정이란 무엇인가? What is the word "Jeong" used in Korea?

한국인에게는 너무나 익숙하나 외국인에게는 다소 어색한 단어 '정' 이란 무엇일까?

한국인의 감정으로 볼 때는 말로는 표현할 수 없지만 오직 가슴으로 느낄 수 있는 어떤 따스한 그 무엇이다.

한국가요 "정이란 무엇일까?" 는 사람들의 가슴을 어루만지는 다소 투박하지만 깊은 한국인의 정서를 표현

한 곡이다.

 

What is "Jeong," a word familiar to Koreans or somewhat unfamiliar to foreigners? I wonder if Korean

sentiment is something warm that cannot be expressed in words and can only be felt with the heart.

I thought that "What is affection?" a popular Korean song that touches people's hearts, was a song that

could express the clunky but sincere Korean affection.

 

프랑스 작가이고 2008년 노벨 문학상을 수상한 '르 클레지오'는 한국의 '정'이라는 단어를 가장 좋아한다

면서 "정이란 개념이 참 오묘하며 독특하고, 영어, 불어 사전을 뒤져봐도 번역할 길이 없다"라며 '정'은 한국

사회 곳곳에 뿌리내린 독특한 한국 고유의 문화이기 때문에 외국인들에게 한국 사회와 한국 사람을 이해

시키려면 가장 필수적이면서 설명할 수 없는 힘든 그 무엇이라고 했다.

word "Jeong" the most

"The concept of politics is very mysterious and unique, and even if you look through English and

French dictionaries, there is no way to translate it," he said, adding that "Jeong" is the most essential

and inexplicable thing to make foreigners understand Korean society and Koreans because it is a

unique Korean culture rooted in various parts of Korean society.

 

아무튼 필설로 단박에 이해시킬 수 없지만 한국인을 가장 잘 나타내는 일종의 사랑의 코드(부호) 같은 것이

아닐까한다.

represents Koreans.

며칠 전 구민초(救民草) 에서 블로그 마케팅을 지도하시는 선생님의 글에서 반려견 '해피'가 떨어져서

골절이 되는 바람에 마음고생을 하신다는 글을 읽고 정이 많으면 많을수록 가슴의 통증이 비례한다는

사실에 공감이 되었다.

'이조년'의 이 시조는 고등학교 국어 교과서에 실렸던 것으로 정 많은 한국인의 정서를 숨죽여 은근하게 표현한

사랑의 마음을 노래한 대표적인 시조라 할 것이다.

 

​This sijo of "Lee Jo-nyeon" was published in a high school Korean language textbook,

and it is a representative sijo that sang the heart of love, which subtly expressed the emotions of many Koreans.

 

'세상이 잠들은 고요한 깊은 밤중에

하얀 배꽃 나무 위에 떠 있는 달빛 그림자

한 가닥 일어나는 그리운 마음을 아무 생각 없이 울어대는 두견새가 알겠냐마는

다정한 그 마음이 나를 잠들지 못하게 하는구나'

 

 "In the calm deep night when the world fell asleep
 The moonlight shadow floating on the white pear blossom tree
 My longing for you is getting deeper
 The heartless cuckoo sings without knowing my heart
 That kind heart keeps me from falling asleep."

 

몇 번을 고쳐 음미해 보아도 이 시조처럼 은근하고 차분하게 사랑을 노래한 글은 나 같은 필부는 몇 년을 공부

하더라도 흉내도 못 낼 것이다.

​한편 조선선조때 함경도 기생이던 홍랑의 시조도 음미할 만하다.

밤비에 새잎 나거든 나인가도 여기소서' (Bam bi e sae nib na geo deun na in gado yeogisoseo)

 

위의 시조는 당시에 8대 문장가인 고죽 '최경창'에게 보낸 한국 문학사에서 가장 아름다운 연시(戀詩)로 평가받는

시로 헤어지는 님을 사모하는 애절한 심정을 노래하고 있다.

홍원 현감이 베풀어준 연회에서 술잔이 돌아가며 흥취가 돌자 홍랑이 시조 한수를 읊었는데 그 시조가 바로

'최경창'이 지은 시구였으며 이에 놀란 '최경창'이 넌지시 누구의 시조를 좋아하느냐 묻자 '고죽'의 시를 좋아한다고

답하자 바로 자신이 '고죽'임을 밝히면서 이들의 사랑은 시작 되었고 2년간의 연애 끝에 이별의 순간이 다가오자

헤어지던 길가에 피어있던 산버들을 한 묶음을 꺾어 그에게 전하면서 애달픈 어조로 읊조린 시라고 하니 홍랑의

정은 가이 하늘보다 높고 바다보다도 깊다고 할 것이다.

타계하신 법정 스님도 선물 받은 난초로 인하여 외출을 하더라도 난초 걱정 때문에 절로 되돌아가길 수차례 하시면서

이 모든 것이 집착에서 비롯되었다는 것을 깨닫고 난초를 다른 스님 에게 주었다는 일화가 있듯이 모든 것이 정 때문

에 일어난 일이 아닌가 한다.

 

​There is an anecdote about the late Buddhist monk Beopjeong, who received an orchid as a gift.

Even when he went out, he would return to the temple several times, worried about the orchid. Realizing that all

of this stemmed from attachment, he gave the orchid to another monk. This story illustrates how everything arises

from affection.

 

정은 말하지 않아도, 눈빛만 보아도 알 수 있는 한국인의 고유한 정서이며 따스한 마음이며 정에 대한 대상은 사람에게

국한되지 않고 강아지나 고양이는 물론 심지어 국화 한 송이, 난초 등에게도 해당되는 오묘한 그 어떤 것이다.

 

Jeong, a unique sentiment of Koreans, is a warm, unspoken feeling that can be understood through a mere glance. The objects of jeong are not limited to people but extend to dogs, cats, and even a single chrysanthemum or orchid.

 

그러나 정 때문에 일어나는 폐해도 있다. 사회나 직장에서 능력도 없고 남을 음해하며 남에게 피해를 주는 질 나쁜

사람도 고향 사람이란 이유로, 같은 학교 선후배라는 이유로 자기가 정을 준 사람은 아껴주고 보듬어주는 바람에

사회와 국가를 병들게 하는 일이 비일비재하지 않는가?

 

However, jeong also causes harm. In society and the workplace, individuals without competence who harm others are often favored and protected simply because they share the same hometown or attended the same school.

This favoritism can harm society and the nation.

 

정을 쏟고 정에 울며 살아온 우리 민족!

자기 자식이 잘못했더라도 그 몹쓸 정 때문에 회초리도 제대로 대지 못하는 선생님을 죽음에 몰아세우는 그런 빛바랜

정 타령에서 이제는 벗어나야 할 것이며 가슴이 아플지라도 우리 자손의 영적 성숙을 위해서 무조건적인 정의 남발은

자제해야 되지 않을까 생각한다.

 

We are a people who have lived with and wept over jeong! Even when one's own child has done wrong, the misplaced jeong prevents proper discipline, driving teachers to despair. It is time to move away from this faded notion of jeong.

Even if it pains us, we should refrain from indiscriminately showering jeong for the spiritual maturity of our descendants.
