우리의 불청객 '질병'에 대하여(Our Unwelcome Guest: Disease)

몇년 전 혈액암으로 잠시 목회활동을 중단하고 암치료를 받던 홍소윤 목사가
오랜 만에 목회를 연다는 소식에 많은 친구들이 반가워하며 응원 메세지를
보내는 등 돌아오는 일요일에 즐거운 만남을 기대하고 있던 중 경배로 부터
받은 전화는 별로 좋은 소식이 아니였다.

A few years ago, Pastor Hong So-yoon temporarily stepped away from
ministry to undergo treatment for leukemia.

When news spread that she would finally be returning to ministry after a long

hiatus, many friends were delighted and sent messages of support, eagerly
looking forward to reuniting with her this coming Sunday.

However, the call I received from Kyung-bae was not good news.

 

오랜 암치료로 인한 체력저하와 항암치료로 인한 휴유증 탓인지 목소리가
힘이 없고 많이 아픈 것 같다고 한 말에 가슴이 아파온다.

Hearing that her voice lacked strength and that she seemed to be in great pain,
likely due to the aftereffects of chemotherapy and her weakened physical
condition, broke my heart.

 

74년 대학 입학 초에 방송 활동을 하면서 만난 귀여운 병아리 새내기 '홍소윤'

은 너무나 순수하고 착한 여학생이었다.

When I first met Hong So-yoon in the early years of college in 1974 during
a broadcasting activity, she was a bright and innocent freshman—a lovable,
pure-hearted young woman.

 

 

조그만 올챙이 같은 약한 생명체에도 연민의 정을 보내며 귀엽다고 살포시
웃는 그런 착한 친구였다.

 

She was the kind of friend who would smile gently at even the smallest,
most fragile creatures, like tiny tadpoles, feeling sympathy and affection for them.

 

 

우리 친구들도 사회생활 하면서 각자 여러가지 우여곡절을 겪으면서 여태 것
버티며 살아왔지만 그녀도 어머님과 동생을 일찍 여의며 상처 뿐인 아픈 가슴을

하나님에게 모든 것을 맡기며 자기보다 못한 많은 사람들을 위로하며 하나님께

인도한 선한 목자이다.

 

Like all of us, she has endured many ups and downs in life. Having lost her
mother and younger sibling at an early age, she entrusted her wounded heart
to God and devoted herself to comforting and guiding those in need,
becoming a compassionate shepherd of faith.

 

나도 당뇨병으로 병원에 갈 때면 느끼는 것이지만 왠 아픈 사람이 그렇게 많은지?
그로 인해 다소 위안을 받기도 하지만 다들 그렇게 측은해 보일 수가 없다.

Whenever I visit the hospital for my diabetes treatment, I am struck by how
many people are suffering.
At times, I find some comfort in knowing I am not alone, yet I cannot help but
feel deep sympathy for them.

 

나의 하나 뿐인 여동생인 '원이'도 암으로 머나먼 호주에서 생을 마감했고 미국
에서 함께 근무했던 정비사의 아내인 유나 어머니도 유방암으로 세상을 하직했고
대한항공에서 가장 친했던 '오창우' 씨도 60세도 못 넘기고 어느날 갑자기 원인도
모르는 질병으로 하나 둘씩 내 곁을 떠났다.

My only sister, Woni, passed away from cancer in faraway Australia. Yuna’s mother,
the wife of a mechanic I worked with in the U.S., succumbed to breast cancer.
My dearest friend from Korean Air, Oh Chang-woo, left this world before even
reaching 60 due to an unknown illness.
One by one, I have watched those dear to me depart from my side.

 

질병에 대한 원인을 성경에서 찾아보면 죄로 인한 것,사탄의 시험에 의한 것,
하나님의 영광을 위한 것 등이 아닐까 싶다.

When we seek explanations for disease in the Bible, we find causes such as sin,
Satan’s trials, and sometimes, God’s glory.

 

아담과 하와가 선악과를 따 먹은 후 아담은 구백 삼십세까지 삶을 영위했지만
결국 죽었으며 그 결과 모든 인간이 이 원죄로 인하여 질병을 비롯한 다른 고통
속에 시달리게 된 것 같다.

 

After Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil,
Adam lived for 930 years but eventually died. Because of this original sin,
all of humanity has suffered from sickness and other afflictions.

 

하나님의 축복을 받고 살아가던 욥은 사탄의 시험으로 인하여 모든 재산과 자녀
를 잃고 몸에는 심한 욕창으로 고통을 받았으며,

Job, who had once lived under God's blessing, lost all his wealth and children
due to Satan's trials and suffered terribly from painful sores.

 

날 때 부터 소경인 사람에 대한 제자들의 질문에 이 사람이나 그 부모의 죄가
아니라 그에게서 하나님의 하시는 일을 나타내고자하심이라고 답변하신 예수님
말씀 등 으로 설명할수 있겠다.

Jesus, when asked by his disciples whether a man born blind was suffering due
to his or his parents' sin, answered that it was neither—but rather,
so that God's work might be revealed through him.

 

 

불경 중 '열반경'에서는 "몸의 병에는 수(水)에 의한 것과 풍(風)에 의한 것과
열(熱)에 의한 것 등 잡다한 병과 외적 원인으로 인한 것이 있다.

Buddhist scriptures also offer explanations for disease. In the Nirvana Sutra,
it is said that illness can stem from water, wind, heat, various disorders, or
external causes.

 

외적 원인 으로는 "분수에 맞지 않는 일을 무리하게 하는 경우와 과실로 인하여
떨어진 경우와 칼과 몽둥이와 기왓장과 돌에 상처를 입는 경우와 도깨비에 에게
홀릴 경우가있다" 하여 즉 "병이란 몸을 성립 시키고 있는 지.수.화.풍의 4대가
독사와 같이 서로 조화되지 못하는 상태가 되는 것"으로 설명하고 있으며,

External causes include overexertion, accidents, injuries from weapons or stones,
or even being possessed by spirits.

Essentially, illness arises when the four fundamental elements of the body—
earth, water, fire, and wind—fall out of harmony, like venomous serpents
entangled in conflict.

 

 

'유마경'에서는 "지금 나의 이병은 모두가 전생의 망상이나 뒤바뀐 생각이나 번뇌
에서 생긴 것" 이라며 병의 원인이 마음에 있음을 강조했다.

In the Vimalakirti Sutra, it is said: “My current illness is caused by delusions,
distorted thoughts, and worldly attachments from my past lives.”
This emphasizes that the root of disease lies in the mind.

 

아무튼 한평생을 살면서 병을 앓아보지 않는 사람은 한 사람도 없을 정도로 질병
은 인생의 원치 않은 동반자임에 틀림 없다.

Indeed, over the course of a lifetime, no one is entirely free from illness—
it is an unwelcome companion to all of us.

 

결국은 암등의 질병으로 억울하게 세상을 등진 사람이 어디 한둘이랴!

How many people have had their lives unfairly taken by diseases like cancer?

 

사도 '바울' 같은 이는 자기 몸을 찌르는 가시같은 병이 있었지만 자신이 교만하게
될까봐 주신 하나님의 은혜로 그 질병을 즐거이 받아 드렸고

The Apostle Paul had an affliction that he described as a "thorn in his flesh,"
but he embraced it as a grace from God, lest he become arrogant.

 

 

'보왕삼매론'에서는"몸에 병 없기를 바라지 말라. 몸에 병이 없으면 탐욕이 생기기
쉽나니... 병고로써양약을 삼으라" 라고 설파하고 있지 않은가!

In the Buddhist text Bo-wang Sammaeron, it is written:
"Do not wish for a body free from illness. Without sickness, greed easily arises.
Let suffering be your medicine."

 

그러나 범인으로서 어찌 사도 바울 같이, 또는 부처님 처럼 질병 및 죽음에 초연할
수있으리오.

But how can ordinary people remain detached from illness and death like the
Apostle Paul or the Buddha?

 

혹자는 암 등의 불치병은 현대 문명 제일주의가 초래한 재앙이라고 말한다.
그렇다면 우리 모두 할 것 없이 공범이다. 자기 및 자기 가족 만 잘 먹고 잘 살자는
극단의 이기주의 및 인간성 상실이 전 우주를 병 들게 한다.

Some argue that incurable diseases like cancer are a consequence of modern
civilization’s obsession with material progress.
If that is the case, then we are all complicit. Extreme selfishness, where people
care only for themselves and their families, has sickened the entire universe.

 

 

불교에서는 '인드라망'이라는 그물이 전 우주를 덮고 있어 어느 한 곳의 그물코를
건드리면 그 파장이 전 우주에 퍼진다는 것이다.

Buddhism teaches that the cosmic net called Indra’s Net spreads across
the universe—if even a single knot is touched, its vibration ripples through
the entire cosmos.

 

지구 어느 한곳에서 피어나는 조그마한 웃음은 전 우주를 기쁘게하고, 어느 곳에
떨어진 한 방울의 눈물은 전 세계를 슬프게 하는 것이리라.

A single smile blossoming in one part of the world can bring joy to the entire
universe.
A single teardrop falling somewhere can bring sorrow to all of humanity.

 

우리도 타인들을 위하여 사랑의 마음을 전하며 슬픔에 처한 이들에게 위로와
연민의 정을 보인다면 '인드라망'의 그물이 온 세상을 자비와 사랑의 끈으로 연결
되어 굳이 하나님과 부처님에게 기도를 안해도 평화롭고 행복한 세상을 창조할
수 있으리라.

If we extend love to others and show compassion to those in suffering,
then Indra’s Net will weave the world together with kindness and love.
In doing so, we can create a peaceful and happy world without needing to
pray to God or Buddha.

 

홍목사님의 쾌유를 바라며 지금도 하루하루를 질병의 고통속에서 투병하시는
분들의 쾌유도 빌며 이글을 바친다.

Praying for Pastor Hong’s Full Recovery. With this, I dedicate this writing to all
those battling the pain of illness, wishing for their recovery.

 

 

"제 안에 주님을 모시기에 합당치 아니오나 한 말씀만 하소서. 제 영혼이 곧 나으리다."

"Lord, I am not worthy to have You enter under my roof, but only say the word,
and my soul shall be healed."



"땀 흘려 씨뿌림은 의식을 위함이고

즐거이 보시함은 부귀를 위함이며

자비로 행동함은 장수를 위함이요

학문을 연마함은 지혜를 위함이니

모든 병 고치려면 마음을 안정하라"

"Sweating as you sow seeds sustains the body,
Giving with joy brings prosperity,
Acting with compassion leads to longevity,
Pursuing knowledge grants wisdom,
To heal all illness, one must first calm the heart."
