필요없이 산천이나 남의 소유물에 불을 놓으며 산천임야를

태우고 남의 재산을 태워 손해를 주고 모든 짐승의 목숨을 태워 죽인자를

형벌하는 지옥이다.

 

In the "Great Knife Mountain Hell," overseen by King Yan Luo, even the

rocks, pebbles, trees, and leaves of the surrounding mountains seize

sinners by the hair and hurl them into blades, flaying their skin and

shattering their bones.

 

This hell is meant for those who set fire to mountains and forests,

destroying natural resources and causing harm to the lives and

property of others.

 

 

살생하기를 상습적으로 하는 자들을 형벌하는 초강대왕이 감독하는

"금수지옥"이 있는데 폭과 깊이가 각각 2만리인 이곳은 죄인이 들어오면

큰폭풍이 일어나 죄인들이 바람에 날려 앞뒤로 뒤집어지는데 나무나

잎사귀가 날카로운 칼날로 되어 죄인들의 전신을 찔러서 수족이 끊어지고

머리나 몸이 토막토막 잘라지면서 강철로 된 뭇새들이 죄인의 머리에 올라

앉아 쪼아먹는 고통스런 지옥이다. 1순위는 단연 김정은 일 것이다.

 

For habitual killers, there is the "Beast Hell," supervised by King Chu Jiang.

This hell is 20,000 ri deep and wide. Once a sinner enters,

a powerful storm lifts them into the air, violently tossing them around.

 

The trees and leaves, sharp as blades, tear into their flesh, severing

their limbs and bodies. Meanwhile, iron-beaked birds land on their heads,

pecking at them mercilessly. Without a doubt, the first person to be

condemned here would be Kim Jong-un.

 

 

남을 음해하고 악독한 욕설을 하는자들을 형벌하는 한빙지옥,관리로서

권리를 남용하여 백성에게 민폐를 끼친 자들을 형벌하는 "함노소지옥"이

있으니 잘난 국회의원들과 고위직 공무원들이 제일 먼저 가야 할 곳이다.

 

Those who slander and curse others face judgment in the "Cold Ice Hell."

Corrupt officials who abuse their power and burden the people are

sentenced to the "Pit of Lamentation Hell," which should be the first

destination for self-serving politicians and high-ranking bureaucrats.

 

 

실체가 없는것, 또는 보지못한 것을 분명히 본것 처럼 이간질 하며 거짓말을

하여 남을 속이는 죄인들을 다스리는 "아란소지옥"은 죄인들의 눈알을 후벼

내어 빼는 지옥으로 국회에서 위증을 한 사람들이 담청대상일 것이다.

또한 유언비어를 지어 널리 유포한 죄인에게 가해지는 무쇠로 된 갑옷을

입혀 죄인을 졸라매는 "철의소지옥"도 권장할 만 하다.

 

Liars who deceive and manipulate others are cast into "Aransho Hell,"

where their eyes are gouged out as punishment.

 

Those who spread malicious rumors and false information suffer in the

"Iron Robe Hell," where they are bound tightly in heavy metal armor.

 

 

고리대금업을 하는 사람들이 알아두어야할 지옥이 "저주소지옥"인데

구더기와 좀벌레들이 죄인의 살과 피를 빨아먹는다 한다.

 

For usurers, there is "Loan Shark Hell," where maggots and worms

feast on their flesh and blood.

 

 

대다수의 정치가와 국회의원들,기업가등, 소위 잘나간다는 지도층 사람들

에게 추천하고 싶은 곳이 오관대왕이 관할하는 "내하지옥"으로 넓이 5치쯤

되는 아주 좁은 다리를 죄인들이 건너가게 하는데 옥졸들이 철퇴를 들고

사정없이 두드리면 죄인들이 정신없이 건너다 다리아래로 떨어지게 된다.

 

For most politicians, corporate executives, and other so-called elites,

the "Inner River Hell," governed by King Wu Guan, is a fitting place.

 

There, sinners must cross an extremely narrow bridge only five inches

wide while being struck relentlessly by iron clubs.

 

As they struggle, they fall into the river below, where venomous snakes

devour them, turning the waters into a sea of blood.

 

 

다리 중간에는 독사가 입을 벌리고 건너오는 죄인을 물어 뜯으려하고 다리

건너편에는 사나운 개가 죄인을 물어뜯으려고 으르릉거리며 짖고 있으며

다리 아래 흐르는 물로 떨어지는 죄인들을 독사들이 달려들어 뜯어먹으므로

그 물이 피바다로 변하는 지옥으로 남을 속이는 거짓말로 일삼아 일생토록

여러가지 악업을 짓는자들을 형벌하는 지옥이다.

 

In the middle of the bridge, venomous snakes lie in wait with their mouths

open, ready to bite and tear into the sinners attempting to cross.

 

On the other side, ferocious dogs growl and snarl, eager to sink their teeth

into the damned. Below the bridge, a river flows, but as the sinners fall,

the venomous snakes in the water swarm them, devouring their flesh until

the river turns into a sea of blood.

 

This hell is reserved for those who spend their lives deceiving others with

lies and committing countless wicked deeds.

 

 

불량식품업자에게 어울리는 지옥은 "유도할질소지옥"과 "관약소지옥"인데

전자는 사람이 사용하는 기름에다 딴것을 섞어서 기름같이 파는 자들을 형벌

하는 지옥으로 미끄러운 기름을 바른 곳에다 죄인을 쫒아서 달음질 시키어

미끄러져 떨어지게하는 지옥이며, 후자는 그릇된 약품을 속이여 파는 자들

에게 독한 사약을 먹이여 고통을 받게하는 지옥이다.

 

Fraudulent food producers belong in "Deceptive Oil Hell" and "Poisonous

Medicine Hell." In the former, sinners are forced to run on a slippery,

oil-coated surface until they fall. In the latter, those who sell counterfeit

medicines are fed lethal poison.

 

 

활과 총을 쏘아 짐승을 잡고 독약으로 물고기를 잡는자들이 처벌받는

"규환지옥"은 죄인의 배를 가르고 오장육부를 잘게 썰어서 간은 독사로 하여금

먹게하고 창자는 개로 하여금 먹게하는 지옥으로 요즈음 밀엽꾼들이 새겨야할

지옥이라 하겠다.

 

Poachers and those who use poison to catch fish are sent to the "Screaming

Hell," where their stomachs are split open, their intestines torn apart, and

their livers fed to serpents. Modern-day illegal hunters should take this

to heart.

 

 

지옥을 모두 헤아려 보니 모두 136개가 되는데 모든지옥이 지옥의 이름에

걸맞게 지어져 있는데 다 읽어보니 필자도 지옥에서 벗어날 수 없는 죄를

지었으니 쇠고기나 개고기를 먹는 자들을 형벌하는 지옥이 눈에 들어오는데

이름하여 "마취유혈소지옥"으로 맷돌에다가 죄인의 몸을 갈아 피를 내는

지옥이다.

 

In total, there are 136 different hells, each perfectly suited to the sins committed.

As I read through them, I realize that I, too, cannot escape punishment.

One particular hell stands out to me: the "Grinding Blood Hell," where those

who consume beef and dog meat are crushed under millstones until their bodies

are reduced to blood.

 

 

필자야 염라전에서 최소한 단백질 보충하느라 달리 방법이 없었다고 떼라도

써봐야지 하면서 애써 위안을 해보려하지만 내가 지은죄가 어찌 그뿐으로

끝나겠는가?

 

Perhaps, in my defense, I could argue before King Yan Luo that I had no choice

but to consume meat for protein. But that alone won’t absolve me of my sins.

 

 

돌이켜보니 내가 거쳐야할 지옥이 136곳중 최소한 10여곳은 확실하니 사람

노릇하기가 진정 어렵도다. 남의 허물을 지적하다보니 나의 허물이 너무

큰 것을 새삼 깨닫고 새삼 놀라게 된다.

 

Reflecting on my own life, I realize that of the 136 hells, at least ten are

reserved for me. It is truly difficult to live righteously.

 

While pointing out the faults of others, I have come to see my own

shortcomings as even greater. This realization leaves me astonished.

 

 

제10전 전륜대왕 왕청으로 통하는 '부의교'란 중간다리에 올라서 바라보면

건너편 언덕에 다음과 같은 시가 쓰여져 있다한다.

 

At the "Bridge of Penance," which leads to King Zhuan Lun’s domain,

one can see the following verses written on the opposite hill:

 

"사람이라 하기는 쉬우나 사람되기는 어려우니 한걸음 더

사람 됨이 어렵다 함을 다시 걱정할지어다.

 

아이가 막 태어남에 문득 우는소리를 아느냐 모르느냐.

한번 인간에 떨어지면 만 가지 근심이 됨이로다.

 

선하지 못함은 오히려 천일토록 근심이 되니 방망이로 수없이 때려 악업의

줄을 끊치 않으면 문득 옛 땅에 한사람도 받아 나가기가 어려우리라."
