최고의 화장품은 무엇인가?(What are the best cosmetics?)

언젠가 미국 펜실베니아 주립대 '샘 리차드' 교수가

진행하는 유튜브 방송에서 피부색에 대하여 각국의

학생들의 의견을 나누는 모습이 방영되었다.

​One day, in a YouTube broadcast hosted by Professor 

Sam Richards of Pennsylvania State University, 

a video of students from different countries sharing 

their opinions about skin color was aired.

 

한국여인들의 성형에 대한 관심이 타국에 비해 비교적

높았고 남성들의 화장하는 모습도 눈길을 끌었는데

동서를 막론하고 미(美)에 대한 열망은 사그러질줄

모르는 것 같다.

Korean women's interest in plastic surgery was relatively 

high compared to other countries, and the sight of men

putting on makeup also attracted attention, and regardless

of whether it is East or West, the desire for beauty seems

unabated.

 

모든 남자들이 예쁜 여인들에게 눈길이 가는 것은 너무나

당연한 일이고 결혼 조건도 재력,학력.권력 등을 제치고

미모를 우선으로 한다는 뉴스를 보니 미(美)에 대한

세간의 관심이 대단함을 실감할 수 있다.

미인을 나타내는 한자어로 경국지색(傾國之色). 만고상청

(萬古常靑),요조숙녀(窈窕淑女),절대가인(絶對佳人),해어화

(解語花),화용월태(花容月態),침어낙안(沈漁落雁) 등이

사용되는데 경국지색이나 침어낙안의 대표적인 미인으로

서시를 꼽을 수 있겠다.

서시에게서 나온 듯 싶다.

'해당미수각(海棠未睡覺)' 즉, '잠이 덜 깬 해당화' 가

아닌가?

그때 부터 해당화는 '수화(睡花-잠자는 꽃)

라는 다른 애칭을 가지게 되었다 한다.

'에로스'의 연인 '프쉬케'가 시어머니가 될 '아프로디테'의

미움을 받고 저승으로 심부름을 떠났는데 저승의

신 '하데스'의 아내인 '페르세포네'에게 가서 신이 쓰는

화장품을 얻어오는 일 이었다.

우여곡절 끝에 화장품을 손에 넣었으나 여인의 호기심을

참치 못하여 상자를 여는 순간 잠의 신 '휘프노스' 에게서

얻어둔 잠의 씨들이 일제히 날아와 '프쉬케'를 잠들게 한다.

집어넣어 골탕을 먹이려 했는데 가여운 여인 '프쉬케'가

잠의 희생양이 된 것도 수면이 신들의 화장품을 대신 할
정도로 훌륭한 가치가 있다는 사실을 은연중 나타낸 것은

아닐지?

결국 '에로스(사랑)'와 '프쉬케(나비/마음)'가 마침내 결합하여

결혼에 성공하니 가수 '현철'의 가사대로

"사랑은 나비 인가봐!" 가 새삼 이해가 되는 듯 하다.

예쁘다는 거울의 답변을 듣고 공주를 죽이려 하지

않었던가?

거울에 비친 아름다운 자신의 얼굴을 바라보며 화장하는

낙으로 살았다하는 엘리쟈베스여왕도 세월이 흘러가면서

유리거울에 비친 자신의 늙은 모습에 화가 나서 거울 판매

금지령 까지 내렸다하니 늙음을 퇴치할 화장품은 아직까지

없는 듯하다.

버리고 뱀의 몸에 들어가 바다에 수장시키고 나온 사이 '신선도'

를 수행하던 흉칙하게 생긴 사람이 버려진 몸으로 알고 자기몸

을 버려두고 대사의 몸을 취했던 것인데 대사는 자기 몸을 찾을

수 없어 부득불 그 추한 사람의 몸을 취한 까닭이라 한다.

Like this, many people care about their appearance, 

but they don't seem to be interested in inner beauty.

Looking at the face depicted in 'Dharma Painting', it is so ugly

that it is hard to believe that it is the face of Master Bodhidharma,

the third prince of the Hyangji Kingdom of India. 

To get rid of a large dead and rotting snake on the side of the 

road, he abandons his body for a moment, enters the snake's 

body, and falls into the sea.

While he was leaving, an ugly looking person who was practicing

Shinseondo abandoned his own body and took the body of the

Great Master, thinking it was an abandoned body.

 

It is said that the Great Master was unable to find his own body

and was forced to take that ugly person's body.

 

추한 모습의 달마도가 오히려 친근하게 느껴지니 중생을 위하여

자기 몸을 양보한 자비심이 빛을 발 함은 아닐지...

 

얼짱, 몸짱만이 부각되는 이 시대에 맘짱(아름다운 마음을 가진 사람)

이 많이 생겼으면 하는 바램이다.

The ugly-looking Bodhidharma feels rather friendly, so perhaps

the compassion that gives up one's body for the sake of living beings

shines through...

In this era where only good looks and good bodies are highlighted, 

I hope that there will be more mom-jjang (people with beautiful hearts).
