복을 찾아 삼 만 리(A journey to find happiness)

복 많은 행복한 청년

 

다음은 복을 찾아 서역국으로 여행을 떠나는 노총각 이야기이다.

 

옛날 어느 곳에 노총각이 살고 있었다.

나이가 30이 되도록 장가도 못 가고 할 일 없이 집구석에서 뒹굴던 총각.

새해가 밝았는데 멍하니 천장을 바라보다 "난 왜 이다지도 복이 없어

이렇게 세월만 보내는지 한심하구나." 하면서 푸념을 하고 있는데 창밖

에서 장기를 두던  노인네 한 분이 이 소리를 듣고 한마디를 하였다.

 

"야 이놈아, 서천서역국에 가서 석가세존을 만나 복을 달라고 빌어보게나.

 삼십 총각이 넘어가도록 장가도 못 가고 있으니" 하며 혀를 찼다.

 

그 소리에 밖으로 나온 총각이 "영감님!  그럼 서천서역국이 어디예요?

어디로 가야 복을 받을 수 있냐고요?"

 

"아 서천서역국  어디냐고? 서쪽으로만 가면 되지."

"정말입니까? 서쪽으로만 가면 된다고요?" 하면서 길을 나섰다.

 

무작정 서쪽으로 가다가다 보니 날은 저물고 다리도 아픈데 마침 눈앞에

큰 기와집이 나타났다.

 

반가운 마음에 한걸음에 달려가서 "쥔 양반 계십니까?" 하며 문을 두두

리자 문이 열리며 어떤 하인이 하나 나와 "왜 그러세요?" 하고 묻는다.

 

"내 길을 가다가 시방 날이 저물어서 어디 뭐 오갈 데도 없고 이 댁에서

하루저녁 신세 좀 지고 지구 가려고 그런다" 하니

 

"가만히 계세유. 어르신께 여쭈어 보겠습니다" 하더니 잠시 후

"들어오시라"해라 하는 목소리와 함께 한여인이 모습을 드러냈다.

 

집안에 들어서서 집주인과 이런 얘기 저런 얘기를 나누는 중 여주인이

묻는다.

 

" 누구시길래 어디를 가시다 이렇게 날이 저물었는지요?".

"내가 삼십 노총각으로 장가도 못 가구 가산이 어려워서 이렇게 복을

받으러 서천서역국으로 길을 가는 길이었습니다."

 

가만히 이 이야기를 듣던 이 여자가 "나도 돈은 많은데 남편복이 없어

복을 받고 싶은데 나도 부탁하나 합시다." "석가여래를 만나면 돈은

많은데 왜 남자복이 없는지 물어나 봐 주시오"

 

다음날 다시 길을 떠난 총각이 한참 길을 가다 보니 눈앞에 바다가 나타났다.

 

"이 바다를 어떻게 해야 건너가나?" 하면서 서성이고 있는데 웬 사람 하나가

나타나 "당신은 무슨 일로 바다 앞에서 서성거리고 있냐"라고 물으니 

 

"삼십 총각으로 장가도 못 가구 돈도 없고 하도 가난하여 서역국에 가서 복을

받으러 가는 길인데 바다가 막혀서 갈 수가 없어서 이렇게 왔다 갔다 하는 거요"

 

"그러면 바다는 내가 건너줄 테니까 나도 한번 부탁 좀 하자"며 

"내가 시방 용이 돼서 올라갈라고 다 준비가 돼 있는데, 올라가지를 못하니

이게 어떻게 된 조화인지 부처님께 물어봐 달라"라고 요청하였다.

 

그렇게 해 주겠다고 대답하니 그 사람이 용으로 모습을 바꾸며 그 등에 올라

타게 하고선 넓은 바다를 순싯간에 건너서 건너편에 내려 주었다.

 

길을 계속하여 가다 보니 하얀 백발노인네들이 서너 명이 앉아서 바둑을 두고

있었다. 그 노인네들에게 서역국 가는 길을 물으니

 

"너는 뭣한 사람인데 서역국을 찾느냐?" 

"서천서역국 그 석가세존 계시는 데 가서 복을 받으려고 이렇게 왔습니다."

 

"저기 앞에 저 궁궐같이 큰 집이 보이는가? 그곳에 부처님이 계실 거다."

"그런데 우리도 부탁할 게 있다." 하면서 "우리가 화분에 나무를 심어놨는데

이게 꽃이 피면 천상으로 올라가라고 부처님께서 말씀하셨는데, 백 년을 가도

꽃이 안 피니 이거 어떡하면 좋으냐? 그러니 네가 돌아오는 길에 물어봐다오"

 

알겠다고 대답하고 궁궐에 들어가니까 큰 부처님이 중앙에 자리 잡고 인자한

미소를 띠고 계셨다. 한걸음에 달려가 부처님 전에 엎드려 절을 하며 복을

달라며 기원하였다.

 

"어, 집에 가면 복을 줄 테니 그냥 가라." 

"아니 아무것도 안 주고서 어떻게 그냥 가라고 하십니까?" 

"그냥 가면 다 된다. 너 그런데 오다가 부탁받은 거 있지 않았냐?"

"예 있습니다."

 

먼저 과부 얘기를 하니까 

"그 과부는 돈이 너무 많아. 돈이 많은데 돈 없는 놈을 만나니까 죽을 수밖에

더 있냐? 그러니까 백번을 시집가도 소용이 없어. 저 돈 많은 사람을 만나라

고 일러라."

 

다음엔 용 얘기를 했더니

"그놈은 욕심이 너무 많아. 여의주를 하나만 가져야 되는데 두 개를 가져서

상제님께서 못 올라오시게 해. 그러니 여의주를 하나 내놓으라고 해라 그러면

올라갈 수 있다고"

 

마지막으로 신선들이 나무를 가꾸고 있는데 꽃이 피지 않아 백 년이 되도록 천상

으로 올라가지 못한다고 아뢰니 

 

"그런 미련한 놈들. 금극목이라 나무에게는 흙을 담아놔야 꽃이 피는 거지.

어떻게 화분에 금을 담아, 금싸라기를 담아 놨으니 꽃이 필 이유가 뭐 있느냐."

"그러니깐 금을 쏟아 버리고 흙을 채워서 나무를 키우도록 해라"

"그렇게 하면 너는 잘 될 테니까 그냥 가라"

 

감사의 인사를 하고 돌아오는 길에 신선들을 만나서 부처님의 말씀을 전했다.

 

"금극목이라고 하시면서 그 금싸라기에다가 나무를 묻어놔서 꼿이 못 핀다고

하시던데요." 

"허허 이제 알았다. 그 정말 이치가 그런 걸 몰랐다니." "이거 네나 다 가지고

가라"며 금싸라기를 모두 다 노총각에게 주었다.

 

길을 계속하여 가다가 용을 다시 만나서 나를 다시 태워주면 알려주겠다고

말하여 바다를 다시 건너왔다.

 

"뭐라고 말씀하시던가요?"

"네가 욕심이 너무 많아서 안 된다고 하더라."

"뭐가 욕심이 많다는 건지?"

 

"여의주 하나 얻기도 힘든데 두 개씩이나 가졌으니 용이 올라갈 수 있느냐고

히시다라"하니

"그럼 총각이나 하나 가지고 가라"라고 하여 그 노총각은 여의주까지 얻게 되었다.

 

마지막으로 과부한테 들려서 부처님의 얘기를 전했다.

"뭐이라고 하더냐"

"과부댁은 돈이 하도 많이 타고났는데 부자를 얻어야 같이 살지, 아주 어려운

놈을 얻으니까 그놈이 부자 될 그릇이 못돼. 그래 죽고 죽고 백 명을 얻어도 소용

없다고 하시더라" 

 

"그럼 총각은 복을 받아 왔냐"라고 물으니

"난 금싸라기 한 말에 여의주 하나 얻어가지고 왔다." 하니

"그러면 나하고 천생연분일세. 나랑 살자"

 

The following is the story of an old bachelor who travels to the West in search of fortune.

Once upon a time, in a certain place, there lived an old bachelor.

Even though he had turned 30, he was unable to get married and spent his days

idling around at home.

 

As the New Year dawned, he stared blankly at the ceiling and sighed,

"Why am I so unlucky, wasting my years away like this?"

 

Just then, an elderly man playing janggi (Korean chess) outside the window

overheard him and commented,

"Hey, you! Go to Seocheon Seoyeokguk and ask Buddha Shakyamuni for blessings.

You're already past thirty and still unmarried!"

 

Hearing this, the bachelor stepped outside and asked,

"Sir, where is Seocheon Seoyeokguk? How do I get there to receive my blessings?"

The old man replied, "Where? Just keep heading west."

 

"Really? I just have to go west?" he asked, and without hesitation,

he set off on his journey.

 

As he walked westward, night fell, and his legs grew tired. Just then, he spotted

a large house with a tiled roof in the distance.

 

Relieved, he ran toward it and knocked on the door, calling out, "Is anyone home?"

A servant answered and asked, "What brings you here?"

 

"I'm traveling, but night has fallen, and I have nowhere to stay.

Could I spend the night here?"

 

The servant replied, "Please wait a moment. I will ask the mistress of the house."

A short while later, a woman appeared and said, "Come in."

 

As he entered and conversed with the hostess, she asked,

"Who are you, and where are you headed that you've been caught by nightfall?"

 

"I'm a 30-year-old bachelor who has been unable to marry due to my misfortune.

I'm on my way to Seocheon Seoyeokguk to seek blessings."

 

After listening to his story, the woman said, "I, too, have wealth but no luck in marriage.

Please do me a favor.

When you meet Buddha, ask why, despite my riches, I have no luck with men."

 

The next morning, the bachelor resumed his journey. After some time, he arrived at t

he seashore.

 

"How am I supposed to cross this sea?" he wondered, pacing back and forth.

Just then, a man appeared and asked, "Why are you lingering here by the sea?"

 

The bachelor replied, "I'm a 30-year-old bachelor, unmarried and poor,

traveling to Seocheon Seoyeokguk for blessings, but the sea is blocking my way."

 

The man said, "I can help you cross, but I have a favor to ask in return.

I am supposed to ascend as a dragon, but something is preventing me.

Could you ask Buddha why I cannot ascend?"

 

The bachelor agreed, and suddenly, the man transformed into a dragon.

He let the bachelor climb onto his back and swiftly carried him across the vast sea.

 

Continuing his journey, the bachelor came upon three or four elderly men playing

baduk.

He asked them for directions to Seocheon Seoyeokguk, and one of them replied,

"Why are you looking for Seocheon Seoyeokguk?"

"I'm going to see Buddha to receive blessings."

 

"Do you see that grand palace ahead? That is where Buddha resides."

"However, we also have a favor to ask," they added.

 

"We planted a tree in a pot, and Buddha told us that when it blooms,

we can ascend to heaven. But even after a hundred years, it hasn't bloomed.

Can you ask why?"

 

The bachelor agreed and entered the palace. Inside, a great Buddha sat in

the center, smiling kindly.

He rushed forward, knelt, and prayed for blessings.

Buddha said, "Return home, and you shall receive blessings."

 

The bachelor protested, "How can I just leave without receiving anything?"

Buddha replied, "Just go, and everything will be fine.

 

But haven't you received some requests along your way?"

"Yes, I have," he answered.

 

First, he mentioned the widow’s situation.

Buddha explained, "She has too much wealth. Since she keeps marrying poor men,

they cannot handle it, and they die. Even if she marries a hundred times,

it will be the same. Tell her to marry a wealthy man instead."

 

Next, the bachelor asked about the dragon.

Buddha said, "That dragon is too greedy. He should only have one dragon pearl

(yeouiju), but he possesses two. The Supreme Deity is preventing him from ascending

because of this.

Tell him to give up one pearl, and he will be able to rise."

 

Lastly, the bachelor asked about the tree that would not bloom.

Buddha laughed, "How foolish! The tree is a wood element, but they planted it in a pot

filled with gold. How can a tree bloom in gold? Tell them to replace the gold with soil."

"Now, return home, and your fate will change," Buddha concluded.

 

The bachelor thanked him and left. On his way back, he met the old men again and

relayed Buddha’s words.

"Haha! Now we understand! We never thought of that!"

As gratitude, they gave the bachelor all their gold.

 

Continuing his journey, he found the dragon once more. He told the dragon he would

reveal Buddha’s words only if the dragon carried him across the sea.

 

After crossing, the dragon asked, "What did Buddha say?"

"He said you're too greedy. You have two dragon pearls when you should only have one.

That’s why you cannot ascend."

The dragon sighed and said, "Then take one pearl for yourself," handing over a dragon

pearl.

 

Finally, the bachelor returned to the widow’s house and relayed Buddha’s message.

"What did Buddha say?" she asked.

 

"He said that since you were born wealthy, you must marry a rich man.

If you keep marrying poor men, it will never work."

 

She then asked, "Did you receive any blessings?"

The bachelor replied, "I received a sack of gold and a dragon pearl."

 

The widow smiled and said, "Then we are a perfect match. Let’s be together."

And so, the bachelor, who had left home with nothing, returned with riches and found love,

living happily ever after.
